I know there's a contract, and AT & T subsidize it. And its not exactly installments, rather data plans.

I got my refurb 3G-S for $49+taxes over Black Friday, with a 2-year contract. This means that for 24 months, I have to pay $30 per month+taxes. That's $720++, which is quite a bit considering that for every iPhone AT&T activates, they pay Apple something like $500. It would be cheaper to buy it up-front, but you'd have to account for the opportunity cost of making that purchase.

Mehh. Couldn't care less whether it's not got a 70billion megapixel camera, Apple control the apps, or whatever. I've had my iPhone 3G a year and it remains the best phone I've ever used. The GUI is brilliant, it's magnificently styled, and does everything I need a phone to do. It works seamlessly with iTunes meaning you don't need extra software, which often, in my experience sucks (the Sony Ericsson and Nokia software I've used sucked) and it looks damn good. <3 the iPhone.
