As long as they aren't buying something at the checkout and using their mobiles same time it's fine. I mean if I get a message, I am not going to wait till I finish my conversation.

But usually I look at the message then sort of "cool" "ok" "haha" the conversation till they leave.

Know what grinds my gears? When I'm talking to that ****** Gazza and he fliping messenger locks every fliping minute. He doesn't go 10 minutes without messenger locking! He asks me how to install FM, so i start to tell him, and without warning he fliping messenger locks!

I know quite a few people who do ride and they always blame the cras. Although I think it's just the amatur riders screwing up all the other cyclists. IMO there should always be a little bike lane or just a bike track for them.
