The Lunch Interval

David Gower: Welcome back to Old Trafford at lunch on day 1 of this first npower test match. It has been an intriguing morning session but who is on top in this match? Well i am joined by Michael Atherton and Sir Ian Botham now in the studio to get their thoughts. Michael what do you make of England's batting this morning?

Michael Atherton: I thought they started poorly with the loss of two quick wickets but then i felt the pair at number three and four showed great character to rebuild the innings without taking any risks. I would have to favour England this afternoon because they have two batsmen in and reading the conditions well. I think that in particular this morning Michael Vaughan will be disappointed because he played a drive on the up which was never there to drive really. I am sure he will learn from his mistake unliek Alistair Cook who i felt was just very unlucky trying to defend and the ball nipped back and deceived him into a little inside edge onto the stumps. Another day it would have gone for four. Overall i think England will be pleased with the position they are in.

David Gower: Ian what would you say about the West Indies performance with the ball this morning?

Sir Ian Botham: Well quite frankly they were not good enough. They were lucky to get two wickets if i am honest. They bowled to short to players who are at their most solid pulling and cooking. The ideakl place they should be bowling was where they did to Michael Vuaghan. Pitch it up and get the batsmen driving and get them to edge them. To many times they dropped it short and they didn't challenge the batsmen.

David Gower: Right lets remind ourselves of the scorecard for England.

Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen are unbeaten on 30 each and the two wickets to fall were those of Michael Vaughan for 13 and Cook for 10. Overall England in a strong position. We will be back after the break with the afternoon session. Will England improve their position or can the Windies get back into it?

David Gower: Welcome back to Old Trafford and the afternoons ession is about to get underway and for this session the two commentators will be Nasser Hussain and with him Sir Ian Botham.

Nasser Hussain Thanks David and the players are just coming out of the pavilion after the lunch interval with England placed on 91/2. They need to make some progress this afternoon and wear the West Indies out Ian.

Sir Ian Botham: Yes i think they know what they have to do and i think this partnership may be the one for England not only in this innings but possibly the match. The umpires are ready so let the session get underway.

Ian Bradshaw and Corey Collymore are the Windies bowlers used by captain Brian Lara and three overs pass and England score eight runs to take the total up to 99/2.

Nasser Hussain: Ok Kevin Pietersen on strike to Collymore. What can he do here? Great shot from KP he hits through the covers and it races to the boundary. He is an unorthodox player but one hell of a good one beefy.

Sir Ian Botham: He sure is and there is another beautiful shot this time a straight drive down the gorund for another boundary. Pietersen has scored 8 off of the first two balls and is nearing his half century. England are 109/2.

Another 2 overs pass and England move on to 117/2. Colleymore is bowling the wrong lines and Bradshaw is bowling too short.

Sir Ian Botham: Right Pietersen on strike on 49. Bradshaw runs in and that will be a single down to fine leg for Kevin Pietersen's half century.

Nasser Hussain: That is a great innings from Kevin Pietersen. Unusual to see so much control from him just four boundaries in his fifty but you sense he may start widening his shoulders as he looks for a century in the first macth of this series.

Two overs pass with England scoring seven runs.

Sir Ian Botham KP on strike yet agin and looking to punish Collymore and he deos with a wonderful cover drive. It will be interesting to see what the Windies do here. They are leaking runs in the offside so i reckon Lara is going to put a sweeper out there.

Nasser Hussain: Correctly predicted Beefy they have indeed. Now there is no mid off. Collymore runs in and that is smacked down the ground for four through the newly vacant area and that also brings up a brilliant 100 partnership between Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen to get England out of trouble.

In the next two overs Pietersen hits two boundaries in the form of a leg glance and a wonderful square cut. He looks in great form. Ian Bell is also nearing fifty.

Nasser Hussain: Marlon Dillon into the attack what can he do? Well not a lot because that is a glorious cover drive from Ian Bell which brings up a wonderuflly crafted half centur and richly deserved. The man i have tipped to star in this series has done well so far but can he go on and get a big one?

17311223512.jpg

2 more overs pass as Pietersen tries to knock Collymore out of the attack by hitting two cover drives in one over for boundaries. Dillon only concedes three including a no ball on his next over. Collymore to bowl the next over.

Sir Ian Botham: Right Pietersen back on strike against Collymore. Collymore will look to bowl better after just conceding two boundaries in his last over. Pietersen hooks he goes big but it isn't big enough. I don't believe it Kevin Pietersen has holed out to Chris Gayle at deep backward square leg and Collymore has his man. Kevin Pietersen goes for an entertaining inings of 81. England are 168/3.

Nasser Hussain Well Kevin Pietersen may have gone but there is still plenty of batting left for the English team and here comes the newly appointed One Day England Captain, Paul Collingwood.

17311223690.jpg

5 Overs pass and both Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood play sensibly to pick up another twenty runs moving the core onto 187/3.

Nasser Hussain Paul Collingwood on strike to Corey Collymore who is carrying on this long spell. Collingwood sees it and hits it through the covers for his first boundary. That was overpitched and Collingwood was only too happy to punish the bowler.

In the final few overs of the session England pick up another 17 runs and Paul Collingwood survives two close lbw appeals. It seems all the luck is with England at the minute.

Sir Ian Botham: Well it is tea on day one here and England are in firm control. They are 209/3 with Ian Bell on 71 not out and Paul Collingwood on 18 not out. The only wicket to fall in the session was Kevin Pietersen who holed out to Chris Gayle for 81. Eralier this morning the two England openers went cheaply.

17311223588.jpg

Nasser Hussain: As for the West Indies bowling well Corey Collymore, Pedro Collins and Ian Bradshaw have the wickets but Collymore and Collins have been far too expensive and have struggled with their lines and lengths all day.

Sir Ian Botham: England firmly on top in the afternoon session and looking good for posting a big score. Join us after the break when we will be announcing a huge new initiative in the world of cricket!

Tea Interval

cricket.gif

David Gower: Welcome back at tea on the first day of this npower test match between England and the West Indies with England firmly on top with the score at 209/3 with Ian Bell 71 not out. England will look to dominate the last session of the day and try and build a massive first innings total. Now we can go live to the outfield where David Lloyd is standing by to announce a very special cricket initiative called the Test League.

17408200869.jpg

David Lloyd: Thank you David now this year the ICC has let skysports be the proud sponsor of the inaugral test cricket league rankings system. Basically this will rank the test playing nations in order of how good they are. A team will be awarded 10 points for a test win, 5 for a draw and 1 for a lose. The totoal points earned will then be divided by the number of tests played and the winner of the league will face the 11 best players in the world according to player rankings. So if Australia win they will have a test series against a world 11 to truly test them. Sky sports will host exclusive coverage of this first ever event and will also be announcing a number of new initiatives together with the ICC throughout the year. Back to you David.

David Gower: Wow what a great initiative that is. This could mean at the end of the year we see a test team with the like sof Rahul Dravid, Kevin Pietersen, Shahid Afridi and Andrew Flinotff all in the same team. Be sure to stay with sky sports throughout the year for coverage of that but for now we will take a break and when we come back we will have the final session of the day.
