Smith, Grothe 'thrown out of pub'
Friday, August 18, 2006 - 12:02 PM

Parramatta rugby league halfback Tim Smith is at risk of being sacked by the NRL club after allegedly being thrown out of a pub for drunken behaviour.

Smith was warned by the club in June that he would be fined $10,000 and his contract would be in jeopardy if he was caught drinking again after several alcohol-related incidents.

Macquarie Radio has reported Smith was allegedly refused service and kicked out of a pub along with teammate Eric Grothe.

Smith was fined $1,000 by the club for a drunken scuffle with Test cricketer Michael Clarke at a pub in Cronulla in June and agreed not to drink for the rest of the season.

He had turned up to training affected by alcohol on May 15, the same day Brian Smith quit the club as coach.

Management from the Intersection Tavern at Ramsgate in Sydney's south confirmed to Macquarie radio there had been an incident.

The tavern said after one patron was refused service, another member of the group attempted to be served and the players were asked to leave.

In an email to Macquarie radio, an eyewitness claimed the players were "drunk beyond all belief".

The eyewitness said the players were swearing and Smith was spitting on the carpet.

When the players were refused service, Grothe allegedly started banging the walls until teammate Daniel Wagon, who was reportedly well behaved, escorted him out of the pub.

In June, Parramatta chief executive Denis Fitzgerald had called an alcohol summit with players after several incidents.

Winger Jarryd Hayne was fined $1000 in June after admitting he bit a woman on the arm while intoxicated at The Roxy nightclub in Parramatta.

Fitzgerald and the club's media spokesman were unavailable for comment.

If the Eels sack smith it Could be a good opening for the broncos. THey need a good halfback and might be able to buy smith to replace perry

He would be a dam good buy for whoever picks him up. We probably could throw some cash his way although we have quite a few halves.

Broncos beat the Doggies didn't see that coming and the Storm lost to the Warriors. Both teams weren't at their best especially the Storm throwing the ball around every chance possible. Dogs have major injury worries.

Looks like it won't be a Dogs/Storm final definitely after all.

Would of been naive to even think that before they lost over the weekend. Finals football all it ever takes is 1 bad game and you could be gone.

Yeah, you probably shouldn't write off anything, particularly when dealing with the current season.
My friend told me some Jersey Fleg Raiders halfback kicked a seventy-metre drop goal the other day....what!?!

Or maybe someone told you a lie? I find that very hard to believe. Remember the big deal made when Pat Richards started kicking 70 metre drop kicks, I very much doubt that a Jersey Flegg playing could make 70 metres let alone kick it accurately. It could happen though, but I very much doubt it.

I think we should take a more official vote on who we think the Grand Finalists will be and who will win the competition. I'm tipping a Storm vs Parramatta Grand Final (not being biased) and I reckon Storm will win.

But what about if it was a Eels vs Bulldogs or an Eels vs Manly final? The old rivals from the 70s and 80s, that would be awesome in my opinion, especially if Parra won.

Yeah, I've considered that, but it does seem a strange thing to bring up :p Anyway, you're right, it could happen, but I, too, doubt it.
Yeah, I'd love to see Parra win as well....would be a nice postscript to Brian Smith's never-to-be destiny ;)
I wish North's were still in Firsts, though.....I'm not from that area, but for some reason I used to like them in my very young years.

Cameron Smith kicked a drop out I think 60m on the fly. I know it was over halfway. Schifcofske kicked one around halfway but it was wide. But 70m would take some hell of a kick.

Anyway Raiders are finally being active in the market, Costigan is almost signed with us and we are chasing Dustin Cooper and Matt Bickerstaff.

Probably because you felt sorry for them because they hadn't won a premiership since the 20s. Norths had a good side with Jason Taylor, Billy Moore, Gary Larson and Greg Florimo. All good hard working players, pretty hard to not like Norths back in the day.

I'm a St.Helens fan but i enjoy watching St.George Illawara Dragons. Mark Gasnier, Trent Barrett and Ben Hornby are all quality players. Hopefull they'll win but i think that the Canterbury Bulldogs will win it with ease this year

With ease? Don't think so. Finals are never what are and in a matter of days they can change there gameplay.

Hmmm Doggies are looking far from invincible now. I wouldn't mind the Raiders finishing 7th and taking on them.
