Why isn't Daniel Vettori performing well in Tests?

I think vettori needs to develop more variety at this stage in his career. Even if he starts spinning it big time, he will eventually be worked out. I wonder if he can develop a Doosra for a left arm spinner? I know he has the arm ball but a doosra will be a different thing to deal with. It will spin into the right handers and will bag him a lot of lbw/bowled dismissals. I don't think any left arm spinner has mastered or even tried doosra. Why is that?

He's tried to develop the doosra, but he found it changed his bowling action too much, and ruined his rhythm.

Like everyone has said there is no reason to go after him, especially when some of the other bowlers in the side are having a bad day. The only real problem I have with Vettori, is his bowling during the final innings, he doesn't have the variations to trouble the batsman on any pitch, as said before you can stonewall him if you're trying to draw the match, or just wait for the bad ball and look to cart the other bowlers around.

I think the selectors & coaches realises he needs to bowl in tandem with another spinner in the majority of matches, they've got Patel at the moment, but he's an awful choice to pair with Vettori, I think he needs to be partnered with a wrist spinner or even better a finger spinner who can turn it both ways.

I think if we can find a decent spinner for him to play off he could possibly drop his bowling average below 30 before the end of his career.

Patel isn't that bad. He spins the ball the other way, sharp turner of the ball, decent accuracy. What's wrong with him?

Nothing, I'd say that Patel has been bowling better then Vettori in test match cricket as of late. He bowled really well against India

Well I think he needs a better coach to teach him how to ball Doosra without ruining his action and rhythm. Saqlain Mushtaq can be approached for help.

Its probably because most of the left arm spinners have a slightly side on (or slant if you like) bowling action.
To bowl a doosra,you need to release it with a straight arm-rotation action.
Saqlain Mushtaq,Harbhajan Singh and Saeed Ajmal do that.

This is a very valid point but I think adjustments can be made. It easier said than done though.

@sami ullah khan

A SLA bowler I've always found doesn't really need a doosra if he has a good arm-ball, which Vettori has. Coming around the wicket an arm-ball pretty much does the job of a doosra.

Yeah Howsie that may be true but Vettori already has an arm ball but even then his test bowling average is not what it should be. He should not average more than 28 as a spinner to be classified as a great. Its just that he has lost a bit of effectiveness and little more variation can make his bowling a lot more venomous.
