Zimbabwe v England A - 1st 50 over match - at Harare Sports Club, Harare - 1989/90 - Zimbabwe Innings

Toss:
Zimbabwe

Zimabwe won a Toss that didn't really matter and elected to bat first in the 1st 50 over match at Harare.
The home side struggled throughout their innings against tight England A bowling, losing 5 wickets to left arm spinner Richard Illingworth and part time offspinner Mark Ramprakash.
Illingworth took 3-19 off 10 accurate overs to stifle the middle order after the New Ball bowlers had made inroads and Zimbabwe were restricted to 142/9 off their 50 overs.

Zimbabwe make a couple of changes and England A elect to rotate their squad for the 2nd 50 over match, this time at Bulwayo Athletic Club, Bulawayo.
Phil Bainbridge comes into the England A side having toured Zimbabwe with an English Counties XI in 1984/5 and and is a former Wisden Cricketer of the Year while youngster Nadeem Shahid also gets a go.
England A are expected to be too strong again here but in home conditions a Zimbabwe win wouldn't surprise.

England A won the Toss and elected to bat first and were put in a strong position at 176/2 off 38 overs my Mark Ramprakash and captain Mark Nicholas.
Ramprakash made 83 off 97 balls with 6 fours and 1 six, while Nicholas made a solid 64 off 101 balls with 4 fours and 1 six.
The pair added 144 for the 2nd wicket before a collapse against medium fast bowler Kevin Duers saw them lost 38/7 in 12 overs to be all out for 214 off 50 overs.
Duers took an excellent 6-44 in 10 overs while chicken farmer Eddo Brandes took 3-37.
Needing a run rate of 4.3 per over Zimbabwe appear to have a decent chance, particularly if big hitter Dave Houghton fires, but England A will still be confident of a win.

Zimbabwe v England A - 2nd 50 over match - at Bulawayo Athletic Club, Bulawayo - 1989/90 - Zimbabwe Innings

Zimbabwe captain Dave Houghton made a run a ball half century to put his side in a decent position but the middle order stumbled against some good seam bowling.
Same late hitting by bowler Eddo Brandes kept Zimbabwe in the game but in the end a target of 12 runs off the final over by Dave Lawrence proved too difficult.
Fast bowler Lawrence took a wicket and conceded just 1 off the final 6 balls as England A won a tight game by 10 runs.
Alan Igglesden bowled well in his 1st game of the tour to take 3-33 off 10 overs but Man of the Match was England A Number 3 Mark Ramprakash who's 83 proved the difference.

We head back to Harare Sports Club, Harare, for the 3rd match of the 5 game 50 over series between Zimbabwe and England A with the visitors leading the series 2-0 and needing a win to wrap it up.
Both teams make changes, with Zimbabwe bringing in Darrel Goodwin to open, who is older brother of the more famous Test player Murray Goodwin.
The tourists captain again misses out, this time with a Back Strain, is he too old? Does he really want to play?
England A rotate their squad to give game time to their bowlers but on current form appear too strong here.

Toss:
Zimbabwe

After winning the Toss and batting first Zimbabwe were given a good start by keeper batsman Andy Flower who scored 68 after opening the innings.
A tight 4 wicket spell by John Afford put the skids under the home side and they eventually stuttered to a total of 162/9 off 50 overs.
Steve Watkin took 2 wickets and medium pacer John Stephenson was hard to get away but Afford was the star with 4-22 off 10 accurate overs.
England A now appear headed for a series win despite missing their captain Mark Nicholas for the 2nd time on Tour.

England A lead 5 match series 3-0

England A opener John Stephenson gave the chase a bright start with 60 and middle order batsman Graham Thorpe batted well for 40 as the visitors eased home by 5 wickets to wrap up the series.
There were also handy unbeaten innings from experienced allrounder Phil Bainbridge and keeper batsman Richard Blakey to see their side across the line after a minor wobble.
Veteran offspinner John Traicos continued to bowl accurately for Zimbabwe and picked up 3-32 off 10 overs but lacked penetrative support from the seamers on what was a pretty good pitch.
We now head back to Bulawayo with both teams expected to rotate their squad now the series is decided, England A in particular expected to make significant changes.

Pitch:
77 - Very much a "home" pitch prepared for the enjoyment of fast bowlers and the discomfort of batsmen.
This is a rock hard surface, promising a fast and high bounce.
Both runs and wickets are likely to come quickly and expect the top quality pace bowlers to reap a rich harvest.

The visitors face traditionally the weakest of the West Indies domestic teams, Windward Islands, in a 4 day match at Arnos Vale, Kingstown, St Vincent in the 2nd game of their tour.
England XI pick their fastest bowler Devon Malcolm here in the hope the pitch will offer him assistance and rotate their squad, Phil Newport retains his spot after a decent first game with selectors keen to assess him further.
The visitors appear too strong on paper here and should be favourites to achieve their 1st win.

Toss:

England XI won the Toss and with the pitch offering some Excessive Bounce early in the match and conditions Humid elected to bowl first.
The WIndward Island openers started well adding 54 but after Lance John was out for 48 only captain Dawnley Joseph 63 and experienced former Test bowler Winston Davis 43 offered much resistance.
Fast bowler Devon Malcolm and offspinner Eddie Hemmings enjoyed some favourable conditions to take 3 wickets each in a good England XI bowling performance that saw the home side all out for 213.

With the England X leading by just 5 at 220/9 and perennial number 11 Devon Malcolm new to the crease the match appeared evenly poised.
A fighting 99 run last wicket stand between allrounder David Capel and Malcolm gave the England XI what seemed a vital lead of 104.
Capel finished on the tourists highest score of the tour so far on 80* and Windward Islands now begin their 2nd innings needing to bat better than in the 1st.
The pitch remains Fast Paced for the start of the home side's innings with some Uneven Bounce expected on Day 4.

Windward Islands v England XI - 4 day match - at Arnos Vale, Kingstown, St Vincent - 1989/90 - Windward Islands 2nd Innings

Windward Islands opener Lance John made 71 to help wipe of the deficit before a century to Number 4 James Pierre gave his team a decent chance of pulling of a surprise win.
With the England XI bowling struggling to keep the runs down on a pitch that was mostly Fast Paced the home side managed to set a target of 209 in a little over 4 hours.
After being on top for the first half of the game the visitors find themselves with a tricky chase to register their 1st win.
Fast medium bowler Phil Newport was exceptional for England in taking 5-73 and the major reason England have a gettable target.
