Hashim Amla - The new wall?

:p

This is why Badri is a godsend. Dravid has a few years left but Badrinath is the perfect replacement. Got the technique, talent, and temperament - everything that we need to stabilize our middle order.

A fair enough, didn't see that.

Amla is more like Laxman. They have their weaknesses, but on a dull or dusty track, they have the patience to bat all day. However, they prefer pace and both of them really shine on a pitch that is a bit quicker, offering more opportunities to get on the back foot or flick the ball hard into gaps.

Laxman is a rare player that can adjust to the higher bounce really well in Australia, that is why he has a fantastic record against us. Pitches like Brisbane and Perth that suit high quality fast bowling he plays well on.

Rahul Dravid = The Wall.

His presence would have definitely mattered in the 1st test.

The innings at Sydney is the one I remember most. They simply could not bowl to him outside the off stump.

:laugh Amla's never going to be as good a batsman as Rahul Dravid, unless he makes drastic changes to his technique. He's a good player, but some of the praise he's been getting around here since he made a score against India is just ridiculous. He's having a good year or so, I don't expect it to last. There's very little chance of him going down as one of the greats of the era for me. He's not even in the top 3 most talented batsmen in his team.

A bit like Damien Martyn?

Like you said he will soon become a permanent fixture in the ODI team and he should remain a crucial part of South Africas middle order for years.

Only if the selectors are smart. They dropped amla(man averages over 40 and a strikerate of 82 in odi's) and replaced him with a hack like bosman(averaged a massive 17 in our domestic odi comp) for the odi part of the indian tour.

Hash will probably never be an all time world great. But he together with kallis are the best number three's we have had since readmission, both averaged 49 at number 3 in about the same amount of games.

Amla isn't as gifted as some players, but he makes it up with immense powers of concentration. He's delicate and a joy to watch when on song. My favorite part about Amla is that he doesn't get pressurized, and plays along the ground. He makes the team earn his wicket, especially in these last two years. That knock against England in the first test, was just great. It took a completely unplayable ball to get him out, but that was a great innings. Better than the double for me.

But lets not compare him to Dravid. There will only be one Dravid. That's how immensly talented that man is. You can't replicate him.

Let's just let Amla be himself instead, and not throw comparisons around.

Indeed. The only player i'd is comparable to Dravid as "The Wall" in test history as a #3 is Ken Barrington.

...Maybe Jacques Kallis as well too.

Amla has massively impressed me, tbh, I felt SAs best batting line-up a year ago was the one they have now , but with Prince instead of Amla.

what's really good about him is that he seems ideal to play in the sub-continent with those wrists, and taking charge of the no.3, for south africa, you couldn't really dream up a more ideal player right now.
