Battrick uses ASP.. which costs money. I suggest PHP which is less powerful but still can do the work with ease.

He said he's using JSP so he should be fine. Well the first thing you should do is make a UML diagram. Or even before that, you should make a list of all the objects in the game, be they users, teams, tournaments, etc.
