13th Match, Group A - CSK v Victoria @ Port Elizabeth

Horrible, absolutely horrible decision from Dhoni. He started off with Bollinger, but changed to Ashwin in the last minute.

Ashwin was hit for big sixes today earlier by Finch. Bad move! Will demoralise him too.

Not Nannes, McKay?

anticlimax.

Bolly was pissed off it seems, and rightly so. Don't understand why you'd pick Ashwin over Bolly, or even Murali.

Victoria wins! But CSK did amazingly well to take this to the Super Over. Well done boys! Victoria were always ahead of CSK, but Murali, Raina and Bollinger brought us back so well to take it to this Super over

Had Ashwin clicked, Dhoni would got all the flowers. Today he didnt click, and Dhoni will get the brickbats. Its the game. Not right on Bollinger to react like that (it seems he kicked the hoardings, and showed his anger quite openly). JUST NOT RIGHT!! Dhoni is the captain, he takes the decisions. Get on with it, Doug!

because Dhoni is an average captain

Wouldnt mind that at all seeing the way he had led us so far in his captaincy career. He is by far the best choice we have. And he has kept us close to the top (or in the top) in all rankings.

Well, nothing more to say when we have fought so much & gave up in the last minute. CSK has done an exceptional job anyways. :hpraise We didn't have a bad day, it was just one bad minute for us where Ashwin was subjected to massive pressure. :)

because Dhoni is an average captain

No, wrong! Bringing in Ashwin is a very bold/courageous move that would have costed in either way & remember - Ashwin is not a bad bowler either.

Ashwin got smashed in the game, its not as if he was on fire. It was a foolish move when you have Bollginer waiting to bowl. Its not as if he bowled well either, rank long hops and full tosses in the over.

Stupid move

It's surprising that people fail to distinguish skillset & pressure. Even a highly skilled player make mistakes under pressure & those full-tosses were exactly those. I am not defending Ashwin, but it wasn't a bad move to bring Ashwin. When Raina can do it, obviously Ashwin can do it as well.

This is the tournament to get exposure for young blood!

The biggest difference, in the end very literally, was the boundaries. It was nothing short of irony that Ashwin, in bowling the Super Over, conceded two thirds of Victoria's sixes.

Uhm, not right? If you'd pick Ashwin to bowl ahead of Bolly and Murali in that situation, that's a piss poor decision. Just based on how they bowled during the match. Considering Finch had smashed him as well, and David Hussey being a class player of spin, it was a bad move, as you'd have predicted that those two would be 2 of the 3 batsmen that Victoria picked. Hussey said at the presentation that he was only going to come out if they lost a wicket, but when he saw Ashwin he decided to bat ahead of Wade, which turned out to be the match-winning innings.

Pretty piss poor decision from Dhoni. Ashwin was a gamble, and I would've definitely picked the safe choice in Bollinger, considering that a win here would've put them in the semis. He's not an average captain, but sometimes he makes some really puzzling decisions. Raina bowled well today, and pulled it off, but Raina wouldn't work everyday. Bringing him on at that stage turned out to be a great move, but Ashwin in the Powerplay was just a bad, bad decision. Of course, we'd be praising him if it went well, but it didn't, and thus it's a bad decision.

Not sure how I can dig up stats on all Super Overs bowled but from what I remember spinners never do well.

Gayle demolishing Vettori comes to mind. I'd rather have a fast bowler and a very fine 3rd man than a spinner in the super over.

I don't think Ashwin bowled particularly badly in the Powerplay, he didn't look like he bowled the best line, but it was more that Finch was in amazing touch. Off-spin against Hodge is definitely a clever plan and opening with a spinner has been a popular and effective tactic in the last year or two.

He did get the wicket of Finch with a surprise variation, so maybe that was part of the plan. Nevertheless, he definitely did not bowl well at the end. It was almost as if he himself couldn't believe Dhoni's decision.

While Hussey facing Ashwin proved to be a master-stroke, it might have been an each-way bet. Wade and Finch could well have been the right match for Bollinger.
