Stuttgart edge five goal thriller
VfB Stuttgart held on to their perfect record at home this season following a thrilling 3-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Mercedes Benz Arena.
The Swabians had to take the lead on three seperate occasions to pick up maximum points and stay within striking range of league leaders Bayern Munich who beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0 on Friday.
Markus Babbel was without the services of key men Roberto Hilbert and Sami Khedira for this match and as result stuck with Sercan Sararer and Zdravko Kuzmanovic on the flanks with Peter Niemeyer getting a place in the center of midfield.
Markus Steinhofer was the only change in Eintracht Frankfurt's lineup which had a full strength squad at its disposal.
The visitors were looking for their first win in five matches in the league and came close to taking the lead the opening few minutes when Vahid Hasmehian rattled the Stuttgart crossbar with his shot from just outside the box.
However it was Serbian international Zdravko Kuzmanovic who opened the scoring when he smashed in from close range after Christian Trasch's throw in was laid in his path by Cacau.
Hasmehian's header ten minutes late drew the visitors level though and the veteran Iranian striker could have given his side the lead a few minutes but his shot was well saved by Costel Pantilimon at the near post.
Timo Gebhart that took advantage of some really shoddy defending from Eintacht Frankfurt by firing in a shot from the right hand side into the top corner.
Pavel Pogrebnyak then found himself in acres of space and pretty much one on one with keeper but his shot went on the wrong side of the goal post.
Then just at the stroke of half time, Benjamin Kohler's cross from the left found found Primin Schwegler in the middle and the Swiss midfielder headed the ball back into the center for Ioannis Amanatidis to head home from close range. In the second half Eintracht were awarded a penalty but Hasmehian's shot was weak and fell straight into the hands of Pantilimon.
However it was a Pierre De Wit own goal that settled the tie when the midfielder failed to handle a cross from Cacau ending up putting the ball into the back of his own net.
