Commonwealth Bank Series Fixtures Announced
Debate over abandoned tri-series continues and shock as Brisbane dumped from fixture list

200px-CBSeriesLogo.jpg

Cricket Australia have announced the fixtures for the upcoming Commonwealth Bank Series between England and Australia.

The governing body of Australian cricket surprised players and fans by revealing that New Zealand will not be participating and that the series would abandon it's traditional tri-series format.

"Playing the same team for five times consecutively allows the opposition to devise plans to become more competitive if they have lost. That is the beauty, as the series goes on there will be some crackers of matches," said James Sutherland, CA chief.

All but one of the five venues for the one day international series hosted an Ashes test match recently. The Gabba in Brisbane has not been awarded a match due to the crowd trouble that saw most of the first Ashes test played behind closed doors.

Schedule

TBC: 1st ODI at Hobart
TBC: 2nd ODI at Adelaide
TBC: 3rd ODI at Perth
TBC: 4th ODI at Melbourne
TBC: 5th ODI at Sydney

Rain sees 2nd ODI abandoned

71716.jpg

Weathermen predicted a season of torrenial rain across Australia and it affected the first cricket match of the playing year today as it washed out the 2nd ODI between Australia and England in Adelaide.

With play due to begin at 10:45, the players managed to get on the field and bowl only 1.3 overs before the rain began at 11:05.

Umpire inspections at 11:30, 12:00 and 12:30 were unsuccessful and at 1:10 the match was officially abandoned.

England lead the 5 match series 1-0 and there are now 3 matches to play.

HAYDEN CENTURY LEVELS SERIES

Australia beat England by 20 runs in the third one day international at the WACA in Perth to level the Commonwealth Bank series at 1-1.

Captain Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat first, aware that England did not have the bowlers to exploit the ground's traditionally bouncy wickets.

Ryan Sidebottom took the first wicket of the Australian innings by having Michael Hussey caught at slip by Kevin Pietersen for a cautious 28 from 36 balls.

England did their best to keep it tight, but they were unable to take wickets and the new batsman Ponting made a 156 run stand with opener Matthew Hayden.

Hayden put the English bowlers to the sword, finishing unbeaten on 126 from a watchful 149 balls.

Ponting was out for 85 off 99 balls, caught by Andrew Flintoff off the bowling of Paul Collingwood.

Shane Watson only lasted for 8 balls, dismissed for 4, caught Alastair Cook, bowled Collingwood.

Australia posted a daunting total of 267/3 from their 50 overs.

Matthew Hayden smashed 126 from 149 balls to put Australia on top

Matt Prior retained his position at the top of the order but let himself and the selectors down by being bowled by Glenn McGrath for just 8 off 6 balls.

Alastair Cook, who made 66, and Michael Vaughan, who made 49, steadied the ship against some agressive pace bowling from Nathan Bracken and Shane Watson.

The remaining batsmen all made starts but failed to capitalise: Kevin Pietersen (10), Paul Collingwood (5), Ian Bell (21), Andrew Flintoff (13), Owais Shah (12).

James Anderson was bowled by McGrath for 2 off 15 balls, but Ryan Sidebottom and Monty Panesar did a respectable job in regaining some of their country's dignity in defeat, Sidebottom ending 26 not out off 56 balls and Panesar 22 not out from 36 balls.

The 10th wicket partnership was worth 51 runs, the 2nd highest in the innings.

3rd ODI Result

Australia innings: 267/3 (Hayden 126 not out)
England innings: 247/9 (Cook 66)

Australia win by 20 runs and level the series 1-1

England captain Michael Vaughan hinted at changes for the 4th ODI in Melbourne.

"We were disappointed not to play any cricket in Adelaide, as we were very confident after winning in Hobart," he said.

"We let ourselves down today. Our bowlers did a reasonable job, Australia's batsmen were fantastic, but our batsmen should have applied themselves more. I feel changes in the team might breed new life."

The tropical storm that washed out the 2nd ODI at the Adelaide Oval has been forecast for Melbourne, the venue of the next match.

"We will do all we can to get some play." said the head groundsman at the MCG.

ENGLAND CRUSHED AS ONE DAY SERIES TURNS AROUND

Australia crushed England by 79 runs as the tourists became homesick in Melbourne.

Both sides were unchanged, and England's decision to bowl first was hit for six with Ponting's 71 and Hussey's 98.

Australia: 294-3

England lost 6 wickets in 2 overs.

England: 215

If i am right, Aussies lead 2-1 now which is a very good come back from the home team. And 6 wickets in 2 overs indicates that there is some team to give company to Windies in terms of " Collapse " :p

AUSTRALIA WIN COMMONWEALTH BANK SERIES

70957.jpg

Australian opening batsman Michael Hussey scored a magnificent 135 to give Australia an unassailable total in the 5th ODI vs England at Sydney

England's gameplan fell to pieces as Australia won the fifth one day international by 67 runs in Sydney to take the Commonwealth Bank series 3-1.

Captain Michael Vaughan won the toss and elected to bowl first, only to see his top bowlers James Anderson, Ryan Sidebottom, Monty Panesar and Andrew Flintoff toil as openers Michael Hussey and Matthew Hayden posted a partnership of 202 for the first wicket.

It was only broken by part timer Paul Collingwood as he caught Hayden for 96.

Ricky Ponting, who made 41, and Phil Jaques, who made just 1, were the two batsmen who were run out in calamity.

Collingwood took three more scalps - including Hussey for a stunning 135. Shane Watson and Adam Gilchrist, for a golden duck, were his other victims.

Australia made 305/6 off their 50 overs and set England a very improbable target.

Chris Read, who replaced Matt Prior in a tactical change, made just 27 before he was out, bowled by Stuart Clark.

Alastair Cook was the top scorer with only 46 - joined by Vaughan (29), Kevin Pietersen (34), Collingwood (37), Ian Bell (5), Flintoff (24) and Owais Shah (30).

It took 40.5 overs for Australian bowlers Clark (1 wicket), Glenn McGrath (3), Brett Lee (2), Jason Gillespie (2) and Watson (2) to dismiss England for 238.

Hussey was rewarded for his fantastic innings with the man of the match award, selected by the commentary team of Test Match Special.

Matthew Hayden was the man of the series for some awesome displays over the five matches.

Michael Vaughan said: "Our gameplan was to keep it tight and frustrate the Australians into losing wickets. They defied that by playing themselves in and really going for it. They took us to pieces and thoroughly deserve their victory."

"England in Australia" is now complete. I would like to thank everyone who commented during this time and gave me guidance for improvement.

A message from the captains:

"Thank you for supporting the England team on our tour to Australia. Without you, it would have been doubly difficult to have won the Ashes 2-1, in such excellent fashion. We were disappointed to have lost the Commonwealth Bank series but the way in which Owais Shah helped us chase more than 300 in the fist one day international will forever live in our memories. Thank you, once again, for all your support."

England captain MICHAEL VAUGHAN

"The Australian team appreciates all of the support that you gave us during our hosting of our rivals England this summer. We were disappointed to lose the Ashes but we did our best and we did it in the true Australian fashion. No one will forget how Matthew Hayden smashed us to victory in the fourth one day international, which put us into the lead and practically won us the Commonwealth Bank series. We hope you have enjoyed the tour as much as we have."

Australia captain RICKY PONTING
