I still think Liverpool will be stuck in 18 even if United have to wait until 2039 for another title!
Nice and round numbers too, Fergie's last ever game will be his 1,500th in charge of United.
Not many managers have a statue and a stand dedicated to them while they are still in charge.

Yep. The phrase 'Living Legend' is thrown around a bit I think but in Sir Alex' case it's completely accurate.
As far as the new man goes, the only man in the whole world who could walk into Old Trafford with the confidence to take up the baton is Mourinho, but my money is on Moyes.

isn't this really exactly why he should get it? everyone is talking about how managing after fergie is going to be a poisoned chalice, but Jose's got the ego to come in drink it up then wash it out and put it back for someone else. might win a few things too and he's often left each club with a couple of world class players he's identified. the fans moan about the job he's done at madrid, look at the players he's leaving them with!
the only reason I'd give it to someone else is if the board are positive klopp, conte or moyes does represent someone that will win for 10 years. tbh, I always said moyes, but mourinho being available at the right time is just too good to miss.
Or it could go as smooth as Bill Shankly to Bob Paisley...

I don't know - from what I've seen of Mourinho, the challenge to keep Utd at the top after such a successful predecessor might be too much to resist: our Jose loves a challenge! For me it all depends on how far negotiations are with Chelsea. Then again, Sir Bobby is strongly opposed to Mourinho being the new man. However, if nothing's been tied up with Chelsea beyond maybe a verbal agreement, I think we'll see Jose at Old Trafford next season and it would be amusing to have him as our manager...

yes, after I thought about it the one problem is, just last week, mourinho himself said "I want to be somewhere I am loved." it's unlikely the man u fans are going to love him very easily when they spend next year pining for their true love.

Mourinho has his heart set on Chelsea. He kept his house in London when he moved to Italy and bloody loves the place.
Something that may have made him more excited about returning to England was the mind battle with Fergie - Moyes vs Jose doesn't really have a ring to it, does it?

Nope, and neither would it be a close fight: Mourinho would win by TKO. Is that a factor in your mind - whoever comes in is going to have Jose's mind games to play with after all. Mancini.... the less said about his attempts at 'mind games', the better.

I am no Man U fan but I have a deep respect for what they have achieved over the past few decades and much of that is down to Sir Alex. Just look at the number of real, true home grown players he brought up. I still remember when Van the Man had signed for United only for him to break his leg soon after, but Alex kept faith in him for a whole year till he was ready to play again. Many of the players have spoken how they felt he was like father to them, getting the best from them. It wont be quite the same without his gnarled, chewing gum chewing, hand and arm waving dramatics from the sideline.
