I think if Mendis had played a couple more series, he would have secured emerging player of the year. I think the other contenders are pretty tight, actually.

Mind you though He still has taken highest wickets in ODIs in 2008.
He has taken 33 wickets with an average of 10.81 in 13 matches. So stats are in favor of him.
Also Bracken nominates as best ODI bowler who has taken 31 wickets with an average of 18.16 in 18 matches and he is there after Mendis.
If you compare all the players from the category of Emerging player of the year then except Mendis nobody has better record in both form of the game.
So I think Stats just justify his selection and makes him favorite.
On interesting notes He has bowled in 3 Test Matches so far where He took 3 times four wickets,2 times 5 wickets so it is just amazing.

Typical, no NZers as usual. Vettori tops the OD bowling rankings and totally dominates every side for the whole year but typically we're forgotten. At least we're up for the Spirit of Cricket award. :)

Spirit of Cricket = New Zealand

They don't even care if they're loosing like most of the time, just enjoy playing.

Kallis? If the England tour coincides with the awards "year", then no.

Anyone seen the results yet? Go check them out if you haven't. Not really many surprises in there other than seeing Mahroof in the World ODI XI.

wouldn't really say that he is a surprise. His stats for 07 are good. In 22 matches he had 35 wickets, average of 20 and strike rate of 27. He also averaged 20 with the bat.

And Salman Butt made it over Gautam Gambhir to the World ODI XI (well as 12th man anyway)

Big surprise there.

Also Younus Khan in the ODI World XI? Eh, miracles do happen :p

Oh yeah, I didn't notice that. Just did now. That is a bit of a shocker. Gambhir being left out, that is.

Salman Butt from 8 Aug 2007:

Averages 56.94, S/R 87.04, scored 4 ODI 100s and 5 50s in this period

Gautam Gambhir from 8 Aug 2007:

Averaged 41.93, S/R 84.14, scored 3 ODI 100s and 8 50s.

So Salman did indeed end up with a higher average for this calendar year than Gambhir, which is why he went ahead.

Surprising result, I thought I had the numbers switched around for the batsmen.

Funny, because Salman was not a regular in the Pakistan team till the tour of India in November - December, and he lost his place in the ODI series v Zimbabwe in January due to 2-3 failures.
