According to PC Gamer, after all the problems with games + Vista, Microsoft are working on a new Windows, version 7, that will be designed with gamers in mind.
I'm very dubious! What do you guys think, have you heard anything else about it?

I think this release in 2009 is a bit of a rumour, a bad one really, there's no way as to that because MS is itself making the Vista SP2 and I don't see it released before February.

I'm not too excited about Windows 7 either. Its nothing but a Vista repackage. The base of the OS, the kernel and the Driver model remain the same, so its basically maybe some libraries and features in Windows 7 which can be far outclassed by third party softwares on Vista. Moreover, I can see Windows 7 being blatantly overpriced, after what they did with Vista!

Vista's a fine new OS in its own. I'm not bitching about a change to a new OS - infact I was one of the earliest people to adapt Vista, even before SP1. But that was because it was an overhaul, a complete overhaul of its 5 years old Predecessor. But repackages? No, thank you. :)

Windows 7 is a repackage as Kshitiz says, It should be released in P4 of 2009 or
P1 of 2010. It will be overpriced but the Windows Aero look will change slightly. Tabbed apps
will appear. e.g paint will have the same tabbed options like Microsoft word 2007.

Microsoft have just blown half of their money on a advertising campaign. after seeing the
first 2 ads i have to say it sucks. Se7en is just another Windows ME. A update with crap
add ons. I hope microsoft actually have ago at making it better before releasing it. Vista is a great designed operating system. It just has to many bugs and problems. I can't complain to much about microsofts bug fix Se7en as Apple are doing the same thing with 10.6 (snow Leopard)

I heard a rumour somewhere that after Windows Se7en Microsoft are to discontinue windows as a operating system and create a new one under a different code name. Can anyone give info on this?

Plus Windows 7 has been around for ages. first codenamed vienna i think back in 2007.

Yep.. As soon as Vista had been launched and rejected

So this isn't a OS for gamers then, just a rebadged Vista? Thought it was too good to be true...

What I felt when Vienna was announced, was that, Vista was an unfinished product, and was launched only due to the pressure from the computer industry relating to the lack of any activity form Microsoft in the last 5-6 years, after the launch of windows XP. (XP SP2 being the only major launch).
MS was constantly delaying Vista, and it was soon going to lose its charm. What MS did was, allowed vista to be the intermediate product between XP and (then so-called) Vienna, the sort of thing that would keep the industry quiet (or talking about it) for an year or two, giving itself more time to finish the unfinished work. This had 2 clear advantages:
1. Brought in more cash
2. Gave more time to Microsoft, and according to me, it lowered the people's expectations.

I say it lowered the people's expectations, because, looking at the shift from XP to Vista, in 6 years, not much has changed. Vista still has that Xp'ish feel to it. Now, if they manage to launch their new OS next year, I'm sure people won't be expecting heavy changes. If they do get in new features, and complete the next gen OS, they should beat these expectations, because, theoretically, 9 years of work has gone into that OS.

Se7en (or whatever it may be named) has a huge potential to become the next XP (something that Vista failed to achieve, even though it was highly likely), provided that they do their work properly, and don't try to force the OS on the people.

If you are expecting an OS not built on vista technology, you'll be out of luck for a while. Vista with a few extra bells and whistles, oh and touch (so touch screens like the iphone for your laptop). The OS after that will be built from the same platform and so on until they need to change as technology jumps.

Microsoft are in the business of selling Operating Systems, they will keep building new ones, it's not a matter of how much they liked the previous one. Think of it like a car. Ford builds a car, then they update it a few times, then the build a similar one but slightly different, then they eventually replace it completely. One thing is for sure, they don't go backwards. You wouldn't see Ford reusing the old Sierra design instead of the current Mondeo one and you won't see Microsoft doing likewise.

I love Win Vista.
I just don't understand why people hate it.
For me it work with every game and Program i have.

people love vista but hate the problems. that is what i think. the bugs and annoying "are you sure you want to open this it could be a virus" messages are what bugs people

Contrary to many people's opinions on software development processes in large companies, Microsoft probably hasn't been waiting around on Vista's impact to see what to do next. I wouldn't doubt that they have at least 2 other completely different operating system projects floating around the company, that they have been developing over time.

Also, I'm not sure what people mean by Vista isn't making a big impact. Vista's usage is up to 13% of the market share. That's a pretty big chunk to gain in about 2 years. The rate of adoption has increased, as well, which means businesses are finally thinking about and beginning to switch over. It is interesting to note, though, that XP's market share has stayed pretty much even since Vista has been released, and most of the market share has been gained from Win2000 and Win98. These two OS's were long heralded as the best server and consumer operating systems from Microsoft.

This trend suggests that it's only a matter of time before people start using Vista more. I am certainly a convert and cringe when I have to go back to a computer with XP on it.

Personally, I am a fan of the UAC. It allows me to know exactly when someone wants to use sensitive resources. Making a couple extra mouse clicks to keep my computer secure is not something I'm going to complain about.

Lucky you, you have got to be in the minority, going by what I've heard.
Most of the people crying out there are those that just don't know what their doing, and call some added security as "Bug, it won't let me run it!". Out of the people left out, some of them are those that have hardly anything in their PC's(.5 Gig of RAM and a 1.6Ghz P4) and complain that it works sluggish. The very least minority actually left out of this does have genuine problems, but hey who don't have them?

Look at XP. Its brilliant now. What was it when it was first launched? Terrible, a really terrible piece of work, especially in terms of security. So many security loopholes and performance drawbacks hardly anyone switched over 98/2000 to XP. Then came SP1 which couldn't change things a lot. It was only after the launch of SP2 of XP that it became the de facto OS, something which was considered the best.

So going with that, I'm actually impressed the level MS has attained with SP1. Fixed most of the problems people had, actually made it faster, and more snappier, better memory management, load times etc. The one thing where MS went wrong was making 6 editions out of the same windows.

Vista SP2 is in the works. Although I don't have many expectations from it I would be waiting for its arrival.

Windows 7 might make it as the next XP, possible, but then see the scenario. Vista was a complete rebuild, just like 2000, while Win 7 will be a Vista repackage, quite like XP. They had more time to polish their OS and add and subtract what needs to be done according to user response. That kind of a cycle is natural.

Vista annoys the hell out of me. Every few seconds "Are you sure you want to do this?" Of course I want to bloody do it if I clicked on it! Also when I close the msn window, I get a message saying "MSN is still running." I'm not stupid, I know it is. So yeah, that's my two pence.
