Not good batting from NSW. I expected a close match but Indians were completely dominanat. Looks like Indian batting and bowling is in good form. I am sure this will be another classic series between two.

Australia Signal Changes

Australian coach John Buchanan today announced that there would be several changes to the lineup ahead of the dead rubber 3rd One Day International between Australia and South Africa at Cape Town.

Buchanan indicated that experience was the only factor in the reshuffling of the team as Australia look to develop some of its younger players ahead of a tough season including test and one day series agains India, Pakistan, West Indies and England.

"We have changed about 3 guys around and allowed a few to get some match fitness and some experience against one of the toughest teams going around. James Hopes will come into the side, along with Simon Katich and Shaun Tait. Damien Martyn will be rested as well as Andrew Symonds and obviously Jason Gillespie will be out for a while with his injured ankle."

(Shaun Tait and James Hopes have impressed in the domestic ING Cup competition while Simon Katich is recalled to the one day squad.)

3rd One Day International - Pre Match Analysis with Mark Nicholas

The Pitch

In comparison to the belta of a wicket we had at Johannesburg last week, this pitch at Cape Town looks to have a little bit in it for both sides. I dont think the bowlers will lick their lips but they can be sure that it will play a little bit slower than that of Jo'burg. It may take some time adjusting to the facilities for whoever bats first.

The Teams

As per the last 2 games, South Africa come into the game with the same unit that faced the Australians in the previous heartbreaking losses. Australia have made 3 changes from the previous lineup. Martyn, Symonds and Gillespie make way for Hopes, Tait and Katich.

The new faces in the Australian lineup could be a suprise packet. No one is sure how they will play and the result could go either way.

Key Players

Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee were taken to the sheds by Graeme Smith last time around so I would expect them to come back strong for Australia. As for the home side, I think Shaun Pollock might come into his own if given enough opportunity.

(Veterans Shaun Pollock and Glenn McGrath could provide the keys for both sides in todays game)

The Outcome

I think with the state of this pitch South Africa can still hope to get a result. However with the two consecutive heart-breaking losses I am worried about the mindset of the teams. Confidence has to be down while Australia are riding the wave of success at the moment and i think this will get them over the line.

Match Introduction

The Toss - What They Said

Australia have won the toss and have elected to field on a pitch Mark Nicholas described as being "slow and providing enough for both bowlers and batsmen."

"This is probably the first pitch prepared so far that looks as though it may have a little for the seamers. It wont move a long way but I think the bounce may be a little up and down so we will make first use with the ball and hopefully get a few early wickets. We have come in with 5 quicks and then probably Clarkey to bowl any spin necessary so hopefully we can restrict the South Africans here and contain the total so that we can chase it down tonight."

Ricky Ponting
(Australian Captain)

"Unfortunatly the tosses havent gone our way at all since the Aussies have arrived. We probably would have liked to have had a bowl but this isnt a pitch that will cause us a lot of concern. We can still make a good fist of this match and hopefully salvage something from a dissapointing one day series"

Graeme Smith
(South African Captain)

McGrath Fires Early - South Africa 1/2

Glenn McGrath took the wicket of Graeme Smith in the second over of the game to immediatly put South Africa on the back foot at 1/2.

Smith, carring on from his 90 and 128 in the first and second innings respectively, looked to attack the quick early on in the innings but was caught at deep square leg as he attempted to loft McGrath through the leg side. Shane Watson took a straight forward catch only metres in from the fence.

Gibbs Falls Cheaply Again - South Africa 2/23

Herschelle Gibbs continued his horrid series with a dissapointing 9 as he became the 2nd victim of Glenn McGrath as the Proteas slipped to 2/23.
Gibbs was tempted into a mistimed drive by the nagging McGrath, which allowed Ricky Ponting to take a straight forward and comfortable catch at short cover to dismiss the opener for 9.

It capped off a bitterly dissapointing series for Gibbs, who was unable to manage a double figure score in any of his 3 innings. His 4 in the first ODI was followed up by 9 in the second. Resulting in a total average for the tour of 7.33.

McGrath Runs Hot - South Africa 3/28

Glenn McGrath took the vital wicket of Jacques Kallis to put South Africa right behind the 8 ball at 3/28. Kallis was caught at a wide 3rd slip by Matthew Hayden on 14 as he became McGrath's 3rd wicket for the innings, a strong comeback from the poor performance in the previous match.

South Africa will now rely on Boeata Dippenaar and Jacques Rudolph to salvage and consolidate the innings.

South Africa In Trouble - 3/32 (10.0)

South Africa are in deep trouble at the 10 over mark of the first innings in the 3rd ODI at Cape Town. Glenn McGrath did the damage early with 3/13 from 5 overs while Brett Lee kept his end tight with 0/19 from 5.

(Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee hit back to form with a classy performance to limit the Proteas to 3.2 an over and taking 3 wickets)

McGrath Leaves With 4 - South Africa 4/75

Glenn McGrath captured Jacques Rudolph with the last ball of his 10 over spell to leave South Africa in trouble at 4/75 from 20.0 overs. In the most debated call of the day, Rudolph was adjudged LBW attempting to play the pull shot to a ball that stayed low. However many felt that the ball may have hit to high and may have also been outside the line of leg stump.

McGrath finished his spell with figures of 4/42 from 10 overs. Showing his class as he faught back from a poor performance in the last match when Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis took to him with ease.

McGrath showed the skill and talent that has made him the key in the Australian lineup. And shows that when he fires, the Australians generally do very well.
