After more than a decade at the helm, Stephen Fleming has resigned the captaincy of New Zealand's one-day team in the wake of his team's defeat in the semi-final of the World Cup against Sri Lanka at Sabina Park. Fleming, 34, made the announcement at the post-match press conference

This was my last game as one-day captain, but I still want to captain the Test side," said Fleming, who has led the side to 98 wins and 106 defeats in his time at the top, including two World Cup semi-finals. He now intends to compete as a batsman only in the shortened form of the game.

"I've only just turned 34 and I think I've still got some good batting years ahead of me," he added. "So I want to concentrate on that for a while, and put a lot of energy into our Test cricket. In some ways your energy levels are sapped when you captain the side, and I want to play with a fresh mind, and finish off my career with some stats that I think I'm worth."

shame i regard him as the best captain in the world he does wonders with the limited quality players he has

well good to see he is still test captain but it is a shame that hes quit captaining odis.

so whoever is chosen as odi captain should be the next test captain who is his vice at the moment?

i think vettori was vice-captain so either him, scott styris or Brendon McCullum will get the captaincy i think.

Its a shame he is steping down, hes an amzaing leader.

Most likely Vettori. IIRC when Fleming was absent for a few games at home he took over the captaincy role. Shame Fleming is no longer captain as I rated him as the best of the lot going around. Intuitive thinking, aggressive tactics and consistently sets the appropriate fields for each batsman. But I do still feel he will still assist the next captain with some decisions in the field.

they need to give it a batsmen i dont like bowler captains to much to handle same with wicket keeper captains

Its good move from Fleming.. he has been the captain for 10 years... Its time to develope a young captain for Kiwis. I don't think Vetto is right choice.... Anyways lets see who comes in Fleming's position.

Also, without any doubts, in my opinion, Fleming has been the best captain... and all the good things has to end one day! It should be interesting to see how Fleming is going to play under a new skipper.. This reminds me the time when Azharuddin played under Sourav's captaincy.

An amazing leader, a shocking batsmen. He starts well sometimes then gets caught behind or at cover or bowler, malinga slinga bowled superb at him yesterday

Huge loss for NZ but if you look at his reasoning he's doing the best thing. Letting the new skipper get a go in ODI's with Fleming there to help, that new skipper, most likely Vettori can feed of Fleming and develop his skills, by the time that Fleming backs International cricket up all together, you'll have a ready made replacement.
