Lehman dumped as Australia arrive home

Yesterday Cricket Australia suprisingly announced the dumping of veteran batsman Darren Lehman from both the test and one day squad ahead of the Australia Vs New Zealand one day international in melbourne played today.
Selector Trevor Hohns announced the dropping of the former test star to the Australian "A" team effective immediately due to what Hohns put down as "a view to the future". Lehmans spot is to be taken by up and coming queensland allrounder James Hopes.

At the current point in time, we are really looking to get some of the young kids some high class international experience. James has picked up some very good hauls with the ball in the minnow season (season running alongside the international season involving teams such as bangladesh south africa "a", pakistan and india "a" teams, nabibia and kenya) and he has proven very handy with the bat, scoring a couple of 50's. We just feel that at the moment it is the best idea to let Darren slot into the "a" team and help the younger players continue their progress and also to give James a chance to find his feet. He will be a real player for the future.

The match between the trans tasman rivals had a historic feel to it as both don the kits worn back in the 70's. A sell out crowd filled the MCG with anticipation and excitement. A flat rather lifeless wicket was prepared by groundstaff and upon winning the toss, New Zealand captain Stephen Flemming decided to have a bat in a bid to make a sizeable total on a ground noted for being difficult to bat on last.

Match Update - Symonds bowls Australia to strong position

A memorable bowling display from star allrounder Andrew Symonds has put Australia in a very strong position as New Zealand were bowled out for 145 infront of a sell out crowd in Melbourne. Best bowling figures from Symonds (6/15 from 6.2 overs) helped Australia restrict the visitors, who took command early on thanks to N. Astle (20) and S. Flemming (30). The only other noted contribution from the batsmen was the top score from Scott Styris (36). But it was Symonds who stole the limelight on a day devoted to the retro kits worn in the 1970's. The talented allrounder claimed the final 6 wickets of the day as Australia will be set 146 for victory on a wicket not favouring the batsmen or the bowlers.

Innings Analysis - Ian Healy and Mark Taylor

Healy - Welcome to the post innings show here from Melbourne. Today we have seen one of the best performances in the one day arena with the ball as Andrew Symonds took complete control of the match through his bowling spell of 6/15 off 6.2 overs. Mark have you seen a display quite like that?

Taylor - I have seen some very good performances with the ball over my time in one day cricket. However this was something very exceptional. I dont think anybody saw it coming, most viewers would have expected Hogg to grab wickets with his spin but Symonds just proved he is one of the best allrounders in one day cricket.

Healy - Very much so. So mark did you enjoy the old fashioned clothing?

Taylor - Haha yes isnt it great out there. I have heard that Cricket Australia will look to replay matches against some of its opponents in the one day competition by using some old kits. One that springs to mind will be the colombo match vs Sri Lanka. I have heard reports claiming australia will use the 1996 world cup kit. It should be great to watch.

Healy - That would be great. Well thats it from here. Back to the action.

Australia cruise to 5 wicket win

World Champions Australia cruised to a 5 wicket victory over New Zealand in the One Day International in Melbourne today. Needing only 146 off the back of a Andrew Symonds haul of 6/15, Australia needed only 32.1 overs to eclipse their rivals target.
The Australian innings got off to a slow and cautious start after a good spell of fast bowling from veteran Chris Cairns 2/21 as he claimed openers Hayden (1) and Gilchrist (11), both trapped in front LBW as australia slumped to 2/14. Damien Martyn (24) showed signs of his form returning before also being trapped infront, this time by Butler who was replacing Daniel Vettori after the left armer injured himself several weeks ago.
It was captain Ricky Ponting and eventual man of the match Symonds that guided Australia to the victory, Ponting smashing a brutal 54 while symonds chipped in with 34*. On the last hurdle, with only 20 runs left to chase, Ponting was out caught in the deep, his dismissal quickly followed by Clarke (2) which gave James Hopes a taste of international cricket. Which he accepted with style, remaining unbeaten on 9.

The premeture conclusion to the game clearly stamped Australias authority over its competition in the one day arena and leaves australia in good stead for the much anticipated match against india in eden gardens.

yeh he is just playing some great cricket. his innings in zimbabwe was just power and he just has a knack of picking up wickets. he is on top of the wicket list with 11 at the moment. he is providing some real stability for me. the top order may have to change soon though. not performing at all

Well played Australia. Disappointed to see Hayden not perform yet again, but I'll sure he'll do well against India.

Also I think you deserve some reps (like Mr. Champ) for providing the updates of other matches!!
