Which has been the most memorable World cup Final?

Their has been nine World Cup held so far:

1975, 1979, 1983, 1087, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007.

Some of the finals were simply out of the world.

However to me 1975 the inaugural final was the memorable.

Clive Lloyd?s Outstanding and Captain?s knock of 102 in 108 balls with 12 majestic fours and 2 glorious sixes was well supported by Kanhai?s classy innings of 55 runs and a good innings of 43 by all rounder Boyce as well.

Gilmour and Thommo bowled their hearts outs and returned with match figures of 5 for 48 and 2 for 44 respectively.

Who can forget Richard?s 3 Bulls Eye Run Outs?

Ian Chappell led the way for Australia with a glorious 62 and Turner contributed well for a good knock of 40.

Last but not the least what a last wicket fight back by Thommo and the Great Lillee.

In the end West Indies prevailed over Australia by mere 17 runs.

The Final had everything one can ask for: Quality Batting, Quality Bowling,
Sharp Fielding and a brave fight back by Thommo and Lille.

Which World cup Final do readers like as their favorite /memorable? One?

I will appreciate your participation/comments.

Cheers!

.

Yes. Those were very good as well.

If I had a 2nd and 3rd choice then it would be :

2nd Choice : 1983 When India won an Upset win over the West Indies.

What a performance India displayed!

The catch Kapil took to dismiss the Big Boss Richards is worth its weight in Gold.

Because that was the turning point of the match.

After Viv left West Indian Innings folded easliy.

This was not only a proud moment for India but for whole of Asia as well because this was the first time a cricket nation from Asia had won a World Cup. It was like David (India) prevailing over Goliath(West Indies).

3d choice - 1992 . Pakistan beating England

Excellent win for Pakistan . From a position almost at the bottom of the table who would have ever thought Pakistan under legendary Imran khan through sheer motivation and dynamic leadership would come out with flying colors.

In particular Wasim's all round display sealed the game for Pakistan .

I remember Gavaskar who was commentating from another country was asked
after the match by another expert as to what was the difference between Pakistan and the English team.

He said " Engalnd had bits and pieces bowlers good enough to contain batsmen but not good enough to take wickets when it mattered most. Paksitan had specialist wicket taking bowlers.Today Wasim and Mushtaq proved that"..

I also remember for his bold support for Pakistan Gavaskar was invited as a State Guest by the then President of Pakistan.

This was the second time The world cup went to an Asian Nation.

Cheers!

2003(Australia vs India)

They were boring. It was practically slaughter. World Cup Finals should be close and make you rip your hair out while watching them, not 1 sided affairs where you know a team will win before the game starts.

I have really, really high hopes for the next world cup. It will come at a perfect time in world cricket. You have India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand being the 4 best and they are all capable of beating each other. I'm tipping the next one to have a great final.

Welcome Aussie_ben91!

1999 Semi-Final ;)

Welcome Aussie_ben91!

If I were to choose one of the greatest Oneday World Cup Match in terms of Quality, competitiveness ,Excitement, thrill It would be unquestionably be The 1999 Semi Final between Austalia Vs South Africa. It was neck to neck all the way. In the end Fortune smiled on Australia and the rest is History.

Off course the Final was very much One sided . However in an earlier Group B match between Australia and Pakistan it was a close and classic match.

I remember I saw the match live in a movie theater. What an innings from Razzaq(60), Inzi (81) and a late rally by Moin Khan 31 from 12 balls with 2 four and 3 sixes.

Great innings from Michael Bevan(61) and well supported by Waugh(49) and Ponti(47).

But wasim with an inspired spell of 4 for 40 won the match for Pakistan albeit narrowly 10 runs.

1983 final and 1999 world cup semi-final

Welcome Gary123!

Great Choices.

Those were classic matches. I pretty much own - DVDs of all the World Cup Finals and Semi final Higlights except 1987 which is commercially not available.

The 1983 final and 1999 World Cup Semi Final are the ones I relive from time to time to feel the excitement and thrill.

Both are top class matches in terms of Thrill, Excitement.

I felt bad for one of my All time favorites - Viv Who after the match appeared sad.

But India had earned it deservedly. That was a reality and History.

Like million other Asians I felt very proud as the Cup would be belonging to Asia at least for 4 years and also the fact India had proved to the world they were capable of beating the best in the wiorld .

Well, I've seen just two WC finals live, 2003 and 2007. And one WC final's repeat telecast on Neo Cricket. The 1983 final which India won! I'll choose that as the best amongst the three. It had twists in every turn. After India's innings was over, nobody, just nobody in this earth thought that India would win that one. But the Kapil's Devils showed the whole world that the game's name is cricket, and here anything can happen any moment. It was quite like a suspense thriller. And I really enjoyed it.

1983 was the best (even though I didnt watch it live), the mere fact that we upset a champion team West Indies and that too after scoring just 183 runs, it was a CLASSIC! Most of the others were easily won by the side that eventually won

2003 :) Amazing innings by Ricky Ponting.

Never saw the 1992 one but in highlights it looked great as it was a close game.

Welcome ali_ed2001!

That was indeed an amazing innings form Ponti (140 from 138 balls with 4 fours and 8 sixes SR 115.70) ? Definitely one of the best live Ponti performance I have seen.

Damien Martin and Gilchrist also contributed handsomely with power packed 88(RR -104.76) and 57( RR - 118.75) respectively.

However in the context of a Final it was a one sided affair as India who played so well prior to this match where trounced by Australia by 125 runs that took away the glaze of a Final.

The only consolation from India was a Masterful Innings from Sehwag the lone fighter who blasted a Hurricane 82 from just 81 balls that contained 10 cracking boundaries and 3 glorious sixes( RR ? 101.23).

The other match you mentioned - 1992 Final : Pakistan VS England . I was fortunate to see live a superlative team effort from Pakistan under the Legendary Imran and they delivered when it mattered most.

Battingwise Imran, (72) , Javed (58) and Inzamam( 42) all contributed well.

Fielding and catching were sharp.

Bowlingwise Wasim proved why he was the best bowler at that time with two peach of deliveries that knocked out the stumps of Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis in successive deliveries and followed up with a breathtaking power packed display of Batting (33 of 18 balls with 4 fours and an incredible RR ? 183.33) that enabled Pakistan to reach a decent score of 249.

Rest is history.

Good chioce. It is in fact my second choice.

I had seen the Highlights several times.

Awesome pace attack - Roberts, Garner, Marshall and Holding.

All Looked like demons ready to kill its prey.

Garner was hurling the ball at awkward height. Marshall looked more threatening and intimidating than Lillee.

Holding accurate as ever.

Roberts took most wickets 3 followed by Marsahll 2, Holdings 2 and Garner 1

But to me Garner and Marshall looked very deadly.

In fact Eleventh man Sandhu was hit by a Vicous bouncer from Marshall .

However Dicky Bird immediately warned him not to do it again.

Also the catch by Kirmani at First slip to dismiss Gomez was out of the world.

Overall a thorough professional peformance to beat an invincible West Indies by

a wide margin.

It is something to cherish for a long long time.

Cheers!

The world cup match that was the best one in my opinion was SL vs Aus in 1996.

Good choice!

A victory against the reigning World champions is indeed an incredibe feat and when you have done that against the best Pace attack in the world - Roberts, Garner, Holdings and Marshall at their lethal best it is even better.

Kapil's Dare Devils proved that if you have self Belief and give your best(100%) it is possibe to beat the best.

This victory was worth its weight in Gold.
