I have the task of writing an oral presentation on this subject for my Sports in Lit class and could use different insights and/or views on the subject.

One question I would like to pose is why did the ICC ban South Africa from International Cricket and not Zimbabwe when both acts are clear violation of human rights?

I really see this thread becoming someone like AA or Nixons area so I will make full use of your opinions as well as everyone else.

I think the big difference is that Zimbabwe still let the white players play while in RSA black or coloured players were prohibited to play. Its the only reason i can come up with. Maybe the situation hasn't escalated to the extent of RSA's situation as of yet.

But there have been threats to Zimbabwe players reportedly linked to the Cricket Board and most players still havent been payed for the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies

Cmon I really need some opinions on how a solution can be reached so I can look through and anaylise each option

A solution could be reached if President Mugabe wasn't their leader. I think that government has had a big bearing on the politics in Cricket to try and get blacks into the team. This has lead to the white players being pissed off and great white talent has missed out on the opportunity to represent their country. If the government wasn't so anti-white and actually treated their players right then they could have kept their great team together. I think the only way the situation can be solved is through Mugabe being knocked off his perch, more money being put into facilities, training equipment and into schools especially (I know the schools part because my best mate is a white Zimbabwean who played school Cricket and said they have lots of passion and skill and if they were guided properly they could really do well).

That question is a very tough one. This is a bit of a political discussion, but what is going on in Zimababwe right now is terrible. The inflation and poverty rates are sky-rocketing, and the country's money goes nowhere. Mugabe is a tyrant, and the only way to solve their problems is for him to die. It's really that simple, because he has such a stranglehold on the country that it's unlikely he'll want to leave on his own accord.

I remember last year I was at the beach and I met a Zimbabwean man who had left the country years earlier, and was lamenting how terrible it was there. He said that it was disgraceful and was very upset about it all.

However, the best thing that we can do in both cricket and otherwise, is to shut them out from everything that we possibly can. Letting them play sports is a terrible way to encourage them. Right now they are facing little pressure to change their ways.

One of the main reasons that South Africa abolished their Apartheid regime is because of the pressure they had to do so. They weren't allowed to play sports internationally, and were shut out from all international things like that.

For this to be sucessful I will have to anaylise South Africas situation and make comparisions between them and Zimbabwe.

A deep insight on Mugabe will be requied and thanks to Jordan & Dean I have a start on the extent of the situation.

No doubt the ICC could help but they would need to be banned from every sport to feel any sort of isolation and with Mugabe being such a passionate supporter of cricket and sport in general this thought might actually be enough to change his ways but no doubt a higher power taking action would be the only way to a certain result

I think that one big move from the ICC could open the floodgates, as more sports would realise how easy it is to say no. The Olympics would be a big one too.

Olympics could be a killer but sports such as Tennis and Golf where Zimbabwe have been known to have sucess could also have the same effect. Soccer is seen as the national sport like in most african nations but they are ranked 93 in the world which is something the cant take pride in.

Hurting the nationals sporting pride is what would most likely cause a change and removing them from sports in which they have sucess would hit them the hardest although the olympics would cover these bases generally anyway.

I think FIFA has the most chance of taking action, in the past they havent been afraid of taking a stance on an issue but whether its relevent to them is what depends on their action

No worries.

A couple of years ago I did a future solving problem on "Why is Zimbabwe's cricket situation so bad?". I talked about how they could imporve their cricket by setting up a domestic competition and they should play matches against 'A' sides. I think I got a B on it.

Though this might not help you...

Anything you could send me would be appreciated as I can get different views which is what im trying to achieve now

I think its all down to that burk of a leader they have. All he does is wreck the lives of innocent people, killing and slaughtering them. He's worse than Saddam and Hitler and we went to war with them. Not that i agree with the Iraq war, but somehting has to be done about this fool.

But do we have the stance on the situation to begin a war with them? and because we would be doing it right next to South Africa it would hardly be good for relations
