Great Britain won their second Gold medal on the trot for cricket, having successfully broken the final hoodoo that saw them win a succession of Silvers up to 1908. The United States were forced to settle for Silver once again, despite having a good part of the match in their control.

For most part of the match, only one player stood in the way of the British and victory. His name was King. John Barton King. The American legend finished the season with 127 runs at 42.33 and an astonishing haul of 11 wickets at 6.45. They were undoubtedly the best all-round figures ever seen in the Olympic Games. His career tally as of 1912 stands at 506 runs at 29.76 and 41 wickets at 15.29, from 21 matches between 1896 and 1912. During the 1912 final, he became the third player after Clem Hill and Victor Trumper to cross the 500-run mark in the Olympics, and quite easily the first to score more than 500 runs and also take more than 20 wickets in a career. If this was indeed his last appearance at the Olympic Games for the United States, no player will be missed more by any team.

The Australasians didn't give a quarter with the ball either. Warwick Armstrong finished the match off in style by running out two batsmen with his powerful throwing arm, and then came on to pick the last wicket all by himself. Also starring in Australasia's rout of South Africa was a little known legspinner from Wellington named Clarrie Grimmett, who provided glimpses of his rare talent with a very disciplined spell of 3/26 on Olympic debut to help his team claim a Bronze medal for cricket.

The 1912 Olympic Games (officially Games of the V Olympiad) are set to be hosted by Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. The authorities have invested a great deal in the Stockholms Olympiastadion to make it a playable venue for cricket matches, though the boundaries remain a great deal shorter than most proper cricketing venues around the world. The country of Sweden is finally ready to glimpse the game of cricket for the very first time.

A total of 12 nations have been confirmed as participants for the cricket tournament by the IOC, the highest team count for cricket in the Olympics till date. Every team to participate in cricket during the 1908 Olympic Games will continue to do so here, while one makes a comeback after nearly a decade and three others make their Olympic cricket debuts. They are (in alphabetical order):

There was initially talk of the host nation assembling together a cricket team of their own, but that never materialised. Neither did the long suggested return of the Mixed Team that played in both 1900 and 1904, but with disastrous results.

Also for the first time since cricket's introduction to the Olympic Games in 1896, the IOC will be using a single elimination/knockout format for the cricket tournament after taking a leaf out of football's book. Every match shall now have meaning and a single defeat means elimination from the tournament. Let the Games begin!

Summary

The 1912 Olympic Games, officially known as Games of the V Olympiad, were held in Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. As a result, the game of cricket reached Nordic shores possibly for the very first time. All the matches of the cricket tournament were played in the Stockholm Olympic Stadium (aka Stockholms Olympiastadion), which was built specifically for the 1912 Olympics.

A total of twelve nations participated in cricket, making it the most number of entries the sport had ever received in the Olympics till date. They were (in alphabetical order) Argentina, Australasia, Belgium, Burma, Canada, Egypt, Great Britain, India, Netherlands, South Africa, United States and the West Indies. India and Burma, alongside Japan who didn't participate in the sport of cricket, became the first Asian nations to participate in the modern Olympics.

A standard cup tie/knockout format was implemented for the cricket, following the footsteps of it's football counterparts. With a total of just 12 matches being played (including knockouts), this was the shortest cricket tournament to be held at the Olympics since 1896. The first round featured eight teams - Argentina, Belgium, Burma, Canada, Egypt, India, Netherlands and the West Indies; while the other four - Great Britain, United States, South Africa and Australasia were given a bye to the second round based on their performances in the cricket tournament held four years previously in the 1908 Olympics.

Debutants Burma and India impressed one and all by beating Argentina and Canada respectively to make it to the second round, while the Netherlands convincingly beat a West Indies team that seriously underperformed despite having many talented players to call upon. Egypt were controversially given the nod ahead of Belgium despite a tied match between the two, after the authorities chose to award the match to the team that had lost fewer wickets during their innings.

However, all the four teams that progressed to the second round were defeated by the four "Olympic cricket giants" in Great Britain, Australasia, South Africa and the United States. Burma were perhaps the only team that even came close to posing a noteworthy challenge against the four, as they sailed into the semi-finals with ease.

In the semi-finals, Great Britain defeated arch rivals Australasia to progress to the final, while the United States overcame South Africa in a thrilling last over finish. Australasia and South Africa then faced each other in a Bronze playoff that had to be rescheduled until after the final due to rain, which the Australasians won by a heavy margin of 96 runs.

Great Britain and the United States played each other in the final for the third time in the history of the Olympic Games. The former emerged victorious with Phil Mead hitting the last ball of the match for six. Great Britain won a Gold medal for cricket, just like they did against the same opponents in 1908, while the United States settled for Silver after once again failing to replicate their result in 1896 where they had won Gold against the same opponents. Bart King of the United States was named Player of the Tournament, a newly introduced award given to the best player as recognized by the tournament officials, for scoring 127 runs at 42.33 and taking an astonishing haul of 11 wickets at 6.45.

The end of the tournament saw several high profile cricketers who dominated the early editions of the modern Olympic Games, call time on their international careers. It was fun managing Australasia again. Will definitely do it again in the next edition, which would be in 1920, if I'm not wrong.
I think what we really lacked was a bowling spearhead.
