ICC Awards

Gautam Gambhir played 36 ODIs, Salman Butt played 21 ODIs.

Although its not "not outs" that help Butt's average by much, he only has 2.

Just those 2 100s which really helped his average out.

Another unlikely thing I just noticed is Butt's career average is 39 while Gambhir's is 36.

I see a couple of guys have gotten it wrong :p, congratulations to West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, on winning the ICC 2008 Cricketer of the Year Award, the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, rather fitting, as a West Indian if you ask me, you have done us proud son, yourself, and the entire Caribbean as a matter of fact, enjoy the reign, and good luck for the future, lets hope you can maintain your game and form and be at the top for a long time :hpraise:happy:hpraise:hpraise:cheers

Gambhir left out is most unbeleivable thing, the whole thing is biased.

Anyone seen the results yet? Go check them out if you haven't. Not really many surprises in there other than seeing Mahroof in the World ODI XI.

How Maharoof gets in over Oram is beyond me. Whatever.

Yeh, I'd have Oram or even Flintoff in over Mahroof anyday. That looks a pretty weak ODi team to me, tails far too long, no Mendis or Broad either. Not happy with the ODi team tbh. Mitchell Johnson shouldn't be in there, and personally I'd go for Broad over Lee judging by this year's ODi performances, Broad's been brilliant this year. Johnson's crap, he's got pace and the left-arm angle, but Mendis would be a far better wicket taking option. Younis Khan shouldn't be in there either, don't rate him highly at all tbh, he does have a decent record though.

I'd have gone for:

Matthew Hayden
Brendan McCullum
Ricky Ponting
Kevin Pietersen
Andrew Symonds/Shiv Chanderpaul
MS Dhoni
Andrew Flintoff
Daniel Vettori
Stuart Broad
Ajantha Mendis
Nathan Bracken

Not sure who I'd go for as Wicket Keeper, but felt that both Dhoni and McCullum deserved a go into the team, especially Dhoni, and there aren't many ODi openers better than Brendan McCullum. Not 100% sure that Symonds should be in the team either, especially considering his woeful attitude in the past few weeks, but I suppose in terms of ODi talent, there aren't many better players than Roy, so he can have his place, with Chanderpaul coming in if Roy decides on another fishing trip.

There seems to be some fuss as to who should be in and who should be out of these teams, I guess everyone is entitled to his opinion, to each his own, however these selections are based on players performance over a 12 month period, ending in July (stand to be corrected) of the year in which the awards are given, so with all due respect to Flintoff, when did he get back in the fold of cricket?? I guess that was something that was taken into consideration.
And Broad over Lee in ODI, that is crazy in my book, and the record speaks for its self, Lee has a better SR batting, and a better SR taking wickets, much more pace, the kind of bowler you would want on an ODI 11, Lee over Broad for me anytime!

Gambhair made a ODI hundred against Australia in Australia whilst Butt made about 3 hundreds against Bangladesh.

Butt only had 2 100s v Bangladesh, the other 2 being vs India.

He also averaged more, which probably inched him ahead of Gambhir, and also had a better strike-rate.

Given that Flintoff didn't play one game in the voting period, I'd say that would be pretty unlikely.;)

Yeah good point. I'm sure he'll make it next time. He's started pretty well thus far.

I can understand Dhoni being picked as keeper. I can also understand McCullum not making it over some of the players who have scored lots of hundreds. I think Strike Rates should have been taken a bit more into consideration. I don't really know how they pick the sides. They're always flawed in some way. I can't remember ever totally agreeing with one, even putting my bias aside.

BTW well done to Simon Taufel , won the umpire of the year award for the 5th consecutive time. We need more umpires like him out there.

ps - Steve Bucknor pretty unlucky to miss out ;)
