Any Improvements?

Gosh, Usy, you add so much to a conversation.

But only because all domestic chat would have been directed to the one thread, in the past extra threads opened up for anything domestic have been closed. I think it shows how the site is losing its way when we have a whole forum for football but anything relating to domestic cricket is kept rigidly to one thread. I'd have thought the idea of separate forums would have been to encourage more varied discussion on domestic cricket.

I really can't see how cricket news "works really well". If you are looking for a thread you have to look in two forums as its just not clear what belongs in where. What's the point of having separate forums at all if you have a catch-all forum under the news banner? You can pretty much start any thread in the news forum cricket related, why bother with the other forums at all?

So what demand for other threads could you see for a domestic season then? I can't see much demand for a match thread, I doubt we'd have enough demand for individual clubs either. Maybe different tournament threads as opposed to just one big domestic season thread?

By saying cricket news, "works really well" I mean that it is better that the news stories go in one forum, rather than mingled in with Cricket Discussion in the older format (the one before the one just gone).

I think it is clear what goes in where, Kev. If a member thinks "well I know that player x is now top of the rankings, so I'll go to the news section", or they have finished watching England beat Australia (;)) so "I'll go to the current tours forum". Or do you mean it's "not clear what belongs where" in another way?

Maybe we could do some trial and error on the test fora, will have to bug WHM.

I've never quite seen the point of the cricket news forum, wasn't it scrapped ages ago?

I liked the layout that has just been changed, as Kev said you just needed to make more threads in the domestic chat, for example in England make threads for the County Championship [Div 1 &2], Pro 40 [Div 1 & 2], Twenty20 Cup and the Friends Provident Trophy.

Well here's an example of not clear. I dont know if the threads just haven't been moved around correctly but.

The "MCC vs Champion County" thread I started is currently sitting in Cricket Discussion not Domestic Cricket.

Aussie1st's thread "Rogers quits WA" is also currently in cricket discussion, but surely that could equally fit in cricket news or domestic cricket.

"County vs Aus Domestic" I'd have thought was a sure fire candidate for Domestic cricket, but its not there.

There are numerous IPL and ICL threads in the news forum, surely some belong in domestic?

As it stands currently you have just stuck some generic competition threads in the domestic forum, by your logic, if there are only going to be these threads in the forum then why bother to have it at all.

I suppose that is true. I think it was good before but they needed to lay down some ground rules of the differences between Cricket Chat topics and Cricket News topics.

I do like the new 'Your Cricket' thing

Instead of responding directly to posts, I'll just give my thoughts on this:

Firstly just to say, I'm the one who proposed both the original change and this current layout.

The reason for the quick change was that the difference between Cricket Discussion and International Cricket wasn't as clear as it could be, with the Cricket discussion forum just about dying in that time. From there it wouldn't make sense to merge those two back and leave the Domestic forum separate.

On to Domestic, I wasn't sure on this and value the feedback, I wasn't sure if subforums were needed. Ideally if they were used as wolf suggested, they make perfect sense, but the idea of the single thread seemed to be rusted on. I'm happy to move back to those subforums, but want to avoid excessive subforums. I feel to save excess navigation the Australian, English and Indian ones would have their own subforums on Cricket Discussion (so no sub-subfourms), but that leaves the problem of whether to have another forum for the other competitions or to put them elsewhere (feedback on this would be nice).

As for cricket news, the forum was made originally not for the benefit of the portal (cricket news has only just been added to it), rather to give more prominence to the previously almost hidden forum, which led to frustration from the news team. Adding the 'Cricket News' forum seemed a logical step, as the amount of member articles is fairly low. This created a problem, as to where the discussion went. I've posted here in the past the suggestion that no discussion take place directly in that forum, with a link to an appropriate thread (either new or existing) in the appropriate subforum (the correct one for the topic) included in news threads so people know where to go for discussion. But that post got no replies so I assumed everyone was fine with the current form. If no one has any input on this again, I'll just make the change.

Why not set the permissions so people can't reply to threads in cricket news but can post new threads. That way discussion can't take place in the forum.

It wouldn't be a forum if people can't post in it, might as well have a news section on the homepage if we do that.

Well I just opened all the threads on the first page of cricket news.

19 threads have been started basically just with quotes from other websites.

versus

2 with original articles. Of which 1 was essentially just an advert for some new kits.

I just don't see how this gets pride of place. Nothing wrong with starting threads with a quote/link to another site but I don't think they are showpiece threads worthy of a forum of their own which basically allows anything cricket related in it when there is a structured forum these posts can go into. To me the message this sends out is that there is no original content at the site and I'm not sure if thats the message you want to be putting across to new members.

Just a flaw I noticed in the Member's Articles section.

Even posts in the topic need mod approval, thus perhaps cutting short discussion.
Maybe only new threads require approval, while posts do not?

That would be the idea.
