How the happy thoughts do you hit the ball.

I was watching a CPU v CPU game, just too see what's possible, and the AI gets sixes in the first over! I saw what shots they were playing, so I'd thought I'd try it.

When I'm in the nets, the dude says I have excellent timing and all that crap, but when I actually play a game, I can't hit the ball. When the ball is pitched at your feet, you're supposed to play a down+X shot, but it just doesn't have enough power and goes straight to a fielder. If you add the power button, the ball goes straight into the air, every time. When the ball goes legside, you're supposed to do a right+circle shot, but without the power shot it goes straight to a fielder, but with the power button it's just spooned up and caught. Also, every time I try to play a cover drive (as the dude in the nets instructed) stumps go flying everywhere. Can someone kindly instruct me as to what the happy thoughts is going on?
