Strauss is far from useless. Your about to find out over the next month or so mate
He was in charge for the only series England have won against sides other than New Zealand and West Indies since 2005 - Pakistan in 2006. Then England decided to pander to Flintoff's demands and we lost that series 0-2.
To put Strauss as a captain into perspective, Vaughan NEVER beat any of Pakistan, Sri Lanka or India in a Test as captain. Strauss may have lost the series in West Indies while Vaughan mopped them up regularly, but it's hardly Strauss' fault the pitches were flat as pancakes and that England somehow contrived to capitulate for 50. England capitulated for 81 under Vaughan, he was lucky and it didn't cost him that Test although England still lost the series. It isn't the first time England have inexplicably capitulated
Strauss (Captain)
vs West Indies : P7 W2 D4 L1
vs Pakistan : P4 W3 D1 L0
Overall : P11 W5 D5 L1 (Won 45.45%)
*I think the last verdict of the ICC was that the abandoned Test where Pakistan threw their toys out of their prams was an England win, but it may soon change back again
Vaughan (Captain)
vs Australia : P5 W2 D2 L1
vs South Africa : P12 W4 D3 L5
vs PAK/IND/SRI : P11 W0 D7 L4
vs New Zealand : P8 W6 D1 L1
vs West Indies : P11 W10 D1 L0
vs Bangladesh : P4 W4 D0 L0
vs AUS/SAF/PAK/IND/SRI : P28 W6 D12 L10 (Won 21.43%)
vs NZE/WIN/BAN : P23 W20 D2 L1 (Won 86.96%)
Overall : P51 W26 D14 L11 (Won 50.98%)
20 of Vaughan's 26 wins as captain (76.92%) were against the weaker Test nations. Don't be fooled by his overall record, or England losing to West Indies in West Indies. Granted he produced two of England's best series wins in a long time, but then so did Hussain in Pakistan and Sri Lanka and he doesn't get half the credit Vaughan does despite winning without Flintoff - all because he didn't get to thrash Bangladesh or West Indies regularly to boost his record.
Hussain (Captain)
vs AUS/SAF/PAK/IND/SRI : P31 W10 D10 L11 (Won 32.26%)
vs NZE/WIN/BAN/ZIM : P14 W7 D3 L4 (Won 50.00%)
Overall : P45 W17 D13 L15 (Won 37.78%)
Hussain's record against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India was pretty much the opposite of Vaughan's - P17 W7 D7 L3. He suffered a bit at the hands of a then handy New Zealand side though, was he in charge when England couldn't get out the Kiwi tail in New Zealand and drew the series? West Indies had the likes of Walsh, Ambrose and Lara when England beat them for the first time in a long time under Hussain. BUT the main comparison is between Strauss and Vaughan as they are closer eras and opponents to compare. That said, the Pakistan side that lost so easily in 2006 was relatively poor.
