Too hard to bat against spinners?

Hi all, I'm loving the Ashes Cricket 2009 game on the pc, with all you great people making the patches and stuff. Keep up the good work.
I am a test match lover, however, I'm playing tests between Australia V England, batting with England. I am finding it quite competitive on hard difficulty, but as soon as a spinner comes on to ball, I just can't play them. There are too many edges, and I don't like advancing down the pitch as you get stumped too easy. Can someone please give me some advice on correctly playing against spin bowling i.e. Attacking shots, Defensive shots, back foot, front foot etc. Any help would be much appreciated!

:cheers

You can try to just defend until the next over when they'll bring on a medium or fast bowler. Find a shot with a large "sweet spot" (usually defensive) Since you're playing a test it doesn't matter too much wasting the over without scoring runs. (unlike a 20/20)

If you want to score runs then, depending on the field they set, you can try to squeeze out a few singles by playing a front foot defensive shot (either on or off side) diagonally between their fielders. Those shots usually have a big sweet spot. If you see the bowler chasing the ball then you should have time for a quick single.

Playing attacking shots is risky because your timing needs to be spot on. If you advance down the wicket then be ready to very quickly press the "get back" button if you miss the ball. Especially playing the patched version you need to be quick.

Other than that, well, I'm still trying to figure it out myself. lol!

Thanks so much mate. I took your advice and I'm playing more defensive with the occasional attacked shot mainly with front foot and I notice hitting with the spin helps and timing has a lot to do with success.

1. Hit WITH the spin, it's easier than hitting AGAINST the spin.
2. Awkwardly enough, the time gap between 'PERFECT' timing for a fast bowler and 'PERFECT' timing for a spinner is not one anticipates. Though, it seems that the spinner is bowling lot slower, which I think he does, we still have to press the button reasonably early, a lot earlier than what one's intuition tells him to. :p In simpler words, I would press the button earlier for a spinner than a medium pacer(Collingwood/Hussey) but a wee bit after a FM(Watson) guy. And if I were to choose, it's closer to a FM than a M, the timing I mean.
3. SLOG!

Batting against spinners is anything but hard... I guess you are new to this game thats why you are finding it difficult. Once you adjust to the pace of the game it would be so easy that you can slog them for six even in sleep :p

One rule you should remember: If you gonna hit with the spin then get outside the line. i.e If its a leg spinner then move slightly towards leg stump in the crease. And if you wanna hit against the tun then move in the crease so that you get as much in the line as possible. i.e for a right hand batsman if a leg spinner pitches on leg stump then move towards offstump and hit him on the leg side. This eliminates chances of edge.

i use the sweep religiously against the spinner. I find if judged right it is a good scoring option and i leave anything not hitting the stumps alone.

Advancing for a cover/off drive works as well if the ball is spinning into you if you time it consistently. I try not to play the ball from the crease unless its a sweep or a backfoot shot.

I also don't defend them too much either if you can do that you may hit them for 7/8 runs an over and take them out of the attack.

Anything below 20 runs per over against a spinner is criminal :p
