Scotland struck immediately after the fielding restrictions were lifted. Gregor Maiden pitched a ball on leg stump, tempted Ganguly into a drive and bowled him off stump for a perfect spinners wicket:
He had played a fine innings and it was obviously a crucial wicket for Scotland. Sehwag continued his impressive display of hitting although he found it much harder against Hamilton and Wright and was lucky to survive this lbw shout:
It was Laxman who perished lbw instead to the impressive Maiden, mis-sweeping a full ball. No complaints about this one:
Despite this after 25 overs India remained in a very strong position, seemingly on course for 300+:
When English put down a simple catch at point to reprieve Singh Scotland might have felt it wasn't going to be their day. The re-introduction of Hoffman into the attack in tandem with Dougie Brown proved a catalyst though. Scotland slowed the Indian scoring rate and finally persuaded an impatient Virender Sehwag to hole out at midwicket just 6 short of his 100.
The Dougie Brown show then commenced. Brown was going at just 2 rpo and taking vital middle order wickets as well. Singh followed straight after Sehwag:
Followed by Kaif for 15 and Dravid for 9:
By the time the big hitting Dinesh Mongia became his 4th victem in the 48th over India were 255/6 and had blown a wonderful opportunity to bat Scotland out of the match.
Pathan's dismissal off the final over sealed a superb Scottish recovery from a dreadful position after 15 and 25 overs.
The slow scoring rate of the middle order and the loss of wickets at crucial times meant that India were unable to build on their excellent start:
Craig Wright did an excellent job of shuffling his bowlers, even utilising More's part-time offspin. Hoffman returned good figures after a terrible first three overs but the pick of the bowlers was Dougie Brown again well supported by Wright and Maiden who all restricted India late on:
The stats attest to a great Scottish comeback. Chasing 264 won't be easy but it's the Scots who will have their tails up going into their innings.
Scotland got off to a disastrous start when their talismatic opener Dougie Lockhart got a ball from Pathan first up that nipped back sharply and trapped him lbw:
More and Hamilton had a suprisingly easy time of it though not looking in any trouble and punishing the wayward Indian bowling which, despite a packed offside field, was mostly aimed down leg. Hamilton showed off with a beautiful array of hooks, pulls and glances:
He brought up his 50 off just 30 balls:
More too was cashing on the short deliveries. These two glanced off his hips for 4 and hooked over midwicket for 4 as well. He too brought up his 50:
India were putting a great effort in in the field but even a sprawling Ganguly couldn't reach this perfectly timed leg glance from Hamilton:
The introduction of Kumble had the same effect as the introduction of the Scottish spinner in the Indian innings bringing an immediate wicket. Hamilton disappointingly lobbing a simple catch to cover:
After 15 overs, Scotlands score was practically identical to what India's had been but with the loss of 2 wickets:
English and More will know they just need to preserve wickets and roll along at a steady pace without having to take any risks:
Kumble could yet have a big role to play in this final:
Statistically the teams are inseparable but India had a slump after the initial 15 overs which Scotland will be keen to avoid:
Tight and patient bowling from Ganguly and Khan brought about the third wicket. Robert More, top edging a slog sweep to square leg as he tried to break loose. It was the only aggressive shot he had played in the past 6 overs but it cost him his wicket:
Watson's aggresive nature was not to be curbed though. He drove 3 boundaries off Ganguly through the covers as the Indian Skipper consistently overpitched outside off stump:
At the other end though Cedric English was really struggling. The South African born player had yet to hit a boundary and was pushing the RR required up. After 30 overs a significant gap had opened between the Indian and Scottish scores with Scotland trailing:
Again it was Watson who stood up and took the situation in hand. A beautiful leg glance was the third boundary off a Kumble over and he brought up his 50 off just 52 balls:
