The FM Elimination Challenge (June 2026)

Cheers for the update Blake. Nice to see I'm destroying strikers in England. Is that why Shan and Hedger are keeping away from the Premiership? :p

Competition looks to be a two horse race unless Hedger can have a monster coupl of seasons at Juve.

Could I get an update please? I wonder how I am doing for City and Switzerland!

I've only just noticed this story and I've got to say it's a brilliant idea Blake. Quite an interesting battle between the top 2 has developed and the bottom 2 are fighting for their lives still. Very interesting and I look forward to some more updates! :)

June, 2018
Remaining players: 4

Different style of update. I kind of prefer this way in that I just do a write-up and then don't worry about doing the players individual write-up section. Since there is only four players this will hopefully be alright. Any problems with this? I will try and make the writeups more detailed as time goes by.

Nakul needed an excellent year at Valladolid, but after breaking his leg in early September he never had a chance. He was out of action for five months, and when every single point is vital this was a huge dent to his hopes. In the end he was eliminated without ever playing a senior international match which is something that he must be very disappointed about. He finished on 1424.19 points, after barely gaining anything at all due to his broken leg. Nakul has been eliminated from this competition and now there are just four players left.

It was an eventful year for Mattfb, who made 8 appearances for Italy between the posts. He continued to release statements saying to the media that he feels it is time to leave Everton and move on to a bigger club. It seems like this is what he might need - a lack of continental and cup matches is now ensuring that he struggles to gain on the competition. He has managed to hold off Nakul comfortably to survive, but now he only has two years to sort it out as he trails Hedger by a long way. He rejected Everton's latest contract but it will only expire in June of 2019 so he still has another year left to play.

Meanwhile, Shantanu Rooney finished narrowly behind Hulk as the Liga BBVA Top Goalscorer after he had another excellent season, scoring 22 times from 32 matches in the league. He also had a superb year for England, making a few appearances and after January this year he has scored 5 times in just 3 matches for England, taking his tally to 23 caps / 22 goals. Sir Bobby Charlton remains the all time top goalscorer with 49 goals for England, but it seems that Shantanu may have a chance of taking down this record if he continues to play well.

Hedger had a solid season for Juventus and Sweden as he scored 22 goals in 39 appearances and he continued to score at a rate of a goal per game at international level. He first made his international debut in 2010/11 and since then Sweden have risen 7 places to 29th in the international scene. Hedger now has 44 caps and 35 goals for England, but is still 20 goals away from the record which was broken by Zlatan Ibrahimovic before he retired and went into management, with 102 caps and 55 goals to his name. Hedger still has a solid lead over Matt and looks safe at least for this elimination... but Matt has already made two last-ditch come from behind efforts to earn himself survival; one against Giggity Giggity earlier in the challenge and then, of course he only recently overtook Nakul before pulling ahead of him comfortably in time for elimination.

And finally, Ollie also had an excellent year at City alongside ex-competitors Covvy and The Spin. City performed well in the league, in the end finishing in 2nd position only narrowly behind United, who won it for the first time since 2011. Ollie made 49 appearances for City as well as performing admirably for his country, and he performed wonderfully with an overall average rating of above 7.5 and an average of 7.93 on the international scene. He was again shortlisted for the World Footballer of the Year but the award was won for the sixth time by Lionel Messi. Can Ollie catch Shantanu?

Four players remain. Who will remain standing tall, and who will falter under pressure? We will visit next at June 2019, and then at June 2020 for our next elimination.

Whos Ibrahimovic managing now? And another alright season for me but I still am well behind the top 2 but hopefully I can hold off matt until 2020.

Ibrahimovic is unemployed, but he has some quite good stats. Would probably make a better coach than manager though, judging from his staff attributes.

Has only just retired... moved to Everton in 2016/17 on a free but only made 2 senior appearances before retiring.

Hopefully he becomes Sweden's coach and coaches me so well that I totally dominate over the next few years and win The FM Elimination Challenge.

Hedger, you need SR and Ollie, both to get injured for you to realistically catch up with them :p

Actually, I think it is fair that I explain a bit more about this world. So, I will list the current top 20 players in the world as of 31 March, 2010 from the Castrol Rankings and describe where and how they are playing/coaching/managing currently, or if they are retired.

Then, I will give an insight on to the top 20 players of the new world, as of July 2018 so you can meet some of the new global stars...

Old World 20

1. Lionel Messi
Age: 31
Role: Player
Club: Barcelona

After joining Barcelona as a 13 year old in 2000, Messi is still going strong 18 years later at the club that he loves. He is probably a fraction past his peak but managed to win World Footballer of the Year in 2017 for a record sixth time. He has 86 caps for Argentina and has scored 30 goals, and has an average rating of over 8.1 for every single year since 2010.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo
Age: 33
Role: Player
Club: Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo also remains at Real Madrid, and is still a key player for them. He has made a staggering 131 appearances for Portugal with 57 goals and has played in a total of 403 competitive games for Real Madrid. He last won the World Footballer of the Year in 2015 although it seems unlikely that he will win it again.

3. Wayne Rooney
Age: 32
Role: Player
Club: Manchester United

Rooney was an integral part of the Premier League winning squad in 2017/18 for Manchester United and he has remained loyal to his club since joining from Everton in the 2004/05 season. He has made a whopping 501 appearances for United, scoring 268 goals in the process and is undoubtedly one of the club legends.

4. Gonzalo Higuan
Age: 30
Role: Player
Club: Aston Villa

Higuan moved from Real Madrid to Aston Villa a few years ago in a deal worth around $47M AUD. He has been shortlisted for World Footballer of the Year on five occasions but has never finished in the top 3. He had perhaps his best ever season last year, scoring 34 goals in 43 appearances for Villa and he is still an excellent player.

5. Fernando Torres
Age: 34
Role: Player
Club: Liverpool

Torres has remained at Liverpool although he isn't getting quite as much game-time as he used to, playing just the 19 league games last year - although, he still scored a considerable 11 goals in those games. He has a fantastic international record with 101 caps and 44 goals for Spain, but he isn't quite as quick as he used to be anymore.

6. Didier Drogba
Age: 40
Role: Manager
Nation: Ivory Coast

After retiring from football in 2013/14 following a move to Olympiakos, Drogba decided to switch his hand to managing and, since being appointed as the national manager of Ivory Coast he has guided them from a ranking in the mid-50s to suddenly 22nd in the world. He has been fantastic since being appointed in February 2016.

7. David Villa
Age: 36
Role: Player
Club: Valencia

He is still the Valencia captain although he has decided to retire in May, 2019 following a long and successful career. He has scored 50 international goals for Spain and exactly 200 league goals for Valencia over the years.

8. Gerard Piqu
Age: 31
Role: Player
Club: Barcelona

The best defender in the world as of March, 2010 is still going strong at Barcelona, following a superb year in which he made 47 appearances at an average rating of 7.46. He has made 79 appearances for Spain and has remained a fantastic player over the years, with a few more seasons still to come from him.

9. Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Age: 36
Role: Manager
Club: N/A

Following an unsuccessful move to Everton, Ibrahimovic decided to retire in the hope of becoming a successful manager. However, despite some impressive stats he remains unemployed and it will be interesting to see where he moves for his first job.

10. Arjen Robben
Age: 34
Role: Player
Club: FC Bayern

Robben is still at Bayern, although after making just 7 appearances last year it must seem that his time is up there. He still has some impressive technical stats but his physical stats have declined a lot over the years and he has decided not to remain in football once he ends his career.

11. Frank Lampard
Age: 40
Role: Youth Coach
Club: Celtic

Lampard was released by Chelsea at the age of 35 but that didn't stop him, as he moved to Hertha BSC for a year before finishing his career at Portsmouth with two good years in the Championship before retiring at the age of 38, having led Portsmouth to promotion into the Premier League. He decided to become a youth coach, and is currently employed at Celtic with no other plans just yet.

12. Florent Malouda
Age: 38
Role: Manager
Club: La Berrichonne

Malouda moved to OM in late 2010 before leaving less than a year later to play at Lyon. He had three years there before deciding to retire as a player. Less than a month after his retirement, he was snapped up by Anderlecht as a coach but after 15 months of service he decided to try his hand as a manager and took over French Ligue 2 battlers La Berrichonne in October, 2015. He has been a brilliant manager, guiding them from relegation prospects in Ligue 2 to promotion and in 2018/19 his team will compete in Ligue 1 for the first time in 20 years.

13. Claudio Pizarro
Retired

14. Carles Puyol
Age: 40
Role: Youth Coach
Club: Racing

An ex-centre back at Barcelona, Puyol is now a youth coach at Racing after he retired from football at the end of the 2013/14 season. He was first signed by his old club Barcelona as a youth coach but after less than a year and a half of service he moved to Racing, where he is currently working as a solid youth coach.

15. Edwin van der Sar
Age: 47
Role: Chairman
Club: Unio Desportiva de Leiria - SAD

After retiring from football as an extremely successful goalkeeper following a long career, van der Sar decided to make an interesting move and became the chairman of Leiria, a Portuguese team competing in the Liga Sagres. He supposedly loves the club and it seems he is going fine there.

16. Daniel Alves
Age: 35
Role: Assistant Manager
Club: N/A

Alves had a fantastic career before finally deciding to call it a day, retiring only 4 days ago on the 30th of June, 2018 (it is currently the 4th of July, '18). He has decided to go down the path of becoming an assistant manager - perhaps as experience before he manages his own club, but surely it won't be long before he gets snapped up.

17. Ivica Olic
Age: 38
Role: Manager
Club: Metalist

Pacy striker Ivica Olic was released from Bayern in the 2012/13 season, and he was promptly signed by the Italian club Atalanta. He had one good year with them, scoring 10 times in 24 matches but he failed to break into their senior team after that and decided to retire from football after his physical stats dropped away. He first became a coach at Ukrainian team Shakhtar and after 16 months of solid service he decided to leave after Metalist offered him a job as their manager. Since joining, he has guided them to 9th two years in a row and has not been the most successful manager.

18. Jermain Defoe
Age: 35
Role: Manager
Club: Cardiff

Defoe spent the rest of his career at Tottenham before he retired from football altogether at the end of June 2016. A few weeks later he took up the vacant assistant manager post at Bolton, where he gained some experience before he decided to take on League 1 Cardiff towards the end of November, 2017. It wasn't a great year for him though, as Cardiff spiralled towards the bottom of the ladder, finishing dead last. That said, they are in serious debt and have just seven first team players, and another poor year might await them.

19. Edin Dzeko
Age: 32
Role: Player
Club: FC Bayern

Tall target-man Dzeko is still going strong in Germany as a player following a move from Wolfsburg to FC Bayern as they sought for a replacement striker following the loss of Olic. Dzeko is still one of the best target men in the world and is Bosnia and Herzegovina's all time record goalscorer with 44 goals from 66 caps.

20. Hugo Lloris
Age: 31
Role: Player
Club: Olympique Lyonnais

French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is one of the world's best goalkeepers today and still manages to rake in the awards, with seven Ligue 1 Star Goalkeeper awards under his belt at Lyon. He has plenty of years left in him as a goalkeeper and with 94 caps for France he is an international star.

Good to get some games for Italy! If I can play in the WC and we can win it I'll be right back up there. Also need to move clubs dammit!

GK: Mattfb (Everton)

DL: Lima (Roma)
DC: Xabier Navarro (Barcelona)
DC: Cristi?n Zapata (AC Milan)
DR: Georgian Dumitriu (Tottenham)

ML: Diego Buonanotte (Genoa)
MC: Joe Carter (Manchester United)
MC: Josh Taylor (Arsenal)
MR: Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

ST: Sergio Ag?ero (Atletico Madrid)
ST: Hedger (Juventus)

1. Lionel Messi
Age: 31
Position: AM RLC
Team: Barcelona
Country: Argentina

After joining Barcelona as a 13 year old in 2000, Messi is still going strong 18 years later at the club that he loves. He is probably a fraction past his peak but managed to win World Footballer of the Year in 2017 for a record sixth time. He has 86 caps for Argentina and has scored 30 goals, and has an average rating of over 8.1 for every single year since 2010.

2. Sergio Ag?ero
Age: 30
Position: AM/FC
Team: Atletico Madrid
Country: Argentina

Atletico's goalscoring beast is one of the world's best players now and is a dominant force for Atletico as well as Argentina. Since 2010, he has scored 206 competitive goals for Atletico from 358 appearances and was named World Footballer of the Year in 2012 and 2013, as well as runner-up numerous times with the latest runner-up award coming just in 2017.

3. Joe Carter
Age: 24
Position: DM, MC
Team: Manchester United
Country: England

Born in September 1993, Joe Carter is one of England's new stars and after beginning his career at Stoke before moving to PSV, he has finally signed for Manchester United to further improve his training and experience in a deal worth $74M. In his debut season at United he was one of the players who took them to the title, as he played all 38 league games with an average rating of 7.56. He has 22 caps for England.

4. Josh Taylor
Age: 21
Position: AMC
Team: Arsenal
Country: England

The English 21 year old midfielder has shot to fame quickly and already has made 15 appearances for England. He came through the Arsenal youth ranks, and after seasons on loan at Oldham and Scunthorpe he finally found his way into the first team and from there he has performed brilliantly. His best year was in 2016/17 as a 20 year old when he scored 6 goals and added 14 assists in 41 starts for Arsenal, at an average rating of 7.72. In 2016/17 he finished in third place as the English Footballer of the Year.

5. Diego Buonanotte
Age: 30
Position: AM LC
Team: Genoa
Country: Argentina

After moving from River Plate to Wolves in 2010, he soon moved once more on a $41M deal - this time to Genoa, where has stayed. Buonanotte is a fantastic winger and can play in centre midfield as well, where he is often utilised. He has scored 6 times in 29 appearances for Argentina and is one of the world's best wingers.

6. Gabriel Sandoval
Age: 25
Position: AM C
Team: Juventus
Country: Argentina

The 25 year old Argentinian is just starting to hit his strides in world football. With some amazing attributes he is really one to watch over the next few years. He was only recently signed by Juventus for $37M but should have much more of an impact there as opposed to Reggina, where he has spent the last three years. He has only played five games for Argentina, but he looks to be a brilliant attacking midfielder and it will be interesting to see how much use Juventus can get out of him.

7. Anthony Annan
Age: 31
Position: DM, MC
Team: Olympique Lyonnais
Country: Ghana

Annan has risen to fame as the best African footballer in the world, and although most of his technical stats aren't the best he is an excellent hard nut defensive midfielder, who has had stints with numerous clubs including Rosenborg, M?laga, Arsenal, Hoffenheim, Liverpool and now Lyon where he has played for the last two years with exceptional results. He has made 64 appearances for Ghana and has become one to be feared in the midfield where his physical play and excellent tackling makes him the best defensive midfielder in the world.

8. Cesc F?bregas
Age: 31
Position: DM, MC
Team: Arsenal
Country: Spain

With an incredible 110 caps for Spain, F?bregas is still one of the world's best having hit his peak at Arsenal. He has been simply sensational for them in the last nine years and is already regarded as a legend of the modern era. He has been shortlisted for World Footballer of the Year on nine occasions, and he is one of the toughest mentally in the world.

9. Sebastian Giovinco
Age: 31
Position: AM LC, FC
Team: Juventus
Country: Italy

Having spent his entire career at Juventus with the exception of one loan year at Empoli in 2007/08, Giovinco has progressed very well and is one of Italy's most recognised players. He performs best on the wing and is a superb dribbler with excellent agility which makes him tough to tackle. His best year came in 2016/17 when he scored 20 goals and provided 13 assists in 46 competitive matches for Juventus, and he has been shortlisted for World Footballer of the Year four times.

10. Sandro
Age: 29
Position: DM, M RC
Team: Genoa
Country: Brazil

Sandro moved to Genoa from Brazilian club Internacional in 2010/11 in a deal worth $35M, and Genoa surely haven't regretted signing him as he has gone on to be one of the best midfielders in the world, particularly on the defensive side. He is perhaps Brazil's best current player with 75 caps and 10 goals and his attributes make him the perfect ball winning midfielder. He is a superb tackler and can mark any player out of the match - not to mention he is also excellent at heading and due to his excellent jump he is a big threat at corners.

11. Cristiano Ronaldo
Age: 33
Position: AM RL
Team: Real Madrid
Country: Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo is still at Real Madrid and is one of the top wingers in the world with his excellent technical stats. He has made a staggering 131 appearances for Portugal with 57 goals and has played in a total of 403 competitive games for Real Madrid. He last won the World Footballer of the Year in 2015 although it seems unlikely that he will win it again.

12. Hugo Lloris
Age: 31
Position: GK
Team: Olympique Lyonnais
Country: France

French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is the second best goalkeeper in the world behind one of the current competitors and still manages to rake in the awards, with seven Ligue 1 Star Goalkeeper awards under his belt at Lyon. He has plenty of years left in him as a goalkeeper and with 94 caps for France he is an international star.

13. Mesut ?zil
Age: 29
Position: AM LC
Team: Werder Bremen
Country: Germany

The Germany copyright over the game has made it impossible for Mesut ?zil to earn international caps, but none the less he is an excellent winger and one of the best players easily from Germany. He has fantastic pace and acceleration and his dribbling, creativity and flair are all amazing. He is a wonderful player to watch as he dazzles opponents up the wing and many a defender have been left awe-struck as Mesut ?zil works his magic.

14. Neymar
Age: 26
Position: AM/FC
Team: FC Bayern
Country: Brazil

There are only two better dribblers of the ball than him in the world right now - with those two players being Lionel Messi, and a Spanish midfielder by the name of Keko currently at Everton. With incredible first touch, blinding pace, amazing agility and excellent acceleration Neymar is simply unstoppable when he runs with the ball. He isn't the best finisher ever but some of his runs are simply amazing, and when FC Bayern signed him for $42M it proved to be one of their best financial deals as Neymar has gone on to become a world star. He already has 28 caps for Brazil and has scored 13 times, and it looks like there might be many more to come.

15. John Obi Mikel
Age: 31
Position: DM, AMC
Team: Chelsea
Country: Nigeria

John Obi Mikel has really matured well over the last eight to nine years and he has become a star of Chelsea, as well as one of Nigeria's best players in history. He is perhaps the strongest and fittest player in the world and performs best playing either as a defensive midfielder or as an attacking midfielder, although he probably favours defense. He has been instrumental for Chelsea over the last few years and they certainly would have struggled without him.

16. Steve Daniel
Age: 19
Position: GK
Team: Sunderland
Country: England

England and Sunderland have surely got an absolute gem here in Steve Daniel. Despite being just 19 years of age, he has already made three appearances for England and was keeping in the first team for Sunderland only months after his 16th birthday. He has incredible reflexes and while he isn't the most agile of keepers, his shot stopping ability is something simply beyond words - and for a 19 year old as well, it makes it even more impressive. Steve Daniel has easily the most potential in the world, but will he be able to fully utilise it at Premier League strugglers Sunderland?

17. Ray Jones
Age: 22
Position: GK
Team: Inter Milan
Country: England

England certainly do not have a shortage of amazing young goalkeepers here, with Ray Jones also another extremely bright prospect. He is currently the first choice keeper of Inter, and after finishing with 17 clean sheets from 28 appearances in the league he has become recognised as one of the best keepers in the world already despite being just 22. He has made 10 appearances for England, and one thing is for sure - England certainly won't be worrying about their goalkeeper for the next fifteen years.

18. Diego Benaglio
Age: 34
Position: GK
Team: Wolfsburg
Country: Switzerland

The experienced Swiss goalkeeper has racked up an exact ton of international appearances and his superb mental and physical stats have made him one of the smartest and best goalkeepers in the world over the past few years. Although Wolfsburg have struggled in the Bundesliga, Benaglio has always been consistently performing reasonably well and he is considered a legend of Switzerland, having been in their national team for many years now. It seems he may not have too much left in him though before he starts to become slower, although he may continue keeping for a few years as Wolfsburg have no goalkeeping prospects after him.

19. Pato
Age: 28
Position: AM R, FC
Team: AC Milan
Country: Brazil

The much-hyped winger and striker has lived up to everything surrounding him and has gone on to become one of the world's best forwards. He has an excellent scoring record at Milan and has been Brazil's first choice striker for years with 60 caps and 32 goals to his name. He is an excellent dribbler and is very quick as well, and has progressed very well over the years with some very good performances for Milan.

20. Levan Kania
Age: 27
Position: AM C
Team: Juventus
Country: Georgia

Levan Kania has been one of the surprising players to burst on to the world scene but the Georgian attacking midfielder has been a dominant force for his country with 74 caps and he is definitely an excellent player. His stats indicate he may be better as a defensive midfielder, but he normally plays the role of an attacking midfielder who also helps out in defense as well. At the age of 27, he should have many more games for Georgia and he had an excellent career at Schalke before only recently moving to Juventus.

FM Elimination

Steve Daniels looks amazing and will probably overtake me in the World XI within a few years. Quality stats for a 19yo, superb. I'm amazed just looking at his technical stats.

Joe Carter > Ollie ;)
