Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Let me first start off by saying that the names CSK and MSD are and will always remain synonymous as long as either exists. This day was going to come sooner or later- especially in the aftermath of his international retirement and fans would definitely dread the time when MSD hangs up his boots from CSK.

I had earlier made a comment about the 'timing' of this decision. If, as claimed, this was in the works earlier, MSD could have let Jadeja run the show in a few games last year. Jaddu is a novice when it comes to captaincy and may have the calibre, but should have been given a few chances. Personally, am not sure he's up to filling MSD's shoes and CSK may very well look for another option in a year or two. Now, if MSD new he was going to step aside this season, they could have built up the captaincy options last year itself.

To give it up a day before the tournament- especially in the year that most teams start afresh is a bit weird. The management could have sat down with the new captain and discussed on the structure of the team. This way it just seems as though MSD will remain in psuedo-charge of this team. The current team too has many defining characteristics of MSD. With a new captain at the helm, it is essential to break down the initially though out biases. Yes, there have been teams that have changed captains mid-way and it has worked. But remember, these guys left an indelible mark on their teams in the coming years- CSK shouldn't lose out on a year trying to get things right here.

Well no! From what many experts have pointed out, retention spot of the player makes a big difference in the purse that the franchise will have, for the next auction. Since Dhoni was retained as the 2nd player (which is 12 crores), when Dhoni calls it a day, CSK get 12 crores added to their purse. They can pay Ruturaj more than 6 crores even right now (that will be off the table and probably legal too), but from an IPL auction perspective, CSK will get a boost of 12 crores to their purse when Dhoni retires.

The point I was hopelessly trying to make is that Ruturaj would have fetched 10cr or more in the auction. The point I will try to make again is that their auction was not hindered by this because they got him for a steal and MS' value is his brain and keeping and Jadeja can learn a lot while he is still around.

On the subject of Ruturaj getting 12 from next year? I think contracts in sports always have get out clauses and all that nonsense. May be he only signed a 1 year deal? I don't know. We will see. At worst CSK will have 6cr added to their purse and best case 12cr. Perfectly timed for a Ben Stokes coup and then he will come and smoke the IPL which he has never done and we will sit on the same keyboard and call it the MSD effect even if he's at home petting his dogs for 3 months.

I dont think Ruturaj would've gone for 10cr. The auction dynamics have changed since 2008. People are no longer going by the halo effect (taking one series performance of a player). Rutu might have fetched at max 5-6 Cr given that his exploits lasted for a season only(so far). Multiple seasons on the same form might see him go for more-perhaps in a coupe of years time, if CSK choose to let him go.

On the subject of CSK's purse- Once MSD retires, they get 12cr added to the purse. I see this possibility happening next year/ middle of next year. Had they played at Chepauk, he would've called it a day. But knowing MSD, he isn't one to go by the traditional rules/ long for a farewell game. Expect this to be his last. The Ben Stoke coup- CSK might be vary of it- after that Andrew Flintoff failed experiment.

Would it run at the same time? Would love to see a Women's IPL game in the afternoon and Men's game in the evening.

They did not hold the token IPL exhibition tournament for womens teams also right with the covid excuse. Expecting BCCI to have such a tournament next year seems highly unlikely. They are too greedy to spend on such a tournament. Will find another excuse I am sure

Would rather want a Women's BBL like tournament that happens a month before the men's tournament.
Read somewhere that It may happen in later May, probably a month after the Men's IPL.

Current 3-4 Franchises are interested in buying teams and first preference will be given to existing ones only, It will be really exciting.

Looks someone wanted the Uttapam delivered at their home, so Uthappa left the crease early. :laughter:

I think RCB should be officially declared a pilgrimage for flop players. If someone from Indian team is not performing well, send them to RCB and after a season or two he is ready to be the next star.

New addition: Umesh Yadav
Previous Addition: Shane Watson, Mayank Agarwal, Sarfaraz Khan, Q. Dekock, Shemron Hetmyer, Moeen Ali, Marcus Stoinis, Avesh Khan, Moises Henriques and many more...
