Towns and Cities rebuilt. Lives remade. All happened in such a short space of time. It was only the 15th of February, 13 days after we arrived in Russia and Moscow had already rebuilt most of the damage and was recuperating from the war with Japan. Many things had happened in the 13 days, many important things. The first thing to have happened was the end of the war. Great Britain, U.S.A, France and China were all ready to declare war on Japan, but Japan and Russia negotiated a peace treaty. Thank god there won't be a World War Three!
The second thing was that I had a meeting with Lokomotiv Moscow's chairman, Alexey Kharkov. I drove to Lokomotiv Moscow's 28,800 seater stadium ahead of my meeting. I arrived a good hour early, to make a good impression. I really wanted this job, it would just make my life. I was told to go to the Chairman's suite. The Chairman has a suite?! Now that is pure quality.
I arrived at the Chairman's suite. I knocked on the door and heard a voice from inside, sounded like a groan. Meh, could of been him shouting for me to come in. I opened the door and walked straight ahead into the room. There was no-one in the room. I heard some noises from another room in the Suite. I walked into an open room. The closer I got the louder the groans got. I looked in and...
"OH MY GOD!"
"Mr.Edmonds! Uh yeah, Mr.Edmonds! Great to see you..."
The Chairman was on the table of his secretary, with his secretary. Yes they were unclothed and were enjoying each other. Anyway, we're not going to focus on that... He quickly got dressed and we proceeded into the room which I first entered. He was slightly red but he hid it quite well behind all his 'bling bling'.
"So, Mr.Edmonds. I hear you have come here to become the manager?"
"That would be correct."
"Well I'm sorry to say this, but I can't offer you the job at the present time."
He looked at me, not showing any kind of emotion. It's like he didn't care he was breaking my dream. I felt anger, disappointment and a degree of no self worth all at once. It was as if he was heartless. I had to come back with something just as witty and I had to show him I was no joke.
"*******."
I walked out of the room and walked straight out of the doors. I got in my car and drove. I thought of all the opportunities that had now gone down in flames because of him. They said they would one day give me a job as my playing career was lost, but no. They're not going to give it to me. I rang up Mani to tell him about my very brief interview.
"Mani, it didn't go well."
"Ah that's not too bad, there's always Shinnik."
"Yeah, I guess."
"In fact they have offered you the job of manager..."
"Really?"
"And I said yes on your behalf."
I hung up as soon as he said that. That was about 10 days ago now and I'm actually pleased Mani did that. The lads are all fantastic as is the staff. We have a team that is better than I thought it was and we are one of the favourites of going up, now that I am at the helm. The chairman said he wants promotion and that's exactly what I'm going to give him.
