Considering Matthew Hayden is clearly the best opening batsman in the world by a large distance and probably the greatest Opening Batsman to ever grace the game of cricket. If choosing a World XI, who would be a more suitable player to open the batting with him?

Are you having possibly the biggest laugh ever? How arrogant can you be?

He was being tongue in cheek. Relax.

Although Hayden can't be far from being considered one of the best openers to have played the game.

Anyway i'd pick Smith as he's an absolutely class player and a class captain. He's a proper cricketer and I only wish he was English. Sehwag's alright, but he's bald.

No longer answer from me this time. Sehwag is a flat track bully, albeit a very good one, and Smith has South Africa as a home country and has succeeded pretty much everywhere, with the exception of Australia - and this was probably due more to the opposition than the pitches. This cannot be used as a legitamate negative point of Smith, either, as Sehwag has shown massive inadequacies against any sort of seam movement in to him.

Yeah sorry I've just re-read it. I would rather have Smith batting with him

To answer your question ben,as to who should open with Matty Hayden,I'd say Sehwag.

However,if we just compare the two-it has to be Smith.

How many player v player threads will you open today...:p

anyway Smith is better sehwag is nothing but a slogger...

Graeme Smith is actually one of the most key batsmen in world cricket. A Smith century is a very big influence on a South African Test match, he has never scored a hundred in a losing match and only four times in a draw. By some degree of contrast, if Virender Sehwag gets a hundred, don't expect a result.

I'd go for Sehwag in Tests, Smith in ODIs. Flat-track bully he may be, but very few players in the history of the game (I believe 3) have managed to get 2 triple-centuries. There have been plenty of flat-tracks in the world but no one makes use of it like Sehwag.

He's also to be tested against the moving ball since his comeback although one must remember that he played quite well in Australia--one of the hardest places to tour and do well, especially as an Indian player.

Sehwag is inconsistent and his reckless starts have been one of the main reasons India haven't won as many games as we could have when he was a regular. One big knock in a barrel of innings isn't good enough IMO.

So Smith.

He gets going about once in 20 innings against an opposition like Bangladesh. In ODI's at least.

In tests he's decent, still too rash I feel.

Tests or ODIs? It's unfair to blame our losses in Test matches on Sehwag when we had a bowling line-up that probably wouldn't have scared club cricketers.
