Six Wii Misconceptions

Misconceptions :correct fact

1. Wii is not really a console for epic titles: The Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem, Crystal Bearers, Heroes, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Super Mario Galaxy, Sword of Legendia?is that enough to begin with?

2. Wii is only a Party Console: How many party titles will there be? Monkey Ball, Rayman, Bomberman Land, Warioware, WiiPlay and WiiSports? Out of what, 100+ titles?

3. Wii is way too expensive: Not only does it have a 5-in-1 bundled game included that would probably be priced at around $39-49 at retail, but $250 for the Wii has always been known as ?the sweet spot? as it shows value to the console. The controller and nunchuk are an expensive piece of hardware and the Wii is loaded with many goodies from built-in flash memory to Wii Channels. For the first six months, you can also download a free Web Browser which may cost around $20-30 thereafter.

4. Wii is a repackaged Gamecube: The architecture may be the same but we don?t even know its theoretical performance. IGN specs clearly speak out on the Wii?s power being twice as much as the Gamecube. The Gamecube itself has over three times the theoretical performance of the PS2, and games like Okami and GOW2 look utterly beautiful on the PS2. To be fair let?s assume it was just a repackaged Gamecube, if you had a chance to upgrade the Gamecube to what a Wii is now what would the value be? Gamecube - $99, Wii-Mote + Nunchuk - $60, SD-Card Adapter - $15, 512MB SD Card - $25, Online Access (Adapter) - $35, Replacement Case (usually $40)? Two USB Adapters? Still it?s more than what the Wii will cost and you can?t upgrade the actual hardware either.

5. Wii will still be ?Kiddy?: PS3 and Xbox 360 will most likely have titles that are for kids, heck even the PS2 had a Barbie?s Horse Adventure game. But it is known already that Nintendo is dedicated into bringing Mature titles on the system. Disaster: Day of Crisis looks to be Nintendo?s first M-Rated title on the Wii and The Godfather, Mortal Kombat, Double Agent, Resident Evil: UC, Blitz and Sadness should be just some of the third-party M-Rated games on the Wii. Wii really is more of a social console and adults will be easily attracted to the Wii itself.

6. Wii doesn?t have strong third-party support like Gamecube: All the major third-party publishers are on-board for the Wii. Currently the count stands over seventy-five developers (in addition to several VC developers) and companies like Ubisoft are bringing 14 titles by March 2007. Clearly the Wii has stronger support than the Gamecube had during its launch.

A few days ago I saw a trailer for Madden 07 on the Wii and I have to say, I've never listened to an American so closely before! Although, I still think PS3 will be the top dog in the next-gen race.

The Wii is just a silly gimmick, if it thinks it can go toe-to-toe with Microsoft and Sony then it's sadly mistaken.

Like I said, it won't challenge PS3 or XBox 360 but it is a very innovative idea. The way it works with Madden is amazing, I was fixed on the video

The thing is Matt it isn't really trying to go toe-to-toe. It's aim is that for every person that has an Xbox360 or Ps3, they also have a Wii. It will either be a massive success or it will flop miserably. There really is no middle ground with something like the Wii.

Either the idea to change the way people play games is going to work, and the execution will be successful so people will jump at the chance to enjoy the fun offered.

Or, it will turn out well below par, and not deliver an enjoyable alternative, flopping more miserably than a Chumbawumba greatest hits album.

At the moment from what I've heard, it could well turn out to be a lot of fun. If that's the case, with games like Zelda Twilight Princess leading the way then it mostly needs the developers to produce games that utilise the new Wiimote well... mostly.

Purely in terms of specs and games, you may well be right, but how much does the thing cost? That surely will have a hugh negative impact on sales.

Trust me, gamers everywhere are saving up and waiting for the PS3. All this talk of unproven technology is ball sheet  BBC Morning News did a presentation of Blu Ray which is the HD enabling device in the PS3 and the results they found were astonishing.

I'm certainly not Culli. A lot of people are I believe quite keen to wait a few years until getting involved with a Ps3. Which is fair enough really, considering that there are still quality games being produced for the Ps2 like Okami, Yakuza, God Hand.

The thing with the Ps3 price is that they are aiming for the console to last 10 years. Considering the Xbox360 is likely to be replaced somewhere around half way to two thirds of the way into the Ps3s lifespan and that the online aspect is free with the console. Not to mention that it will get cheaper through the years because the more they produce they cheaper it becomes to produce. I think that it is safe to assume the Ps3 will end up the dominant console. Afterall the catalogue of games is likely to be massive considering you will have almost the entire back catalogue of Ps2 games.

Anyway, slightly off topic there, as this thread is about the Wi. Which with the way they are looking to market it, will not be affected by either console. As their aim is to be as a second console alongside one of the big two.

Nintendo were around well before Microsoft and Sony. Infact, they even started creating the Playstation with Sony, but then I think they broke off and made the N64 instead.

But I know that wasn't the point you were making (I just felt like showing off my Nintendo trivia ;) ). The key to Wii is that it is innovative. Its not a console where you plug a controller with a few buttons and knobs on it into the thing. Its like the DS, the DS was designed to be innovative, rather than play music and movies.

To correct you on that, the Playstation was the product that Sony made after their work with Nintendo to make a CD add-on for the SNES stopped because Nintendo thought that Sony was a little bit too keen in entering the console market and they saw how bad Sega failed with their CD add-on. Sony were going to be allowed to market their own all in one SNES with CD drive, which Nintendo finally realised wasn't a good idea. Sony took their work on the CD add on and used it to start the PSX project.

Thats what I meant to say :)

Thanks for that info though. You're backed up well by wikipedia (which I should have got info from in the first place)

Go the WII i dont see why people buy ps3/xbox360s. You are paying 600+ for a low specced PC when the same games are out on PC, upgrade your pc and buy a controller!. the wii will be amazing and will rival them on its price and originality!

Exactly! It is cheaper and well worth its value. PS3 has better graphics, but for that much money, it is definitely not worth it. Wii has good graphics, great gameplay, great games, and great ideas, which the PS3 is no competition against, at least IMO.

Nintendo Wii is stupid saw a vid of guys playing Madden looked so dumb!!!
