Perth Win In Close Encounter
Teams:
It was the first match of the season and what better to start the season that a very close match. Perth were sent into bat and only made 239 from their 50 over?s. Clarke hit 51 opening the batting and Birt, back from injury scored 74 off 71 balls. Other than that though, everyone else failed. Agarkar, Bravo, Harris and Nayar shared the wickets. It seemed like a below par score on a pretty normal pitch but Chennai had trouble as they fell to 21/2, Dravid and Cook failing to get into double figures. Chopra scored 95 and Khan scored 49 but Khan was way too slow, his 49 coming off 72 balls. That left them just short in the end, finishing 235/6. McKay bowled really well, finishing with 3/38 from 10 over?s. Birt took man of the match though for his knock of 74 off 71 balls.

Chris Gayle Leads Kolkata to Victory
Teams:
Well it was another good match to start the season as Kolkata batted well to record a 7 wicket win over Bangalore with only 2.4 over's to spare as they chased down Bangalore's total of 281. Kolkata sent Bangalore into bat despite it being an excellent pitch to bat on and Singh and Uthappa got things going well, putting on an opening stand of 127, Singh scoring 77 and Uthappa scoring 74. Pietersen also put on a good innings of 69 and Oram scored a nice 22* at the end to get a total of 281/5 from their fifty over's. Mishra was pick of the bowlers taking 2/48 from 10 over's and taking the crucial wickets of Singh and Uthappa. Sharma also took 2/47 from his 10 over's. Gayle was the most expensive bowler, being hit for 1/35 from 3 over's.
Gayle and Butt put on a 100 run opening partnership and Butt was unlucky not to get fifty, bowled out for 49 by Sunil Joshi who took 5 wickets in the pre-season friendly. Gayle was finally dismissed for 83 off 73 balls and that was probably what won Kolkata the match. Badrinath made 41 before going in similar fashion to Butt, bowled by Joshi. Raina and Jaffer took Kolkata home with a 91 run partnership. Raina finished 62* off 63 while Jaffer scored 40* at exactly a run a ball as Kolkata recorded a 7 wicket win with 16 balls to spare. Joshi (2/44), Oram (0/46) and Malinga (1/49) were the only good bowlers for Bangalore. Gayle got Man Of The Match for his good knock of 83 at over a run a ball including 3 sixes.

Delhi Dominates in Big Win Over Hyderabad
Teams:
Hyderabad batted poorly on an excellent pitch after being sent into bat. Apart from Jayasuriya who scored 71 and Afridi who scored 68, the rest of the batsman didn't bat well as Hyderabad was bowled out for 231. Kulasekara bowled really well for his 4 wickets, including the wickets of Iqbal, Vijay and Dhoni. Khan took 2 wickets and Morkel, Ojha, Manhas and Tendulkar took 1 wicket each. Sharma only managed 3 runs and Sarwan was dismissed for a duck but Tendulkar and Chanderpaul put on a partnership of 171, Chanderpaul out for 90 off 99 and Tendulkar run out for 92 off 109. It was all over by then as Dhawan and Manhas scored the last 35 runs as Delhi won by 6 wickets with nearly 10 over's to spare. Pathan was hit around the park, and despite taking 2 wickets, he conceded 73 runs from 9.4 over's. A good result for Delhi to start their campaign.

I didn't know who to choose as MOTM for that match. It was Tendulkar at first but I decided to give it to Chanderpaul as he had a better strike rate and only scored 2 less runs than Tendulkar. I was also thinking Kulasekara who took 4 wickets on an excellent pitch.

Katich Scores Century as Sydney Defeats Adelaide
Teams:
Sydney Scorpions were probably the strongest side of the competition with all players in the starting XI having played International cricket. Sydney won the toss and elected to bat on a pretty good pitch. Warner and Katich got Sydney off to a good start, Warner being dismissed by Murilitharan for 46. Ponting also made 51 before being dismissed by the other International bowler, Dale Steyn. Trott and Katich took the Scorpions through to the end of the innings, finishing 269/2 from their 50 over's, Trott finishing 38* but it was Katich's day as he scored a century in his first game of the regular season as he finished 113*. No bowlers were really expensive, most bowlers going at around 5 an over. The Scorpion's bowlers didn't let the team down as they bowled Adelaide out for 239 in 49.3 over's. Akmal top scored with 80 and Bandy put on a healthy 38 but there was not much else. Clark and Sidebottom were the best bowlers, Clark taking 4/35 from 8.3 over's and Sidebottom taking 3/30 from 10 over's. McDonald also chipped in with 2 wickets and Siddle also took a wicket. In the end, Sydney won by 30 runs, man of the match going to Simon Katich for his unbeaten century.

Brisbane Come Out Winners in Close Encounter
Teams:
Brisbane won the toss and had a bat on a poor pitch. All batsman got starts, Collingwood and McLaren top scoring, both with 41*. Hopes and Vettori shared the wickets and Hauritz didn't get any wickets but only conceded 42 runs from his 10 over's. Brisbane finished with 234/4 from their 50 over's. It was a pretty good score on a poor pitch. Hobart got off to a perfect start and the first 20 overs brought 106 runs for the loss of only 1 wicket and the RRR was getting lower at 4.3 an over. Jayawardene was the only wicket to fall in the first 20 over's, as he scored 28. Voges made 21 before getting out. Hussey was dismissed by Doherty in the same over for 62 off 65 balls and when Misbah ul-haq was out for 3, the game turned back in favour of Brisbane. Henriques made a handy 31 at nearly a run a ball but Jewell was going along very slowly. They ended up short, losing by 12 runs. Jewell was very slow scoring 42* off 89 deliveries. Doherty was excellent with the ball taking 3/27 from his 10 over's which gave him MOTM. Another close game in the first round.

Canberra Win in Yet Another Close Match
Teams:
Canberra opened their campaign with a narrow victory. Canberra won the toss and had a bat on a pretty good looking pitch. Smith only made 21 but Watson and North both made half centuries and Dilshan and Bravo also scored in the 40's, Bravo finishing on 49*. Harbhajan Singh bowled well, taking the wickets of Smith and Watson in his spell of 10 over's, 2/46. Ntini struck early for Canberra, McCullum trapped in front for 3. Gambhir, Ganguly and Gibbs all scored fifties to put Jaipur back in the game. Despite a quickfire 27 off 21 from Wilkin Mota, Jaipur only managed 264/6 from their 50 over's falling 6 runs short. Watson was named man of the match for his half century and 1/38 from 8 over's.
