Smart money on Punjab this year. On the basis of cricketing logic, Mumbai Indians have the strongest side and by some serious margin. Don't know why they've pushed the mega auction by a further year but it's great for Mumbai.

Wonder if it is a sense of 'loyalty' from players like Bumrah or the Pandya brothers or if they receive extra money from the owners via 'off the field' deals like a certain Neymar in football. If they were to go on the auction, teams would splurge money on them. I like Punjab's team too, well balanced with an intriguing if untested captain but if I had to pick one team to suddenly implode for no reason too, it would have to be Punjab.

Punjab should just bench Gayle and use him for marketing. It will keep the balance of their side.

MI have benefited massively by investing in a young Bumrah & Pandya. Those two are now international's and basically Bumrah is legitimately the most important player in the pool. To have him at 7.5 crores is just an absolute bargain. I'm positive some under the table deals are in place, but it is what it is. MI also benefit from moron trades by opposition franchises. I don't know what DC were thinking letting Boult go to them for a poultry 2 cr. SKY was a huge asset for KKR in their formative years and MI got him cheap. Qdk keeps wickets and opens the batting and he's traded in from RCB for 2cr. Plus, their galaxy of support staff.

I hope they don't pick him because of the stat that they were the most successful opening duo in the last two seasons. While Gayle was good, Rahul's excellence had a large deal to do with it.

Assuming that Maxi joins late, I imagine Gayle gets a few games and if he struggles they don't hesitate to bring the former in. I would personally love to see

:wkb: Rahul
:bat: Mayank
:ar: Maxi :os:
:wk: Pooran :os:
:bat: Sarfaraz
:ar: Neesham :os:
:ar: Gowtham
:bwl: Jordan :os:
:bwl: Bishnoi
:bwl: Shami
:bwl: M Ashwin/Porel (would prefer the latter but the pitch might ask for the former)

If one of the domestic bowlers flop, you could always bring in Viljoen or Cottrell (wasn't in the best form in the CPL which is why I'm keeping him out for now) instead of Neesh.

How much are we banking on DC? This year they have a good mixture of youth and experience and their spin bowling line-up further adds to their advantage. The attacking Captaincy of Iyer makes it even more tough for the opposition to beat them when it would be spinning around with slowness of the pitch. I believe Rishabh Pant's performance is crucial for them to succeed with the bat.

My line-up would be

:bat: Dhawan
:bat: Prithvi Shaw
:ar: Stoinis :os:
:bat: Iyer :c:
:wkb: Pant
:bat: Hetmyer :os:
:ar: Keemo Paul :os:
:bwl: Axar
:bwl: Ashwin
:bwl: Rabada :os:
:bwl: Mishra

Other option is to move Axar up and play Lamichaane in place of Keemo Paul

Players like Rahane, Carey, Mohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma would unfortunately miss out unless Dhawan doesn't perform and they feel like going to Rahane.

DC is looking very strong this year and I would be surprised if they do not make it to the playoffs. And the time is ripe for a breakout year for both Iyer and Pant

Delhi are short of one all rounder
It would have balanced the team perfectly, still they look strong this time

I would definitely play Karun Nair at 3. I think Pooran at 4 with Maxwell at 5 or even 6. Maxwell is best left with 5/6 overs in my opinion. Yes, he will win you an improbable game like yesterday but that will happen once in ages. He is a massively underrated bowler and hope KL uses him well. Sarfaraz has made runs like it's as normal as breathing and I think Mandeep Singh is one of the more underrated finishers in the IPL. There is also Deepak Hooda who never really got a fair crack at SRH. I would actually have Gowtham at 7 and play Cottrell/Mujeeb and not Neesham. I think Jordan is good enough to bat 8. Bishnoi has to play. Has to. Ishan Porel is a good addition to the side but I'll be interested in seeing how he bowls at the death. I think him and Shami are both new ball bowlers and one of them has to dance with Jordan at the end.

I genuinely feel KXIP is the true dark horse and apart from an unproven death bowler to partner Jordan they are a gun side. If I were a betting man, my smarts would be on them. I think UAE will be a spinner's haven and KXIP have an abundance of them all of whom are either vastly underrated or totally unknown. Watch out for Bishnoi! He might just be that second death bowler as well.

If they play Chris Gayle, I guess we can conclude that the moron owners are again messing with Kumble's ideologies.[DOUBLEPOST=1600339525][/DOUBLEPOST]

I think if you had another mini auction, they would pick another Indian opener. They're either paranoid about it or have lost their plot.

What I think is it's a sheer waste of Rahane to be in Delhi. I don't think they would want to move Dhawan or Shaw and it means Rahane would hardly get a game there. I could just feel for him. Hope they release him mid-season to some other team so that he could actually play. DC should rather have someone who would play in the middle order.

The auction was originally postponed out of 2021 because IPL 2020 was indefinitely postponed. But yes - now that IPL 2020 is happening this year, it makes sense to bring back the mega auction on table before IPL 2021. I know I might be having a selfish bias here from CSK perspective as they desperately need to disband their side and induct fresh/younger faces and prepare for a "post Dhoni" life, but every team went into the previous mega auction thinking that the next one is happening in 2021 and its only fair for all that the mega auction happens before IPL 2021.

I have no selfish outlook. Just what's fair. If anyone can also explain the brainless trades to MI, I'd feel better.

think logistically man

The IPL will get over by november

and next one will be around march april

are 4 to 5 months enough for a mega auction?

its not just about 1 day for bidding

its whats before and after

think from organizing POV, it takes alot to conduct these things

even for franchises, it takes a lot to prepare for auctions, scouting, pre season camps, training and tournament stuff

Do we know for sure the IPL will take place in March/April? I like how the whole world has convinced themselves that this pandemic is nearing the end just because lockdowns are lifted and people are fed up. Mark my words, the worst has yet to hit us. When it comes to life, sport is a very small part of it.

This conversation changes complexion when we start looking at an IPL around the same time next year?

I think the decision to postpone the mega auction is a very hasty one. We are in a situation where the goalpost is continuously moving. A lot of teams are doing poorly in the IPL and another year of languishing for bread crumbs and losing sponsors is not good for the health of the franchises image or reputation. The entire world is working on their computers and it's bananas to think an auction can't be done even if the IPL is in March.
