Australia seal 4 wicket win

Australia completed their 3rd test victory in as many matches when they defeated New Zealand by 4 wickets at the Westpac Trust Stadium in Wellington today. Lead by an inspirational 107 from captain Ricky Ponting, Australia appeared to be cruising before Michael Clarke was dismissed for 64 with the score 4/191. However thanks to a saving knock from Adam Gilchirst (18*) and Shane Warne (9*), Australia was able to limp home to their third consecutive victory with the score 6/231.

It took the visitors 34 minutes to compile the 10 runs necessary for victory on day 4 of the match, thanks largely to shane warne and 3 edges that produced a total of 7 runs off Daniel Vettori, who produced excellent figures of 3/34 (12.4) to go with his 3/26 (8.3) from his Australias 1st innings.

Post Match Analysis - Richie Benaud

Benaud - Welcome back here to the action where we have seen another gutsy peformance by both teams and a very entertaining match of test match cricket. With me i have Mark Taylor and Martin Crowe, just quickly guys, what a match of cricket?

Taylor - A great display of both batting by Ponting and Clarke but also great bowling from Vettori that enabled the home side to really get back into the contest. I think Australia gave New Zealand a slight window of opportunity and New Zealand almost took it to full advantage.

Crowe - Well this is typical of the rivarly existing between these two teams. Its not faught as hard as say an india pakistan match but they really do go at it.

Benaud - Very much so, i must say i was very impressed with dan vettori. Well we join Ian Healy now with the post match presentation.

Healy - Thanks very much Richie, yes i have with me both Stephen Flemming and Ricky Ponting. Firstly id like to chat with Stephen Flemming, now Stephen you can take alot out of this match, yes?

Flemming - Yes Ian, im a little dissapointed in our bowling performance around lunch time yesterday. We had a really good chance to win this game but we let it slip, full credit to both Ponting and Clarke, they batted very well. We will take alot of confidence out of this game, our overall peformance is great, we just need to finish them off.

Healy - Well best of luck with future games Stephen, now to the winning captain and also man of the match, Ricky Ponting. Punter you would have to be over the moon with both your teams and your own personal play in this match.

Ponting - Well probably not as happy with the teams performance here Heals. Our batting is really struggling at the moment. There are only 4 or 5 guys standing up every game. Our bowling is lead by Pigeon (McGrath), Dizzy (Gillespie) and Warney, while the only two to really bat well is myself and Clarkey. This really has to be looked at. But other than that im pretty happy.

Healy - Perhaps some changes against india?

Ponting - India will be a lot tougher in India so i would say a few things will be changed.

Healy - We await this with interest. Best of luck Ricky for your next match against Zimbabwe in the one dayer and then India in the test match. Thanks for watching this fox sports production.

Great game of cricket. Well done Australia.

I would have given the man of the match to Michael Clarke because had it not been for his 76 in the first innings, Australia would have struggled to cross even 150. He then also played a crucial 64 alonside Punter. But yeah Punter's century in the 2nd innings was match winning hundred.

i was thinking about that very closely. the thing was clarkes 2nd dig was very scratchy but the leadership and the aggression ponting showed really sealed the win. valid point though. both were very good candidates.

Good win for the Australian side..

Fleming looks so sad in there after that defeat!! Good presentation Mark!!

U r right on top buddy, all the best

Yes champ ive been rather lucky with both the draw and a few of the games. i think the real challenge will be against india after i finish the zimbabwe match on now. i think the india game will be a cracker. hopefully everybody will get into it. and the south african game will be very tight, as will the english game

Aus, SAF and Eng have started off well!!

yes i think these 3 will probably be the teams to beat. maybe throw india into that equation later. west indies have been hot and cold but they just cant take wickets. the others look like they will play for the bottom of the table.

just as an aside. in the A team comp running along with it james hopes, brad haddin, shaun tait and jimmy maher have all played very well. some of them may recieve a call up. maybe at the expense of lehman

R u playing them both at home or in their own den

playing india in the heart of kolkata. i will download some indian crowd files soon so i can enjoy a really heated contest. maybe mcgill and warne will spin off together on a dust bowl. that would be great viewing i feel. this is the match i had picked out early on to be the big challenge
