thanks champ,
clarke is batting very well but disaster has struck the australian lower order. hondo and streak getting rid of katich and then gilchrist warne and lee all going for ducks. now it is up to gillespie to hold on as clarke is still 20 runs off making back to back hundreds. its gonna be tough but we will have to see how it pans out.

Match Report - Stumps Day 1

A marvelous fightback by the Zimbawian bowling attack has left australia reeling at 9/218. michael clarke still unbeated on 88 with glenn mcgrath the last man available to help clarke to the end on 0* at the end of todays play.
the main catalyst for the collapse was heath streak. the former captain bowling brilliantly, along with douglas hondo to have the australians in deep trouble towards the end of the session. the rot started when katich was bowled brilliantly by streak for a slow, gritty 31. the next 4 wickets, gilchrist (0), warne (0), lee (0) and gilespie (6) all fell in the space of 6 overs as clarke watched the chances of him reaching back to back centuries decreasing by the minute. the pitch had leveled out considerably and batting was becoming signficantly easier for clarke and katich.
now all eyes will be on the "wonder boy" of australian cricket and his number 11 ally as they attempt to get clarke over the line for his 4th test ton.
stay tuned

Australia Innings Completed

With Glenn McGrath and Michael Clarke resuming on day 9/218, clarke still a very long 12 runs away from a 2nd consecutive century, both batsmen new the role they had to play in the early overs of the morning. clarke was keen to protect mcgrath and take as much strike as possible as he edged his way to the milestone. mcgrath, looking more and more like a defensive number 11 pebble (no where near rock), looked to see as many balls out as possible.

finally, over 30 minutes into the 1st days play Michael Clarke brought up his 2nd consecutive century. with a simple leg glance to square leg clarke brought up a gritty 100 in a patient 224 balls. mcgrath had performed his duties with great determination, however it was short lived, clarke only facing another ball before mcgrath was caught behind of the bowling of streak for 11. clarke unbeated on 100 to take the team from an extremely difficult postion to a somewhat equal situation.

besides clarke, the focus was placed on the zimbabwian bowlers who bowled marvelously to contain and bowl out the australians for only 245. the main strikers, heath streak (4/45) and douglas hondo (2/15). the two quicks really led a young zimbabwian attack and have left the game firmly in the balance.

below action shots from australias first innings
- mcgrath doing all he can to get clarke over the line as tatenda tiabu looks on
- a comfortable leg glance and the 100 is up
- celebrating his 2nd hundered in as many innings - the makings of a great cricketer

245 ALL OUT is certainly a low total going by Australian standards..

But I guess Australia might get the lead here!!! I dont think Zimbabwe would take the lead!!

Zimbabwe 1st Innings - Day 2

With a gettable 245 the only thing between zimbabwe and a first innings lead against the world champions, the pressure was on the australian bowlers to restrict and bowl out a zimbabwe batting lineup that has been accused of lacking depth in recent time.

the zimbabwe openers, ebrahim (44) and marillier (22) started the innings very well before mcgrath struck, having marillier caught at slip by warne. mark vermeulen batted well for a constructive 25 before being adjudged LBW to katich. Lee claimed his first scalp of the match picking up ebrahim with a great delivery.

however after an extremely promising start, the zimbabwian middle order couldnt continue with wishart the only man to cross into the 20s. it was then left to number 8 and 9 - ervine (24) and blignaut (23) to rescue the innings and get the total as close to australia as possible. in the end zimbabwe were bowled out for a competitive 213, ebrahim top scoring with 44 and g.mcgrath the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/46. warne going wicketless.

this left australia with a lead of 32 runs and 5 overs to face before the conclusion of play on day 2. unfortunatly these 5 overs were fruitful for the zimbabwe opening bowlers streak and blignaut, taking the crucial wicket of hayden - LBW to blignaut for 4. australia finishing the day on 1/12. still with a great deal of work to do to establish a sizeable target for the zimbabwians

Stumps Day 3 - Australia in trouble

The clouds rolled into harare after the completion of the days 2 procedings leaving a high chance of rain in the days play. unfortunatly all but three overs were washed out. however these two overs, like the 5 completed by australia late in the 2nd day, proved to be a disaster. after loosing hayden for 4 on day to, australia were looking to consolidate the innings. however langer fell for the same score, LBW to heath streak 1st ball back from the rain interval, trying to defend to the off side.

this left australia reeling at stumps on day three. the score sitting on 2/16 martyn unbeated on 4 and ponting yet to score. tony greig spoke to both captains at the end of a frustrating day for both teams

tg - hello i am here from a gloomy harare sports club with the two captains. ill start with tatenda taibu - tatenda how are the boys feeling after a very impressive display here.

tt - hello and thank you. everybody is really optomistic in the rooms. obviously we would have liked to have played alot more today but we will just have to see how the rest of this game pans out. hopefully the rain will stay away for a while. we dont want to just draw this game, we have 2 days to play and we definatly think we can win this one.

tg - well i feel you are definatly in the mixer. what about your fast bowlers, today streak and blignaut, include hondo from the 1st innings. you have to be happy with their peformance

tt - yes very much so. they bowled very well both days. they are our best chance at getting close in this match and are the key reasons why we are in the position we are in. however if you look at the lineup of australia we have got hayden and langer out but they batted very deep. we will need to get constant wickets tomorrow to ensure we have a chance at a win.

tg - thank you tatenda, best of luck tomrrow. ricky ponting, whats going through your head right now?

rp - to be honest tony im just glad today is over. it wasnt the easiest day, sitting around waiting to bat and then when we did the quicks bowled very well. we are under the pump a bit at the moment but i have full confidence in our middle and lower order. there is still pup (clarke) kat (simon katich) and gilly (adam gilchrist) left to bat and then the tail im sure can do a job for us. while ill be the first to admit we arent where we want to be right about now, i still feel confident in a victory, wether permitting ofcourse

tg - hopefully the rain will stay off long enough for a good compeitive match here in the last 2 days. just on the zimbabwe innings, what did you make of the bowling?

rp - i thought we did a reasonable job. didnt do as much as we would have liked with the new ball but we do have the lead and we finished strong, glenn again bowled well. 3 for, hes just so consistant.

tg - here here. well good luck in a crucial day for the boys tomorrow. all the best with the bat for yourself personally aswell.

rp - thanks greigy
