The tragic stampede that claimed 11 lives is both heartbreaking and deeply unfortunate. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families affected. This loss of life was preventable and highlights a severe lapse in event management.
RCB’s title win after 17 long years was a historic achievement, but the organizers should have anticipated the massive turnout such a moment would draw. With a stadium capacity of only 35,000, the crowd reportedly swelled to nearly 200,000. Spreading limited police resources across multiple locations—HAL Airport, the team hotel, Vidhana Soudha for the Karnataka government's felicitation, and the victory parade to Chinnaswamy Stadium—left the main venue dangerously undersecured (reportedly where the stampede happened and death reported). The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) failed in its responsibility to ensure safety.
This is not our first major victory—we won the WPL in 2024, and RCB's Unbox event is hosted annually before the IPL season, without such tragic outcomes. The key difference this time was the limited preparation window due to international commitments and the urgency to organize the event before players departed for the WTC.
What should have been a day of celebration is now marked by sorrow. No trophy is worth more than a human life. Had we foreseen this, we would never have wanted the event to go ahead as it did, heck we didn't even want the trophy.
Continuing the event even after news of the stampede broke is an especially bitter pill to swallow. This tragedy will be remembered with shame—not just for RCB team, but for us as fans too.
