Yea that is pretty irritating. But it also means you know how much damage your attacks are going to do, which is good if your collecting Pokemon, so you don't knock them out.

I've only caught 1 legendary so far (Dark Cresselia) and 1 high level Pokemon (Ivysaur Lv88). Keep searching....

Agreed, but the emphasis in Vortex is more on trying to actually 'Catch 'em all' because of this. The battles are a small portion of the game, mainly just for levelling up your pokemon. The gyms and elite four are just too easy and a waste, so that's where the challenge lies.

Most Pokemon do have different attacks though. There is a nice variety in attacks in Vortex.

Edit: Just accidentally killed a Ratticate and a Mystic Shaymin too, a legend!!!

I don't think many would consistently play Diamond since Black has superseded it and others.

V 1.8 was released today and it's awesome, so much more people to battle and the battles are so much more challenging. A massive step forwards for the game.
