13 April 2005
Frizzel County Championship Division 2
Old Trafford
Lancashire Vs Somerset
This is the type of session i am going to come to expect from the lads over the season, they really did themselves proud. The main factor was that they used the pitch to their advantage, they put the ball in the right areas and got the rewards, well, all except Daminic Cork, he was the only bowler not to take a wicket. I told him not to be downhearted because everyone has there bad days, the real difference between a good cricketer and a bad cricketer is when you learn to bounce back from the down days, he seemed to take it in but im not so sure that he wasnt sniggering....
Andrew Flintoff was the main man with the ball this session, the big Preston lad shouldered the weight of his reputation and bowled his socks of for the cause, he got his first wicket in his second over when he dismissed the usually stubborn Matthew Wood, Wood had got off to a flyer scoring at a very good rate but ended up poking at an outswinger that also nipped away, a big edge was caught by Anderson at third slip, that was the breakthrough that got out tails up and it just went from there...
Aaran Laraman was the next victim of Freddie Flintoffs and he was walking back to the pavillion after facing just 1 ball, a very full ball, almost yorker length and in-swinging from Big Fred, tried to clip it to the legside but was beating fro pace and movement and it hit him flush on the toe, not much of a descision for the umpire and Somerset were lest reeling on the ropes by the England International.
I figured it was time to turn the screw so i replaced Glenn Chapple who was bowling at the other end with Muttiah Muralitharan, now, as a batsman, you know you are up against it when you are facing Murali from one and and Freddie from the other, it became increasingly hard to score runs and even harder to stop wickets falling, Murali claimed the first of his three when he got one to drift across Ian Blackwell and spin away from over the wicket to the left hander, it took the edge and Warren Hegg made no mistake behind the stumps, Heggy is going to be vital this season to Lancashires successm he is a cracking gloveman and is no mug with the bat, lets hope he continues in this veign of form.
Andrew Flintoff was brought out of the attack and was replaced by James Anderson, the condtions were perfect for him and he managed to get two wickets in his little spell, the first was that of Turner, he changed his length to just back of a length for an over and it worked! The third ball was hit straight at Mark Chilton who had been placed strategicaly at square leg for that particular reason, good captaining by me if i do say so myself, just a little confience booster for Anderson seemes to spur him on, he bowled fantastically after that inducing many played and missed and LBW shouts.
Muralitharan claimed his second Johnson, the ball ripped out of his hyperextened action, pitched way outside of and jagged violently back in, the tailender had already left it and could do nothing but watch as it zipped past his pads and crashed into middle stump, one of the best deliveries i have ever seen! What a first match in charge this is turning out to be, i am having a fantastic time here at Lancashire and this team can go far....
Our Sri Lakan spin king produced another peach of a ball a few overs later that forced McLean back to the changing rooms, it pitched on middle and forced the shot, McLean knew the ball was turning to he drive to drive with the spin, he didnt know how much it was turning evidentaly as the ball once again ripped a long way off the seam and took the edge to Andrew Flintoff at first slip, you just cant keep these men out of the action, after a double team bowling effort they are now playing catch, its a great feeling to know that you have these sorts of players at your disposal, when i was at Derbyshire that catch might have gone down or the ball would have come off the middle of the bat and not the edge, its these little things that make the difference between winning and losing.
The last wicket to fall was that of Neil Hancock, he was James Andersons second victim of the innings and he faces only 6 ball and scored just a singular run before he took a big swing an an Anderson in-swinging length ball, i personally couldnt hear the nick from up on the balcony but all the lads in the slips, Heggy behind the stumps and Jimmy went up and obviously the umpire heard something as well because he raised his finger to bring the innings so a close, after watching a slow motion replay and with the use of a snick'o'meter i can confirm that the noise was from his bat flicking the floor on the way through....
I was so proud of the lads when they came back in to the changing rooms, not just fro getting the job done but for the way they went about it, they never got ahead of themselves, even when Freddie knocked over two men in two balls, at that stage they were still thinking, theres 5 more left and thats potentially 5 centuries, i have only been with the squad for 3 days altogether and i can already feel us gelling, its a great experience and like i said before, things can only get better, i think we have a great chance of winning promotion back to Division 1 in the county championsip this season because we have a super talented squad!
