I think both McGrath and Langer should share the award. Also one must not forget the ever consistent Michael Clarke who scored a brilliant 170!

McGrath again proves key as India fall short

Glenn McGrath again proved to be the key for Australia as the world champions swept aside a defiant Indian team in the test match at Kolkata today. Needing 300 runs to make the world cup 1999 and 2003 champions bat again, India fell 46 runs short with still over 2 sessions left to play.

McGrath, continuing on from his first innings collection of 6/88, claimed decisive figures of 4/80, taking him to match figures of 10/168 from 50 overs.
The home side were led once again by in form batsman Rahul Dravid, who backed up his 48 form the first innings with a stablising 72. However the indian line-up struggled to match the 3/503 total set by Australia on days 1 and 2 and eventually the toll of 2 days in the field to start the match and the relentless pressure from McGrath (4/80 off 28 overs) and Shane Warne (1/58 off 37 overs) took its toll on the middle order.

In a dissapointing display from the home sides batting line-up, key players Sehwag (24), Tendulkar (26), Ganguly (25), and Laxman (31) all making impressive starts but unable to occupy the crease for a long enough period to make a big score. Much of this can be attributed to both McGrath and Warne. While Warne again struggled to snare wickets, his tight and consistent bowling enabled pressure to be applied from one end while Ricky Ponting was able to use attacking bowlers McGrath and spinner Stuart MacGill (18.4 over 3/33) to tempt the batsman and take wickets.

Overall it proved to be an extremely well planned and calculated performance by the world champions, proving to be one of the reasons that the side has been so successful.

- India scorecard - Many of the middle order were able to make a start but not go on with it
- Australian bowling - McGrath and MacGill led well but it was Shane Warne that frustrated the attacking indian batsman.

Post Match Wrap Up - Ian Healy

IH - Good morning and welcome back to the Edens Gardens ground in Kolkata. News in from the ground is that Australia has just clinched the test match with Stuart MacGill trapping Pathan infront trying to sweep with still 2 sessions left to play. With me I have down here Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, Surav a little dissapointed from the display here? Can you take anything out of it?

SG - Hello Ian, to be honest i dont think there is a great deal that we can take from this match. Im very dissapointed in the way we batted throughout the match and we really let the Australians dominate the way we went about our cricket. That shouldnt be our style. We have a team capable of making 500 regularly against any team in the world and we couldnt even do that in 2 innings combined. This is a real low point of our season.

IH - What do you think were the key reasons for the defeat?

SG - We had Australia in a good position when they were 3 down. Unfortunatly we gave Clarke and Langer a couple of chances and they took full advantage. From then we couldnt get our heads on and they walked over the top of us. Our batting probably suffered due to the time in the field and also because we didnt bat together.

IH - Well thank you very much for your time Sourav, best of luck with the rest of the season. Well next up is a delighted Ricky Ponting, Ricky your first win as captain here in India, how do you feel at the moment?

RP - Well youve allready said it Heals, im delighted. This is great. The boys really stuck together well in this test and all worked for each other. In the previous matches we struggled but thanks to Lang and Pup (Clarke), we could set the total and the Pigeon (McGrath) and Stu (MacGill) took the game away from them with the ball.

IH - Yes the boys did very well. However just on the point with Langer and Clarkey, again Hadyen and Martyn struggled. Is this posing a concern for you at the moment?

RP - Yes it is a little. Its something we may have to look at soon. We are heading back to Sydney for the test against Sri Lanka so there may be some changes for the test match. But we will have to consider a few options.

IH - And what about your Symonds selection for this match... He didnt even get to bat!!!

RP - *Laughing* yes thats true. But he really helped with the ball and was great in the field. Hes such an asset.

IH - Thanks punter. And next up is the man of the match, or should i say men of the match. With me is Justin Langer and Glenn McGrath. Guys well done.

JL - Thanks Heals

GM - Yes thanks very much.

IH - Guys quite simply, youd have to be over the moon yeh?

JL - Very much Heals. I was struggling to get some runs on the board but i felt good in the nets before the test. All of a sudden it just clicked and then the runs flowed. Hopefully it will continue against Sri Lanka in Sydney in a couple of weeks.

GM - Yes Heals, this is a great feeling. My bowling has been coming along nicely and to finally get a large haul is very nice. Fingers crossed I can keep it up so i can get to talk to you some more after the game *laughing*

IH - Oh wouldnt that be a delight... Well thats it from down here on the ground. Do join us again when we bring you live coverage from the Sri Lanka and Australia ODI from Galle next week. Its sure to be a blockbuster with too very attacking teams.

excellent story and coverage so far mate

what patch are you using?

Lol 2 Aussies are the leading test scorers and then 2 Pakistani's are the leading ODI scorers :)

Congrats on that comprehensive win over India. It was a supreme performance by the World Champions.

Looking at the table, Australia, England and South Africa have a 100% record in the Test Championship, and I expect Australia and England to be fighting for the top spot, with Australia winning it at the end.

Also it will be nice to see the Galle stadium hosting a match. It was really sad to the pictures of the ground after the Tsunami aftermath.

haha yeh but galle was my favourite ground before it got whiped out so id rather play the game there.

It wouldn't be realistic though...considering that in real life the stadium is in Shambles.

But,this isn't real life,so I say go ahead :) ;)
