Another grafting session from the lads, i am extremely pleased as to how this match is playing out although i would have liked more runs in this session, the early wicket stopped up from doing that as Mark had to slow down whilst Brad Hodge got himself in. The wicket came at a bad time, Stuey Law had just gotten himself in and started to put his foot down, when we come back out though Hodgey should be able to do that so it wasnt too bad, it just means that we will only have a day to bowl them out.

Stuey came up the steps to the pavillion, looked at me on the balcony and shrugged his shoulders and when i looked at the replay i realised why, the ball pictched on middle and leg and then nipped away ferociously leaving Law stranded on his middle and leg stump, if i didnt know any better i would have said it came out of Shane Warnes hand, a closer look at the replay showed that it hit a divot seam up and it shot out the opposite way, a freak delivery im sure because there were no more bowled in the session, in fact the batsmen were hardly troubled.

Change of plans, i will now declare tomorrow moring, the reason being that we could probrably reach 370 at a push by the time i wanted to declare, that to me is a reachable total in a day and a bit, therefore i will be looking at 450 by the time we declare, we could have reached near that total if the early wicket hadnt have gone down because we could have really pushed on but thats wasnt to be so we will just have to wait and see what happens...

Lancashire Vs Somerset

Lancashire: 367/6 Declared

Lancashire lead by 484

I made the descision to call the lads back in after a few quick wickets had fallen, there was no point in trying to get a bigger score because it is highly unlikely that Somerset will chase this down on a fourth day pitch. The declaration from me came an hour into the morning session so that leaves us two and a half sessions to bowl them out which we are fully capable of doing, we just need some very quick breaktroughs early on and we have the bowlers to get that so i am optimistic.

After playing such a vital role in the first innings Mark played another critical part in the second, he has a season average of 232, two centuries in two innings inclusing one not out. He played sensationally in this innings an thouroghly deserved to reach the landmark, however, his wicket sparked a collapse which was partly my fault, after the partnership was broken i told the rest of the batsmen to just slog, see if we could get some quick runs. The wicket well when a slower ball by Johnson got the better of Mark and he prodded it back into the bowlers hands, soft dismissal really but i cant moan...

The linchpin that is Andrew Flintoff came in next looking to score big runs quickly, he stuck around for 41 deliveries, in that time he racked up 31 runs inluding four blistering boundaries, this was all in the space of three quarters of an hour, a back of a length ball temped him into driving on the back foot and in the end he was cramped for room, he edged it through to the keeper and a handy innings came to an end.

dllwmq.jpg

Marcus North went out to the middle and decided to take guard on leg stump to free up some room to play his shots, he hammered his third ball for a boundary through the cover, then ran two quick dropdown singles, he eventually met his match when he played a defensive shot to a ball that uprooted his unguarded off stump... Never mind, he made some runs in the first innings and scored a four here so its no biggie.

Heggy took a long time to score his 5 runs, it didnt matter though because at the other end Brad Hodge was motoring, he wanted his century before we declared, he was playing his shots to all parts. Heggy went for the big one, the haymaker back down the pitch, unfortunately Hancock is a bit faster than a spinner and the only contact made was ball on stumps, Heggy trudged off feeling aggreived that he hadnt done better, he has done a cracking job with the gloves for a very long time though so he has nothing to worry about.

The last real batsman Dominic Cork really took it to the pace attack of Somerset allong with Brad Hodge. Cork hammered 22 from 16 deliveries with three fours, thats the sort of innings i wanted to see form the last three batsmen, Freddie played a good knock but Heggy and Marcus didnt really get going. Bradley Hodge was outstanding, he hammered a fantastic century and thanked me afterwards for not declaring untill he has reached the landmark, i told him that it could only do wonders for his confidence, even is he finished on 99 not out, he would never have know whether or not he would have gotten that last run for sure, latting him get his century puts him in no doubt about his ability and boosts his confidence for his next, he thanked me again and went to get changed and ready to field.....

I played this session a long time ago, i have been wrapped up in PCR so much that i forgot what happened, i looked at the spider and assumed he scored 96 but then i remembered i declared after he scored the 100, i took the spider screenie at the end of day 3, i thought i was only going to bat for an hour into the last day and its not worth doing two updates so i just did the end of innings one. All fixed now!

I couldnt have asked to a better response from the boys before the lunch break, they came out and played some really good cricket, Jimmy and Glenn opened the bowling and bowled very well but didnt pick up the quick wicket i was after, Graham Smith and Marcus Trescothick are both international standard cricketers and have captained their national side at one point or another, they are no strangers to positions such as this and we werent expecting to skittle them both for ducks, we just had to be patient and take our chances when they came, we did that and the waiting paid off, Somerset go into the lunch break three down.

James Anderson wasnt bowling at his best and Glenn wasnt really testing the openers so i decided to change it up, the first bowling change was Freddie in and Jimmy out, i decided to give Glenn one more over because Corky wasnt quite warmed up properly yet, he came steaming in with the first delivery of his last over and produced the edge, he was previously going around the wicket to the left hander but i thought it was best for a change as they were both getting comfortable, i didnt expect instant results but such is this game of cricket, Graham Smith offered a defensive stroke and pushed at it too much, it sailed sharply into the hands of Stuart Law who pouched the first real chance of the innings.

It never takes Freddie Flintoff long to impose himself onto the game and make an impact, two overs in fact, Sanath Jayasuriya was the unlucky party, he tried his best but after Freddie produced two corking outswingers from around the wicket that got him playing and missing the inswinger got him plum in front, good bowling by Freddie and we were happy at grabbing two wickets before lunch, i expected them to leave almost everything so i tried to get the lads to bowl at the stumps meaning that they would have no choice but to play, they fended the deliveries off well though.

dmvi1e.jpg

By this time i had brought Corky into the attack and the pair of them were bowling at pace and getting the ball to swing, a couple of LBW descisions were tunred down that on another day or in another scenario would have been given without thinking, i was fuming with the umpires over some of them, full and straight, hitting the batsmen on the full and given not out, Trescothick didnt really give anything away but Wood Should have been out a few times. In the last over before lunch Corky stuck in a clever slower ball from around the wicket, the off cutter, it did for Trescothick and made him look stupid, one of the last balls before lunch, he was just looking to defend everything, it backfired and Somerset found themselves in a right mess!

Like i said before, three wickets in the space of an hour an a half is a great achievement for the lads, i was really pleased and of course the wicket collumn is the only thing we will be looking at, its not a question of them chasing the runs its a question of can they bat out two whole sessions whitout losing 7 wickets, my guess, taking into account our current form, is no. If we get a quick wicket after lunch then it will give us a stranglehold on the game, even if they get a partnership going and the ball gets old we have bowlers who can reverse swing at pace and also Mattiah Muralitharan, who, on a fourth day pitch, is lethal. We are in a great position and i cant see us not winning from here. Stay tuned for more action soon!
