Massive Partnership puts Australia in commanding position - End of Aus 1st Innings

A massive 336 run 4th wicket partnership between opening batsman Justin Langer and young sensation Michael Clarke has put Australia in a commanding position late on day 2 of the test match against India in Kolkata. Ricky Ponting finally pulled the pin on a frustrating 1st innings for Australia, as the visitors struggled in the hot and dry Indian conditions on a wicket that gave great assistance to the spin bowlers. Ponting declared Australia's innings closed with the score on 3/503 after 147 overs and almost 13 hours of play, 5.00 indian time, allowing the Australian bowling lineup of McGrath, Gillespie, Warne and MacGill an hour to bowl at the Indian top order.

The stars of the Australian innings were undoubtably opener Langer, who amassed the highest score of any batsman so far in the international season with a gritty 209* from a tiring 421 balls (a strike rate of just under 50) and Australias newest cricketing prodigy Michael Clarke, who scored a solid yet attacking 170* from 276 balls (strike rate of 61). The pair took australia from a potentially dangerous position of 3/167 after Matthew Hayden (15) and Damian Martyn (0) continued their poor form in the test match arena.

Many compared the innings to the fighting knocks of Rahul Dravid (180) and V.V.S Laxman (281) for India in their partnership of 376 against Australia in the second test at Calcutta in March 2001. The innings, particuarly of Langers was also compared to that of the fighting Dean Jones innings of 210 in the famous tied test in Madras in 1986-87.

If there was one negative to come out of the Australian innings it was that the bowling from the home side was overly negative. It was Harbajan Singh who claimed figures of 2/113.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting seemed positive when asked about his thoughts on winning the match.

Idealy we would have liked to have been in this position probably 3 or 4 hours ago. But it wasnt to be, we just have to consentrate on our job with the ball now. If we can get on top of the batsman early we could look to dismiss them early and send them back in again but at the moment we just want to get out there and get on top. Our bowlers have been sitting around for two days now while their batsman have been out in the very hot field for almost the entire two days... that has to improve our chances, obviously we will look for a result from this match.

Indian captain Surav Ganguly appeared less positive when asked about the chances of a result.

Well we have two excellent batting teams in this match, it was always going to be a tough ask to take 40 wickets out there in 5 days. Now we are looking at taking 30 wickets in just over 3 days. It will be a very tough ask. If we can survive till the end of the day without loosing a wicket and then progress early tomorrow then i dont think we will lose this test.

Indias Response - Stumps Day 2

The first 11 hours of the test match spent in the field by Surav Ganguly and his Indian team appeared to take effect late on day 2, as the home side suffered a top order collapse at the hands of a fresh Australian bowling attack at Kolkata today.

Trailing by an enormous 3/503 with an hour left to play, India played attacking cricket but it proved unsuccessful as the home side slumped to 3/37 from the remaining 13 overs of the days play. India lost the key wickets of Virender Sehwag (14) and Sachin Tendulkar (6) along with opening batsman Aakash Chopra (0) thanks to some great bowling from Glenn McGrath, who picked up Sehwag and Chopra to finish the day with 2/16, and Stuart MacGill, who had the always dangerous Tendulkar stumped by Ganguly to finish the day on 1/2 from 2 overs.

When asked about his teams performances over the first 2 days, Ricky Ponting seemed very content and optomistic regarding the next 3 days of play.

Well the mood in the dressing room is quite relaxed now. There were a few of the lads who probably were a little nervous at the end of our innings, i mean 503 in almost 2 days isnt normally our style. But now that we are slightly on top here i think we should be in a great position to tighten the screws tomorrow and hopefully take a few wickets. However the captain is still there, and Dravid and Laxman aswell and we know what they can do to us so we will just have to get our heads right and do our job tomorrow.

Aus right on top here, they lost 3 wkts for 500 runs, India have lost them for a meagre 30 odd:help :upray :noway

only thanks two the great knocks of Langer and Clarke. i think the long time in the field may have got to the top order because the bowlers look good. one dissapointment though is that the batsman try and play at everything. using boss's V4. they dont seem to let alot go.

McGrath runs hot as India falls off the pace

Fighting knocks from Indian test heroes Rahul Dravid and V.V.S Laxman were unable to lift India from a difficult position at tea on day 3 of the test match vs Australia in Kolkata today. Resuming play with the score at 3/37, the always reliable Dravid combined with captain Surav Ganguly to steady the innings and suceeded in compiling a 46 run partnership before Ganguly was dismissed via some great bowling from Stuart MacGill and great glovesmanship from Adam Gilchrist stumped the captain on 31.

V.V.S Laxman joined Dravid in the hope of providing another historic partnership to ruin the Australians and it all appeared to be on track as Dravid and Laxman put on a partnership of 70, filled with the trademark flair of Laxman and the composure of the naturally gifted Dravid.

However McGrath again proved to be the party wrecker, dismissing Dravid, caught by Clarke on 48, and then clean bowling Laxman on 46. The Indian innings appeared in an extremely dangerous position when tea was called at 3.40pm with the Indian score on 6/181, Dravid (48) and Laxman (46) the top scorers with Patel (13*)and Pathan (1*) the not out batsmen.

McGrath lead the team off the ground at the break, after an inspirational 18 overs that provided 4/73, ably backed up by MacGill (13 overs 2/20) and Shane Warne, who bowled tirelessly and without luck to contain the batsman to 0/38 from 20 long overs.
