The FM Elimination Challenge (June 2026)

Everton you fcking legends! Amazing luck that I finally started playing right when I was about to be gone

June, 2015
The playing field has been halved

Originally there were 12 budding young players, all wanting to get their shot to become the winner of the FM Elimination Challenge. However, six years on, the original playing field has been halved.

MaD's loan move to Wigan was in the end his downfall. He played for the majority of the season in the Championship and didn't earn anywhere near enough points to survive in the competition. In the end he finished with 771.75 points, becoming the sixth member of the challenge to be eliminated, with a gap of over 60 points separating him from the next nearest competitor.

Meanwhile, the battle at the top takes an incredible twist and right now nobody has any idea who could end up winning this competition. Also, after the conclusion of this year and when the date is June 2016, each elimination deadline will be extended to 2 years each for the five remaining competitors. When there are just three players left, the next elimination will last for 3 years and the final will be extended for 4 years. This means the FM Elimination Challenge will come to a conclusion on the 1st of June, 2027, with the final competitors aged 34.

But for now, the strikers are still budding young players who have plenty of time to make a huge mark on the world and it should be very interesting to see how this pans out. Attribute declination could bring a huge factor into this game late into the challenge... so who can remain at the top for the longest?

Let's have a look at the six remaining competitors.

Mattfb (GK, Italy)
Club: Everton
League: English Premier League
Player Profile

Matt was looking like he would almost be certainly heading home at January, 2014 but his superb comeback has continued and he made 33 league appearances out of a possible 38 for Everton this year in the Premiership. He looks to be a reliable goalkeeper and had quite a solid record for them, conceding on average a single goal per game. He still hasn't made his debut for Italy, but surely it can't be too long before he peaks and finds a place in the international team.

Points: 884.97

Nakul (ST, Spain)
Club: Valladolid
League: Liga BBVA
Player Profile

Valladolid yet again managed to hold on in the Liga BBVA to survive for another season, keeping Nakul earning top points. He will surely be in strife if they ever get relegated, but for now he is doing his part, and it was another good year for him with 20 goals in 38 appearances for Valladolid. Still, he has hardly been electrifying - nor has he made his international debut for Spain. He might not want to leave his run too late - the top three are starting to gain on the rest of the group with some fantastic performances.

Points: 960.60

Hedger (ST, Sweden)
Club: Juventus
League: Serie A
Player Profile

It was another excellent year for Juventus as they finished in 2nd position behind only Inter, but disaster struck Hedger as he broke his ankle which kept him out for three months - the last thing that he needed. As well as that, he struggled when returning to the league and finished with a poor record of 9 goals in 25 league appearances. Fortunately he was better in cups and in Europe, scoring 7 goals from 6 continental matches and 2 goals from 2 cup matches to keep himself in faith with the Juventus manager.

Points: 1203.94

Ollie H (MC, England)
Club: Manchester City
League: English Premier League
Player Profile

Ollie put his earlier injury aside and became a first-team regular once more for Manchester City, where he seems to have established a permanent base. He had a fantastic season in the league, playing 32 matches with an average rating of 7.42. Despite this, City had an average season, finishing in the higher mid-table but nowhere near the top 4. However, Ollie continues to put the pressure on and has emerged as a serious contender to win the competition, although only if he continues playing so well. Ollie is also the top earner in the competition with his contract earning him $11M AUD per year. Interestingly enough, he has been joined at City by ex-competitor The Spin, who thought it in his best interests to leave Genoa.

Points: 1203.06

Maney2k9 (ST/ML, Ireland)
Club: Wolfsburg
League: German Bundesliga
Player Profile

It wasn't the best season possible for Maney, who didn't get as much game-time as he ultimately needed. Now there is the big pressure of elimination on him, as he sits in last position by almost 50 points. He will need a big season for VfL Wolfsburg in 2015/16 if he is to stay in this competition - but it is definitely not impossible, as shown by Matt as he pulled off a superb comeback to knock out Giggity Giggity. He didn't receive any real injuries of note but only played in 19 league matches out of a possible 34 for the year.

Points: 835.7

Shantanu Rooney (ST, England)
Club: R. Madrid
League: Liga BBVA
Player Profile

Shantanu Rooney is suddenly the man to beat. He is in scintillating form and has suddenly emerged to knock off both Hedger and Ollie to take first position. It was a fantastic season for him in the league, as he scored an amazing 30 goals from 36 appearances to take out the Liga BBVA Golden Boot award, and he also won the Champions League Golden Boot after scoring 12 goals from as many matches in Europe. His value is now also at an amazing $60M AUD, making him the 9th most expensive footballer in the world. He is earning $9M AUD per year for his services at Real Madrid, and he has been a revelation for them, undoubtedly.

Wow, me and Hedger split by .8 of a point and it's really starting to hot up. Shantanu seems to have come from no where! And is now the main threat. But don't worry. I'm coming.

How you guys enjoying this so far?

I also have plans of doing an FM Mini-Elimination Challenge. And then, after that, a sequel to this FM Elimination Challenge. I have the ideas ready... and it should get interesting after this.

But of course, we have this one to attend to first... and the heat is turning up. ;)

I love the fact that the deadlines are now extending and people will be able to play out a career. I eagerly await an update every time, like now I can't wait until you do the January update! This is going great guns.

That's good to hear you enjoy it... and currently it's holidayed up to mid December, 2015, so you can expect another update in an hour or so... ;)

Did you ever tell us how points are scored? I know that you have your own little equation but did you ever say how it worked?

Did you ever tell us how points are scored? I know that you have your own little equation but did you ever say how it worked?

I'm using a Microsoft Excel booklet to do it. Originally I was going to have it far more complicated but it's actually fairly simple.

I'll explain it fairly roughly..

Basically, there are a number of factors that decide score. I have given a set score value to each league based on its competitive level. For example, the English Premier League gives 4.75 points per game played and 1.9 points per non competitive game played. So, if you are at a club in the EPL and you are playing reserves/non competitive you will still get 1.9, no matter who it is against. La Liga is worth 4.5 points and 1.8, while the Championship was worth 3 and 1.2.

Each country is also scored as well, based on reputation and ranking. For example, a senior game for England is worth 13.6 points while a youth game is worth 6.8 points. A senior game for Sweden is only worth 9.92 points in comparison.

Then there are also MOTM awards. If someone is awarded a MOTM, they get a bonus of 2x the league. So, for example in the Premier League where playing a game is worth 4.75 points, somebody would earn 4.75 + 9.5 for being MOTM. You also only get half points if you appear as a substitute.

Being in a Best Eleven earns you 5 * the league value. Again, using the Premier League, that is 4.75 * 5 = 23.75 points. Appearing as a sub in the Best Eleven is worth half this.

So, that's all there is to it really. Youth caps are also worth points. Pretty simple when it comes down to it, and I have nice little formulas that do it all for me. :p

January, 2016
Happy 23rd birthday

It was an interesting period from June to January. Maney2k9's career was on the line and he knew it, so in a bold move he requested a transfer and was sold to fellow Bundesliga battlers Dortmund in a deal worth $17.25M. Still, he will need a miracle to save him after he failed to add many international caps under his belt.

There were no other transfers, but Nakul is currently unsettled at Valladolid and after six and a half years of service, 154 matches and 68 goals, it seems like the time might be finally right for him to move on. He is slowly starting to slide and Mattfb is suddenly only 25 points away from him, with the gap shrinking increasingly smaller.

At the top of the table there has been a big move after a fantastic international season and a great start to the domestic season has seen the Holdenator finally overtake Hedger and even Shantanu and pull ahead into first place. Ollie made 7 appearances for England since last June and he has played every single league game so far for Manchester City, coming off the bench in only one of them. Shantanu is still very close though, while a poor international and domestic start for Hedger has seen him fall off the pace. The former leader suddenly looks lost at Juventus. Can he revive himself?

But the real question is, can Maney pull off a miracle and survive? What will he need to do it - international caps, injuries to his nearest competitors, MOTM awards and perhaps something else to keep him going. It's going to be a tough haul for the Irishman.

Mattfb (GK, Italy)
Club: Everton
League: English Premier League
Player Profile

The level-headed Italian has kept in every single league game for Everton this season and although a new 19 year old goalkeeper has arrived from Manchester City it seems that he will hold on to his spot unless the other goalkeeper makes dramatic improvements. One thing missing from Matt's resume however, is a senior cap for Italy. He has now racked up 21 youth caps for his country but 33 year old Marco Amelia is holding him out, while he sits on the bench. Gianluigi Buffon is now third choice keeper but at the age of 37 has no future.

Nakul (ST, Spain)
Club: Valladolid
League: Liga BBVA
Player Profile

A quiet half-season for the media friendly Spaniard was not at all what he needed, as suddenly the large gap that he held over Matt has been demolished. Nakul himself is unsettled at Valladolid and is considering his options, but it is believed he is considered indispensable at Valladolid and they will not want to sell him. He is another who has failed to play internationally, and despite having 17 youth caps and 17 youth goals for Spain he is yet to be called up. 31 year old Fernando Torres is currently occupying the lone striker position and there seems no likelyhood of that changing any time soon.

Hedger (ST, Sweden)
Club: Juventus
League: Serie A
Player Profile

The unflappable Swede would have to be disappointed after he slipped well down to third position and a fair way behind Ollie and Shantanu. After leading for such a long time, he failed to make a mark internationally over the half-season with the two striker positions being taken by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and, surprisingly enough, another 23 year old by the name of John Guidetti, who appears to have nowhere near the amount of ability as Hedger. He will be definitely frustrated after a limited amount of appearances for Sweden as well as time at Juventus has slowed his campaign down and dropped him well into third.

Ollie H (MC, England)
Club: Manchester City
League: English Premier League
Player Profile

The reserved English midfielder keeps on getting better and better as he mows down the competition with some fantastic displays. He made 7 appearances for the England team over the half-season, clearly impressing manager Stuart Pearce. He was also in fine form once more for City, playing in all possible league games with an average rating of 7.53, and he is now perhaps City's best player. Can he keep this fantastic form up? He'll certainly be hoping so, for his sake. January 2016 marks the first time that Ollie has taken the lead in the competition - he definitely hasn't made his charge too early. Where will he be come next June, however?

Maney2k9 (ST/ML, Ireland)
Club: Dortmund
League: German Bundesliga
Player Profile

A club move for the level-headed Irishman in Maney2k9 seems to have done little in relation to his score. He is making more appearances for Dortmund than he did at Wolfsburg, but with Matt playing every single league game for Everton in the Premier League his nearest hope was suddenly dashed. He will need nothing short of a miracle to get him out of this mess, and it seems highly unlikely that he will be able to avoid relegation. Then again, stranger things have happened - but not in this competition...

Shantanu Rooney (ST, England)
Club: R. Madrid
League: Liga BBVA
Player Profile

Just after taking the lead for the first time, evasive Englishman Shantanu Rooney has been knocked off the top by Ollie Holden but he still remains right in the mix and well clear of Hedger in third position. His form continues to be fantastic, and he has scored 17 goals in 25 games in Real Madrid's campaign this season. They currently sit in 1st in the league and it is surely no coincidence that Shantanu has been in top form. Meanwhile, his value has raised further to a staggering $66M AUD. His maturity is also showing at Real Madrid, and he has been tutoring 18 year old Argentinian Maximiliano Matos. On an unrelated note, hopefully Matos won't end up knocking him off his perch because his stats look very handy for the age of 18 and he has scored a freakish 31 goals in 16 matches for the youth team, with an amazing 12 MOTM from those games...

Thinking about it, this Summer and the 2018 summer could make or break the competition in terms of the Euro Championships and the World Cup!

Ah, that's a shame. I had a good run though. Next time treva demands an update on his progress, can you check mine too please?
