The Zimbabwe Situation

What was the previous government like? Maybe you can ask someone who was with you about the situation

He has been the head of government in Zimbabwe since 1980 so I really have no idea (I was born in 85). I am pretty sure it was more or less the same.

What action has been taken in the past? and how much of an effect did the boycott from Australia have? I did notice that the media is twisted by the government in many quotes that I have found from the newspapers

Is there an online zimbabwean newspaper? I will check

Yeh i got all those links and read through them about 100 times so far, there are alot of political cartoons avalible but I have them all on my school log in so i cant show you

the government has carried out anti-gay campaigns against both men and women.

He wants women homosexuality to be banned aswell.

The reaction with the boycott was pretty big. Zimbabweans LOVE their cricket and the little ones would love nothing more than seeing the Aussies play. Personally I disagree with the decision from cricket Australia and I think that the tour would do nothing but boost the youngsters enjoyment of the game and actually give them some quality stuff to watch.

Whether or not Zimbabwe would've lost every game means nothing. To some of those kids as I said cricket is everything and just seeing a player like Gilly or Ponting would put a smile on their face. WONT SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN! :p

But in all honesty how safe would they have been while on tour? and what do you think of Stuart MacGill and our prime minister John Howards stance on the issue

In all honesty, Zimbabwe is very similar to South Africa and Namibia crime wise from my personal experience and if you aren't going to Zimbabwe because of 'safety' then don't go to South Africa or Namibia.

I feel the only real reason Australia should've backed down on is the whole thing with Mugabe. Ponting would've have to shake hands with the man and Howard felt that supporting him is wrong and sends the wrong message which I do in some ways agree with. But Mugabe has been doing this for years, and it didn't stop Australia going there last time.

And about MacGill, can you inform me on what his stance is with the country? Is it just he doesn't want to support Mugabe or is he worried about safety?

He had the same stance but made his voice heard and was alot more outspoken. It was a big issue at the time because he was just a backup player trying to get into the team

Well I don't really care.. Players can have their opinion. If he is too chicken to come to Zim he doesn't have to. As I said, I didn't see any different there crime wise than there is in South Africa and Namibia.
