what India needs is a good all-rounder. a bowling all-rounder. Flintof would be a perfect fit for them, than they could play Kumble and Harbhajan. Because playing a test with just 2 pace bowlers is not good at all.
India doesn't need another middle order batsman they just need their current middle order batsman to get their act together or retire if they cant because there are plenty of good youngsters waiting t take over.

VRV was in mid 140s in his early days. Not even was discussed ever in selections.

When he became medium pacer he was selected though.

Maybe they were banking on him to go back to mid 140s once selected?

Honestly, we have about 7 or 8 fast bowlers in contention for 3 spots in ODIs for sure, and maybe 5 fighting for 3 spots in Tests (4th to Kaneria)

Asif is out getting high on what he thinks makes him a better bowler and what makes him happy.
Shoaib is trying to come back after being pardoned for about the 10th time in his international career and he is 32 or so.
Umar Gul is unable to put a test series together because he gets hurt too much.
Arafat is being shun even tho he could be a good bowling all-rounder for Pakistan.
