Lions fight back but still behind after third day
Draw looks likely as home side avoid follow-on
Last Updated: April 23rd 17:39

A 72 by Gareth Batty was the highlight of a tense day three as Surrey did enough to avoid the follow-on, but a draw seems on the cards after a strong opening partnership sees Worcestershire up by 216 runs heading into the final day.

Chris Jordan joined Batty at the start of day two, and the pair set about trying to see their side to safety. Jordan didn't last long, but Tremlett and Batty added 70 runs in their partnership in an eighth wicket partnership, disrupted by rain for an hour before lunch, which was the most valuable of the innings. Tremlett was bowled by Matthew Mason and that brought about the end of the Surrey innings with Andre Nel following Batty, eventually out for 72, as Surrey closed on 301 all out, 83 runs behind.

In order for the home side to have any chance they would have had to get early wickets in order to turn the screw. This didn't happen though, as Vickram Solanki and Daryl Mitchell saw not only tea but the end of the game, both reached their half century and both will wake up tomorrow with the chance to convert that into a century tomorrow. Worcestershire close on 133 without loss.

Sussex meanwhile have further cemented their place at the top of the table with a comfortable five wicket victory over Gloucestershire in three days. Northamptonshire will have to take eight Middlesex wickets for less than 176 runs in order to win their game, having sent the Southern team back in to bat. Glamorgan need just 136 runs with six wickets left against Derbyshire; while in a University game Cambridge University drew with Leicestershire after three days.

Surrey v Worcestershire, Couty Championship D2

Afzall 50 Sees Surrey Safe
April 24, 2010

Worcestershire 384 (S. Choudhry 178, A. Nel 5-90) and 209-5 dec. (D. Mitchell 85, A. Nel 4-61) drew with Surrey 301 (G. Batty 72, Al Hasan 4-93) and 169-3 (Afzaal 53, Al Hasan 3-35)

usman_2499464.jpg

A solid half-century by Usman Afzaal saw Surrey to a draw on a final day in which there was little to play for.

Day four began with rain, and play was delayed for about an hour before play could get underway. When the covers were removed Andre Nel was determined to make most of the time. In his first over he first broke the opening partnership worth 137, trapping Vickram Solanki in front for69. Then, in the very next ball he dismissed danger man Shakib Al Hasan. Ben Smith avoided a Nel hat-trick but the South African was well on top.

The pair of opener Daryl Mitchell and Smith reached lunch together, and made a credible 40 before Mitchell was eventually given out leg before off the bowling of Chris Tremlett. Having made a huge score in the first innings, Shaaiq Choudhry lasted a meagre six deliveries before becoming Nel's fourth and final victim as Solanki declared on 209, 292 runs ahead and with about three hours of cricket left.

Surrey's openers Michael Brown and Afzaal stayed together up and beyond the tea break, but eventually the former was trapped lbw by Al Hasan. The bowler must have been irked by his poor performance with the bat, catching and bowling Afzaal a few balls after the opener had made a half-century.

The draw was never in doubt, and it was all about bonus points as Rory Hamilton-Brown and Mark Ramprakash took Surrey to the brink of 150 before Ramprakash became Al Hasan's latest victim, caught at short leg by Solanki.

That left Gary Wilson a few overs to bat out which he did, Surrey getting as far as 169-3 before the game came to a close. Shaaiq Choudhry was given the Man of the Match award for his brilliant 178 in the first innings; Worcestershire come away with nine points to take them off the bottom, Surrey just the seven, the same amount ahead of the Royals in the table.

Meanwhile Middlesex earned a hard fought draw against Northamptonshire, while in an incredible game at the SWALEC Stadium saw Glamorgan win by one wicket after heroic performances by Mark Cosgrove and Robert Croft. For these two sides games against Lancashire (Surrey) and Sussex (Worcestershire) the day after next in the opening day of the CB40

The Lancashire Lightning eased to a comfortable victory against Surrey in their Clydesdale Bank Pro40 Group A game at Old Trafford earlier. Mark Chilton scored 60 as a highlight while one good moment for Surrey was Jade Dernbach's four wickets, though Surrey's slow batting left Lancs an easy total.

Well Watched: Steven Moore smacks one to the boundary
_______________________________________________________________________________
Despite Michael Brown and Usman Afzaal steering Surrey in the right direction, taking the Division two outfit to 72-0. Despite consistant scoring down the order; Younis Khan (35), Mark Ramprakash (30), and Steve Davies (35), the Lions couldn't keep up with the required strike rate and ended on 199-5

The Lightning made easy work of chasing down the total, Chilton and opening Paul Horton took the Northern side to almost 100 before Horton was bowled by Jade Dernbach. As a matter of fact Dernbach took all four Lightning wickets, first Steven Moore (13), then Chilton eventually for 60, before trapping Steven Croft on a first ball duck.

That was the only slight difficulty as the Division One outfit as they chased down the runs with 10 overs to spare. Despite the loss, Jade Dernbach's figures of 4-36 won him the Man of the Match award which will be of little comfort to himself or his team-mates, who have yet to win a game./INDENT]

Ryan Sidebottom and James Anderson are the only two pure bowlers, with six all-rounders in the side. Captain Collingwood and Mascarenhas are joined by Graeme Swann, Tim Bresnan, Luke Wright, and James Tredwell while Craig Kieswetter will wear the gloves.

The full squad is as follows:
Michael Lumb, Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan, Ravi Bopara, Michael Yardy, Craig Kieswetter (wk), Paul Collingwood (c), Graeme Swann, Tim Bresnan, Luke Wright, James Tredwell, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Stuart Broad, Ryan Sidebottom, James Anderson
