Okay so let's maths this quickly.

So the statement was simply ODI players. They both play different roles; Gilchrist is an opener, and Buttler bats between 4 and 6 most of the time. We'll do VARPs within these parameters.

Adam Gilchrist - 9,200 runs @ 36.50 (SR: 98.02, 16 centuries, best 172) in 259 innings as opener
VARP: +51.87%

Jos Buttler - 3,691 runs @ 41.47 (SR: 117.92, 10 centuries, best 162*) in 108 innings between 4 and 6
VARP: +45.04%

So it's very close, but Gilchrist was marginally further ahead of his peers. He was also a better wicket-keeper and on-field captain.
