Kent have refused to release their wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien to play for Ireland in the ICC Trophy. Middlesex granted releases for Ed Joyce and Eoin Morgan, and Northamptonshire released Andrew White, but Kent refused. Looks like Denmark could be without their only county cricketer Amjad Khan, also of Kent.

After Warwickshire's refusal to release Dougie Brown for a Scotland game last year (depsite not having a game), and South Australia's refusals to release John Davison for the ICC 6 Nations and Intercontinental Cup play offs, also last year, a non-test side is yet again denied the chance to select a full strength squad. Just imagine if Real Madrid told the English FA that David Beckham couldn't play in the World Cup qualifiers.

The ICC needs to step in and regulate in this area. How can the non-test teams develop if they are unable to pick their best teams?

That's really sad but I can understand the counties not sending their players away for ICC tournaments.

I may be a bit biased on this ;) , but what do you expect. Geraint Jones will not be available for Kent and there are twenty20 matches happening around the same time, do you expect Kent to be without both Wicketkeepers

Fair point, but this is an important tournament, with Ireland having their best chance ever of qualifying for the World Cup. As I said in the first post, just imagine if Real Madrid refused to release David Beckham to play for England in the world cup qualifiers. They'd be fined by FIFA.

It's a very difficult problem, the county season is very congested and I don't have a solution to offer, but I will say footballers sometimes seem to suffer from convienient injuries (England Squad going to USA for example).

I feel when it comes to playing for your country, the counties should have no right to refuse even if they are the employers. Its just wrong on principle.

That is different, the England football teams matches in the USA are just friendlies. These games for Ireland are anything but friendlies. They're important World Cup qualifying games. And if he is just released for the first round (as is Ed Joyce) he'd only miss 3 games for Kent.

Especially for important games like this. If Ireland were playing a few one day friendly games, it would be different.

Ok, good point, but if you want to compare with football, When International games are scheduled there is no play in the top line leagues affected by these international fixtures, so even if David Beckham was called up he would not miss any Madrid games, this is not the case with cricket.

Whilst I agree it is important players are able to represent there country, it is the county that pays the players. (If the player is centrally contracted by the country it is an entirely different matter of course)

Again being a Kent fan, i may be a bit biased, i can understand Kent, but also can understand what you mean in that it is an important game for Ireland ans i should think they need him!

JUst out of interest, does anyone know what O'Brian wants?

Don't think he would be likely to comment, probably has to take "The Company Line":D

I think most people would prefer to represent their country (In any sport) before their club, but sometimes you have to accept a wider view

In an interview on the ICU website before the season started he said he was looking forward to playing in the ICC Trophy. He hasn't commented since the squad was announced.

So you wouldn't mind if say, Glamorgan refused to release Ganguly to play for India?
See, the problem with people like John Davison or Niall O'Brein and other ICC Associate team members is that if they breach the contract with the county team they are representing then no other team would sign them later... In Ganguly's (or should I say Maharaja's) case even if Glamorgan wouldn't release him, he would care less and breach the contract and let go of the money and possible future opportunities for playing with English county teams.

I said it was sad because the players which are not being released by the counties have to go by the county's decision because playing for county is their way to earn their bread and butter... they can't risk breaching contracts how much ever they would love to take pride in playing for their home country.

Did you get my point??

Nobody wants to breech their contract, they just want a release to play for their country.
Well breach or being released... the players will obey the county's decision... becaus eif they don't their contract may not renewed. And that is really sad as these players are not able to replresent their home team.
