Lancashire Vs Somerset

A cracking innings by Mark Chilton was the highlight of session, I think we have amassed a good total and i think we should be able to go into the second innings with a decent lead, Somerset do have a very capable top order but on this pitch and with the bowlers we have they should struggle, Flitnoff and Anderson will we key factors as will Cork with his swing. I would have called for the declaration soon anyway so we wouldnt have added too many more runs.

The first wicket was that of Glen Chapple, he played a superb support innings including a half centuy but then was run out trying to up the run rate, he is a vital player down the order and he showed that today notching up a 50 at number 9, not many counties have players who can do that, a word has to go out also to Dominic Cork, he and Chapple added 93 for the 8th and 9th wickets. That is the sort of match winning performance we can come to expect from these two.

Murali had the orders to go out there and slog it, that didnt quite work as i had planned it, i was hoping hat he would get 15-20 runs down one end while Chilton kept on at the other, that wasnt to be as he edged one to the slips first ball, he will redeem himself with the bat though, i am sure of that, espcially on the last day.

James Anderson hung around for 10 balls before an absolute inch perfect yorker got under his bat and crashed into his stumps, he scored 2 which has got to be one of his highest scores ever :) I gave him the same instructions as Muralitharan although he isnt as gracefull with the bat. His work is still to come, his opening bowling will make or break the match and we are in a good position so i owuld hate to see it wasted.

Somerset dominated most of the dinner session on day 2, Graham Smith nearly making it to 50 and Marcus Trescothick passing it, Three quick wickets during the end dragged Lancashire back into it though, Cork and Anderson couldnt use the pitch to their advantage so i called for the bowling change and Flintoff and Chapple did the job. I found that because of the depth of our seam attack if a pairing arent taking wickets then i can switch to another pairing and know that they are equally good.

I didnt take a screenshot of Graham Smiths dismsissal unfortunately so i will have to describe it. He played very well allongside Marcus Trescothick and i noticed that we struggled against two left handers at the crease at one time, something we will have to work on, Anderson and Cork were trying to swing the ball away which wasnt really working, eventually Chapple got it right and got one to swing back in at him, he missed it and his middle stump was shattered, he was dismissed for 49 from 101 balls including 7 fours.

The second wicket to fall was extremely vital to our progress and i was jumping up and down when Chilton took the catch at square leg. Sanath Jayasuriya gone for a duck after just 7 balls, what a dream wicket to get rid of this dangerman so early, Chapple had his tail up and threw in a few yorkers, he then pelted down the bouncer which Jayusuriya fended straight to Chapple at square leg. He was trying to be too defensive and i have a feeling that had this ball been thrown down in the middle of the session it would have been dispcatched for four.

We were going well after grabbing two quick wickets before Tea, i couldnt have dreamed of what happened next, Flintoff came steaming in to bowl the first ball of the last over before tea and tried to entice Tresco into the drive, he took the bait hook line and sinker as he followed the ball and nicked it to Cork at first slip, what a major breakthrough that was, just after making his 50. I can always count of Freddie to come up trumps when the match demands it, he is a great player and a cracking personality, taking nothing away from Marcus though, he a great innings and is a credit to himself.

I Still think that at the moment Somerset have the upper hand but with two new batsmen at the crease if we can sneak another wicket soon after the break then we will gain the edge, i think i will stick with Glenn and Freddie after tea as they bowled so well, expect to se Murali towards the end of today or tomorrow if they last that long, stay tuned bacause this gripping match is getting tight and it looks like Briggsey could be right with his prediction about the draw.
