Everyone knows Indie is the greatest form of music in the world; It's an indisputable fact. But whilst listening to the fantastic 'Albion' by Babyshambles it got me thinking how much of a legendary wordsmith Pete Doherty really is. he must surely be remembered as one of the all time great Indie artists despite his recent loss of sanity. Who else deserves to join him and the Libertines in this group of fantastic Indie bands/artists?

Yeah, Noel Gallagher, Tom Meighan, Serge Pizzorno, Carl Barat and Pete Doherty ftw!

Oasis even though I rarely listen to Indie

Well I suppose Oasis killed indie, by making it totally mainstream in 1996 :p Still the greatest british band for 20 years, better than the Stone Roses despite how good they were.

Well its clearly Arcade Fire by a long, long stretch. With the Killers trailing behind them like an old lady taking her bulldog for a walk, or even this appalling attempt at a simile.

All time, the three most influential indie bands are (in my humble opinion) Joy Division, The Smiths & The Stone Roses. Pretty much any English band that has at some time or other been labelled "indie" has been influenced by one or more of them, either directly or indirectly. The Libertines are clearly indebted to The Smiths (as well as The Clash & The Strokes), Kasabian take their lead from the Madchester/baggy sound of the late 80s/early 90s which The Stone Roses were one of the leading lights of, The Editors are basically a karoke Joy Division & Oasis sound like both The Smiths & The Roses.

Of bands still recording my personal favorites are Elbow & Doves who (along with Joy Divsion, The Stone Roses & The Smiths) are all from greater Manchester, which may or may not be coincidental.

Can't whack a bit of Neil Young though, really. ;)
