Well that was certainly a great final.
Pakistan really played like warriors...

One would get amazed by looking at their performance in the earlier and mid part of the worldcup.
where they won just one of their opening five games including a lucky abandonment after Eng had bowled them out for just 74.

their 4 victories off their 8 games includes one against the Impressive NZ n a dismal AUS..the rest consisted of the then minnows..SL n ZIM.

wrapping up that was not a performance anyone could be proud of...
seems as if their worldcup triumph was fortune favored.

but watching their performance in the last 3 games (NZ..league/NZ Semi/ENG Finals) tends to shift the momentum to a different direction..as that was truly a champion like performance.

Whats your Opinion.?
Please note that i m not targeting any particular group of crowed..nor i have any other such intension.this is just a topic of discussion.Hence usage of harsh words for me or anyone else is not advisable//

I don't see anything wrong with this thread, as long as people don't turn it into a Pakistan vs India debate.

Anyway, interesting point of view Anuj. Pakistan were definitely down and out at one point, and I've heard many people say it that maybe Pakistan weren't the ones who deserved to win that WC, but by that logic Australia shouldn't have won the 87 WC as Pakistan were easily the favorites to win that tournament (much like Kiwis in 92) and may have done so had they not been screwed by Dickie Bird's horrible decision at the semi final. But that's just cricket ain't it!

well was india's win in 83 a fluke too?

how they beat the windies we will never know

may or may not be...i was born in 1987..cant comment on it,

but as of 1992..i watched the cup ...i even have recordings of many of the matches,
so i have monitored their gameplay..
they were really outstanding in the later part of the tournament..

but you got to agree they got the semi final berth because of 2 points against Eng in the league match instead of a zero

ok...India were a Crap at WC92..losing to ENG,SAF,WI,NZ,AUS......
now you are happy/

Sometimes in sport the underdog wins, sometimes teams that don't play the best win. Wouldn't it be boring if the favourite/best team always won?

Winning a world cup is never a fluke.
How could it be? It's a damn long tournament!

A fluke is a rarity, something that happens once in a while. Pakistan of '92 had many great players like Imran and Akram, not to mention a fantastic batting order.

You don't win a World Cup without deserving it somewhat. Sure they had some easy wins and losses early. When the finals came around they were at the top of their game.

Well If Bangladesh have won a match against Australia, that can be Fluke.
India and Pakistan have lost against Bangladesh and Ireland in 2007 world cup, that can be Fluke.
But Someone winning a World cup,Can't be Fluke.
Have you seen I Khan Bowling in Semis and Finals?

Its just like Brazil in 2002 in Football/soccer world cup and they were sort of ordinary and Belgium got a dissalowed goal for no reason and it ended out 2-2but later on in the tournament they were godly.

You have to rely on luck to win in sport (or war, for that matter), no doubt about it. The trick is in what you do when luck does turn your way. If you are unprepared for the batsman to hole out, you will spill the easy catch.

Pakistan had stars, but what was striking about 80s Pakistan was how much of a team they were. The whole was greater than the sum of its parts. They defined resilience against the West Indies and for home games in general, they had effective plans.

Perhaps good bowlers are more important to carrying out a plan than good batsmen. Retrospective rankings demonstrate the power of their bowling lineup on 21/02/92.
Code:
3 Waqar Younis PAK 741
4 Wasim Akram PAK 726
6 Aqib Javed PAK 719
11 Imran Khan PAK 625
23 Mushtaq Ahmed PAK 574

Their win was by no means a Fluke..
They were Outstanding

But their Semi Final Berth was a kindof Fluke,
by Getting 2 Points after getting Bowled Out for 74..
they pipped in West Indies n Oz.
